Chapter 71: Believe Me, Just Believe Me!

The distance from Karatu to Dodoma was 305 kilometers. On a well-paved highway back home, even with bathroom breaks and rest stops, three hours would have been plenty. But here in Tanzania, the road conditions were a different story. This was especially true in the western inland regions, where the roads remained rudimentary, typical of remote mountainous areas. After heavy rains, flooding often washed them away entirely.

Fortunately, the entire journey followed the southern route along Highway 104. Once past Makuyuni, most of the remaining stretch consisted of straight, flat plains. For an off-road vehicle like theirs, it hardly mattered whether there was a proper road or not.

As they approached the exit for Highway 144, two uniformed Black police officers emerged from a white house by the roadside to the left front of the SUV. They waved stop signs in their hands. Gu Lang already knew that inspections were mandatory here, so he wasn’t surprised as he pulled over.

Rolling down the window, Gu Lang saw one of the officers approach—a man with a rifle slung over his shoulder and a wide-brimmed hat atop his head.

“Oh? It’s you!” Gu Lang’s face lit up with a mix of surprise and delight.

The officer wasn’t just anyone—it was Kumi, the policeman he’d briefly met at the military camp in Karatu.

“Hehe, so this is where you’re stationed? What a coincidence!” Gu Lang chuckled, trying to strike up a friendly rapport.

Kumi stared into the car with an impassive expression. When his gaze swept over Wang Ping, he raised an eyebrow in mild surprise.

“You were speeding!”

“Uh…” Gu Lang’s smile froze on his face.

Speeding? He hadn’t gone over 60 miles per hour the entire trip. Was this guy messing with him?

Seeing no reaction from Gu Lang, Kumi impatiently tapped on the car door, pointing at Wang Ping. “That’ll be 150,000 shillings in fines! And transporting that… thing counts as carrying special live cargo. You need to pay taxes for it!”

Gu Lang: …

Wang Ping: … Who the hell are you calling a “thing”?

A flood of silent reactions filled the livestream screen, conveying an unspoken sense of disbelief. Everyone had assumed Gu Lang had run into an acquaintance, but the slap in the face came so fast it felt like a tornado. Also, were African police really like this?

With a gloomy expression, Gu Lang fished out a few soft bills from his wallet and handed them over. He didn’t even get a receipt before Kumi impatiently waved him off.

Still fuming, Gu Lang drove another few hundred meters, then turned at the intersection of Highways 104 and 144. At a gas station northwest of the intersection, he filled the tank halfway and crossed the road to buy two rolls of bandages from a pharmacy. The bandages weren’t for Wang Ping—they were for himself.

Wang Ping had a steady hand. Every spot he chose to hit on Gu Lang was carefully selected—none caused serious injury or left lasting marks, but they were guaranteed to hurt like hell. As a result, Gu Lang had been wincing and grimacing the whole way. Now that they’d reached a place with a pharmacy, he finally decided to patch himself up.

Sure, they were just scrapes and shallow marks, and bandaging them might seem like overkill. But as long as he didn’t cry, he was still a real man. Besides, wrapping himself up was all in the name of better travel, right?

By now, Wang Ping had calmed down. Perhaps venting his frustration had helped, because he didn’t seem to care about Gu Lang being slapped with that malicious fine. In fact, he was happily munching on dried fish snacks, lounging in the passenger seat, and watching the hilarious barrage of comments in the live stream.

He especially liked the comments from a user named “I’m Not a Pomelo.” This person always asked the most pointed questions.

For instance: “Did Third Brother Gu get beaten up?” “Is Third Brother Gu crying?” “Is Third Brother Gu scared of pain?”

If only his furry paws weren’t so clumsy, Wang Ping would’ve promoted this guy to moderator just for fun.

Every time Gu Lang’s face darkened at these comments, Wang Ping felt a wave of satisfaction. This was his own twisted way of unwinding.

Luke and Jacob often reminded their team members that this line of work came with immense psychological pressure. After every mission, regardless of the outcome, everyone needed a way to release their emotions.

As a result, each member of Team Three had developed quirky hobbies.

Luke liked going to shooting ranges. Jacob enjoyed deep-sea diving. Anna loved horseback riding at her friend’s ranch.

But Wang Ping and Iru, the African teammate, were self-proclaimed homebodies. They spent their free time watching movies and playing video games.

Video games were out of the question now, but watching movies was still an option, right?

After swallowing the last bite of dried fish, Wang Ping wiped his slightly greasy paws and hopped onto Gu Lang’s driver’s seat. He wanted to try switching the tablet to a different channel.

To avoid damaging the screen, Wang Ping awkwardly spread his inflexible paws and tried to use the pads of his palms to operate the device.

At this moment, he envied feline animals. Their claws retracted when not in use, leaving soft paw pads behind.

After several attempts, Wang Ping realized something was off. Maybe it was because honey badgers’ paws were structured differently, but even though he was sure his palm was pressing against the tablet, nothing happened.

Was his paw pad not considered flesh? But aside from his claws, what part of him wasn’t covered in fur?

Looking at his reflection in the tablet’s glossy screen, Wang Ping’s gaze slowly moved from his nose, which now sported two band-aids, downward.

Opening his mouth, he examined his pink little tongue and suddenly had a bold idea.

Stretching out his tongue, he tentatively tapped the tablet’s screen. He must’ve hit some kind of ad, because the screen changed. A sweet-looking girl appeared, introducing a local delicacy from the mountains. The live stream chat exploded with comments, leaving Gu Lang’s pathetic stream far behind.

It worked!

Seeing the tablet finally respond, Wang Ping was thrilled. He stretched out his tongue again and carefully inched closer to the screen.

“Click…”

The sound of the car’s door opening interrupted him. Gu Lang, having finished his errands, opened the door to get back in.

Spotting Wang Ping on the driver’s seat, Gu Lang froze mid-motion, his gaze instinctively shifting to the opposite side of the car.

The scene inside the vehicle was bizarre.

What had been Gu Lang’s live stream had somehow switched to a beautiful woman. Meanwhile, a certain honey badger stood on the driver’s seat, balancing on his hind legs and stretching his tongue toward the screen.

“Uh… Did I come at a bad time?”

If he weren’t afraid of provoking Wang Ping into scratching him bloody again, Gu Lang would’ve rolled around laughing.

This kind of scene hadn’t happened since college, when he’d parted ways with his roommates. Never in his wildest dreams did he expect such a “surprise” from Wang Ping.

Wang Ping was still processing. Seeing Gu Lang return, he instinctively retracted his tongue, jumped back to the passenger seat, and pretended nothing had happened.

Using his tongue to operate the tablet in front of Third Brother Gu was both too embarrassing and too surreal. He feared scaring the man.

But Gu Lang clearly wasn’t frightened.

Suppressing laughter, he got back into the car and closed the door. With a critical eye, he sized up the female streamer on the screen, then turned to Wang Ping. “So you’re into this type, huh?”

What type?

Wang Ping shot him a puzzled look, then glanced at the tablet. Recalling his earlier actions, his face tightened in horror.

Holy crap, what the hell did I just do?!

Quickly raising his head, Wang Ping tried his best to look sincere and shook his head vigorously at Gu Lang.

It’s not what you think, damn it!

“Not interested?”

Gu Lang observed Wang Ping thoughtfully. Normally indifferent to whatever Gu Lang said, the honey badger was now shaking his head with unusual seriousness. Glancing at the female streamer’s username on the screen—Hu Li—he mused aloud, “What a strange name. Sounds like ‘fox (Pronounced as Hu Li in chinese).’”

In fact, viewers in the live stream chat had been affectionately calling her “Little Fox.” The streamer herself cheerfully embraced the nickname.

She had a round face, dimples when she smiled, fair skin, large eyes, and an almost anime-like charm.

“Could it be because of the resemblance?” Gu Lang stole a glance at Wang Ping, who was now visibly sulking, and burst into laughter.

Damn it! I denied it, and you’re still laughing your ass off?!

Leaping forward, Wang Ping pointed a claw at the female streamer on the screen and rapidly shook his little head.

I don’t like her, seriously! Believe me, just believe me!

“Hahaha…” Gu Lang couldn’t hold back any longer and collapsed into laughter on his seat.

Wang Ping glared at Gu Lang, who was laughing harder by the second. Grabbing a piece of dried fish nearby, he slapped it onto Gu Lang’s face.

Laugh! Laugh until you die, you bastard!
