Chapter 41: Returning Home and Getting Spanked
"You say your birthday isn’t today? Don’t be ridiculous!" After hearing Leon’s doubts, the black goat couldn’t help but roll its eyes. "Come on, either you remembered it wrong, or your parents got it wrong, or the person who registered your birthday in the kingdom made a mistake. Your birthday must be today."
"But..."
"Don’t overthink it. There’s no ‘but.’" The black goat looked utterly certain as it countered:
"Do you really think it’s more likely that you, your parents, or some random registrar messed up the date, or that a true deity’s divine authority malfunctioned and assigned you the wrong zodiac alignment?"
"...” Well, when you put it that way...
After recalling his previous life’s birthday and confirming it didn’t match, and having already ruled out every possibility he could think of, Leon reluctantly accepted the black goat’s explanation. He figured his sister must have gotten his birthday wrong. As for why he himself hadn’t misremembered...
That was simple—he didn’t remember anything.
Three years ago, when he had "arrived," his mind had been a complete blank slate. He didn’t even know his own name until Anna told him. Birthdays? Forget about it.
Hmm... I’ll ask her about it again when I get back.
Though the exact date of his birthday wasn’t a big deal, if he could really harness something like the Star Chart’s Protection to gain a diluted version of "wishing makes it so" on his birthday, it was worth confirming.
With that thought tucked away, Leon pulled out a folded piece of parchment from his pocket and began sketching on it with a charcoal stick.
- Practice shooting skills and earn badges—reached Bronze
- Visit Hanna, the nurse—discovered Happiness Residence
- Buy cigarettes for the black goat and earn Demon Badge—reached Silver; out of money for now
- Investigate the waterworks incident and gather evidence of misconduct—
- Find the black goat’s “seven body parts”—
Hmm... Looking at this list, it seemed he’d almost completed everything he’d set out to do!
Satisfied, Leon marked a check next to the waterworks incident and drew a little heart next to the "body parts" entry to indicate he’d found the location of the goat’s heart. Then, gripping the Witch’s Broom between his legs, he added three more items to the list with his charcoal stick.
- Investigate the golden-haired middle-aged man from the Lion family and look for clues about the goat’s heart—
- Confirm my birthday with Anna and see if I can use the good luck next year—
- Find a bold newspaper with connections and leak the waterworks scandal anonymously—
Hmm... That should do for now.
After staring at the parchment for a moment, Leon thoughtfully circled the word "newspaper" in black ink.
It’s still early today. I’ll visit a few newspapers later, buy some copies, and read their articles to see which ones are daring enough to publish scandals!
...
The theft of documents from Char Waterworks Company wasn’t exactly small news, but in a megacity with a population exceeding ten million, such disturbances barely caused a ripple. The capital continued to hum along smoothly, undisturbed.
As the sun slowly sank toward the western horizon, the city—composed of "factories, smog, and crowds"—gradually quieted down. The roar of machinery faded, and countless weary industrial cogs began spilling out of factories, trudging home under the dim glow of streetlights.
Is brother still not back from work?
Anna returned to Veteran's Alley without waiting for Leon to pick her up, carrying her change of clothes and luggage. As she approached the house, she glanced at the dark window of the guest bedroom and instinctively bit her lip. She then took out her keys, unlocked the door, and stepped inside.
"Sister! Sister’s really back!"
"I knew big brother wouldn’t lie to us!"
Hearing the sound of the door opening, the two younger siblings had initially been a bit scared, but upon seeing Anna, who had been gone for several days, they immediately rushed over, clinging to her legs like koalas, refusing to let go as if afraid she might disappear again.
"Mm, I’m back."
Dragging the two little koalas forward, Anna managed to place her luggage on the table with some effort. Like a mother returning home from work, she affectionately patted the heads of her younger siblings, then bent down to kiss each of them on the cheek, smiling warmly as she asked:
"Have you two been good while I was gone? Did you cause any trouble for big brother?"
At Anna’s question, the atmosphere in the room froze slightly. The two children instinctively exchanged glances, and before Melanie could stop him, William, ever the straightforward one, blurted out:
"We’ve been good, but... um..."
"No, no! We didn’t do anything!" Melanie quickly interjected.
"...”
"Hmm?"
Seeing her sister’s suddenly narrowed eyes, Melanie, who had covered her mouth too late, turned her head guiltily and glared at her dim-witted older brother. Finally, with a sigh of resignation, she confessed:
"It wasn’t really trouble... It’s just that Jack and his friends kept saying... saying that you wouldn’t come back this time. We were so angry that we... sort of... played a trick on them..."
...
After listening to Melanie’s explanation and seeing her pitiful expression, Anna felt a pang of guilt. She reached out to gently stroke her sister’s messy golden hair.
This wasn’t entirely their fault. If anyone was to blame, it was herself.
A few days before her episode, she had already sensed she might not return, so she’d arranged with the neighbors to keep her absence hidden so Leon could continue receiving her pension. Jack was one of the neighborhood kids, and his family was among those she’d spoken to. Likely, the adults had accidentally let something slip, and the children overheard it during playtime, provoking Melanie and William.
William, being calm and quiet, probably just stewed in silence, planning to report it to Anna when she returned. But Melanie, mischievous and a bit vengeful, surely retaliated directly. Knowing her, she probably roped William into it under the guise of "protecting her little sister." Judging by Melanie’s hesitant demeanor, they’d likely caused quite a ruckus.
"You two!" Anna sighed, lightly pinching Melanie’s soft, egg-like cheek. Though she wanted to let them off easy given how frightened they must have been, she hardened her resolve and sternly demanded:
"Don’t try to dodge the issue! Tell me honestly—what did you two troublemakers do these past few days? If it wasn’t too bad, I’ll take you to apologize tomorrow. But if it was worse than last time, then no matter the reason, you’re both getting spanked today!"
At Anna’s words, Melanie trembled slightly, clutching her skirt and avoiding eye contact as she mumbled:
"Well... if you say it wasn’t bad, then it was kind of bad, but if you say it was bad, then... not too bad, mainly... um... uh..."
"Stop stalling! I already knew we were in for it the moment you stuffed horse manure into Jack’s mouth!"
Tugging at his still-resisting sister, William expertly dropped his pants, revealing his bare bottom. Turning his head back, he gave the two shocked sisters a serious suggestion:
"Sister, I’ve calculated it. If you’re spanking me, double the amount from last time will do. As for Melanie... you might as well start with five times that!"
