Chapter 39: A Day of Good Fortune?
Uh…
Hearing the cries from inside, Leon, who was standing guard outside in his slightly-too-small uniform, couldn’t help but blink in surprise.
Just a few hours ago, he had stumbled upon one of the seven black goat’s body parts by sheer luck. A random fib to fish for information had unexpectedly led him straight into the middle of the Waterworks Company director’s meeting. And now, as he was trying to figure out how to sneak in and identify people, chaos erupted in the conference room—a familiar-sounding woman's voice crying out for help.
Was his luck today just too good?
...
“Coming!”
Pushing aside thoughts about his improbable fortune, Leon struggled to pull open the heavy oak door and rushed into the meeting room. The black goat’s excited voice immediately rang out in his mind, almost bursting with glee.
To the right! That golden-haired guy! He’s the one who touched my heart!
Golden-haired... The Lion family had been known for generations to have golden hair. In this room, there is only one person with golden hair. So, the goat part was with the Lion family?
Casually glancing at the golden-haired man, Leon committed his appearance to memory. Lowering his head to hide most of his face under the brim of his cap, he quickly moved toward the woman lying on the floor to his left.
“Quickly!” Unaware that the security guard rushing in was someone familiar, the panicked young girl with the round face grabbed Leon’s arm, tears streaming down her cheeks as she pleaded, “Go get a doctor! Hurry, call someone, lift her up…”
“Don’t move her yet!” After a quick assessment, Leon recognized the symptoms of epilepsy. Initially hesitant to intervene—worried it might expose his identity—he decided to step in when he remembered overhearing that the woman, the wife of Char Department Store, would bear the brunt of the public water incident compensation. To prevent further complications, Leon stopped the girl.
Directing her to lay the woman flat, tilt her head to the side to prevent choking, Leon stood up and glanced around. Spotting a cushion on the nearby sofa, he tore off a piece of fabric, rolled it up, and carefully inserted it between the woman’s teeth.
“That should do it… Gently hold her chin up and loosen any tight clothing to keep her breathing clear.”
“Okay! I’ll do it!” In emergencies, people are often paralyzed not by danger itself but by uncertainty about what to do. Following Leon’s instructions instinctively, the young girl found herself looking to him for guidance, her tear-filled eyes seeking reassurance. “What next? What else should I do?”
“Now we wait a few minutes to see if she recovers on her own.”
After instructing another temporary guard to fetch a cart just in case, Leon crouched down and spoke softly, “I’ve seen this before. As long as she doesn’t choke or bite her tongue, she’ll usually recover within a few minutes. If her condition doesn’t improve, keep her in this position and take her to a doctor. She shouldn’t be in any immediate danger.”
“Thank you! Thank you so much!” Relieved to hear there was no immediate threat to life, the young girl’s tension eased. Feeling her legs go weak, she collapsed onto the carpet like a little duck, still holding her mother’s jaw while tears continued to flow as she thanked Leon repeatedly.
Though it seemed complicated, all of this unfolded in less than a minute. Seeing the woman’s condition stabilize, the others in the room—who had been stunned by the sudden commotion—finally exhaled in relief.
Swallowing up Char Department Store’s assets was purely a business matter. While there were questionable practices involved, their combined forces were confident they could suppress any backlash. But if Mrs. Char had suffered a fatal episode here, the nature of the situation would have drastically changed.
Times had changed. Nobility alone no longer guaranteed immunity from consequences. If things escalated and united the Commercial Federation against them, their three families could face a coordinated boycott. The Federation held significant political power through its parliamentary seats, and if provoked, they could rally together. With Old Char, the vice president of the Federation, pulling strings, their families would find themselves in deep trouble.
“Well done!” Seeing the potential crisis averted, the directors visibly relaxed. The facilitator of the Waterworks Company meeting sighed in relief and beamed at Leon.
“Your salary is doubled this month! Go tell your department… uh…” Looking at this peculiar employee wearing a security uniform but carrying a large broom, the facilitator frowned in confusion. “Which department are you from? Security or cleaning?”
“Security. I’m from the security department.” Leon flashed the same simple, earnest smile he’d learned from the old coffee stall owner, lowering his head modestly.
“There’s been trouble outside lately, so my manager stationed me at the door to prevent any suspicious individuals from disturbing our guests. We were also told to assist in case of emergencies. Looks like it paid off.”
“Excellent!” Satisfied, the facilitator waved him away.
“Go see Manager Andrew. Tell him your salary is doubled this month, and your base pay will increase by 30% going forward. You’re dismissed.”
“Got it!”
Though Leon despised everyone in the room, he had gathered valuable intel, confirmed the location of one of the goat parts, and was about to secure evidence of the Waterworks Company’s illegal operations. It was a fruitful trip, and Leon knew better than to overstay his welcome. Tipping his cap, he turned to leave with his broom in hand.
But then, something strange happened.
As Leon turned to leave, the black goat’s head in his shopping bag shifted with the motion. Its sharp horn sliced through the bag again, tumbling out and landing squarely on the carpet, staring directly at the directors.
(⊙_⊙)?
(⊙_⊙)?
(⊙_⊙)?
Wait… hadn’t he seen this scene before?
“This… um, sorry. My wife loves goat head soup. I bought this at the morning market and planned to bring it home after work,” Leon said smoothly, delivering the same terrible lie as last time. Bending down to retrieve the goat head, he prepared to make a quick exit while the directors were still processing the absurdity.
But fate wasn’t done with him yet.
His uniform jacket was a bit short, and the pocket placement unusually high. As Leon bent over, the ID card tucked in his chest pocket slipped out, bouncing twice on the carpet before sliding right in front of the directors. The unique emblem of the Police Department gleamed brightly under the light.
(キ`゚Д゚´)!!
(キ`゚Д゚´)!!
(キ`゚Д゚´)!!
And as if that weren’t bad enough, just at this critical moment, a dull thud echoed from the doorway.
There stood the wide-open meeting room door, the unconscious guest foaming at the mouth on the floor, and Leon bending over to pick up his Police Department ID. The security manager, returning from the archives, took one look at the scene and instantly crumbled. Dropping his files, he pointed at Leon, pale-faced, and screamed: “It wasn’t me! He forced me to do it! I don’t know anything!!!”
