Chapter 70: Ah… My Tail…
The story in the live stream had reached the part where a certain leopard, due to differing attitudes toward humans, parted ways with a certain honey badger, leaving their once inseparable partnership shattered. Gu Lang talked until his throat was dry, spittle flying onto the tablet screen. The viewers were caught between lamenting the loss of such a majestic feline and showering the stream with gifts.
As for Rosette’s whereabouts, Gu Lang was completely clueless. Wang Ping couldn’t talk, and even if the honey badger could, there was no guarantee he’d share anything.
Unlike Wang Ping, who remained silent, Gu Lang sighed outwardly but was inwardly delighted. Without Rosette around, he felt much more at ease—after all, he no longer had to worry about a single swipe from that feline sending him to the hospital with a broken bone.
The live stream chat was now a dazzling spectacle of special effects. Before the rocket animations from earlier had even faded, new airplane effects were already lighting up the screen. Even during his jungle adventures, Gu Lang had never witnessed such an extravagant display. Every so often, even more impressive gifts like yachts and super rockets would appear, adding to the grandeur.
"Haha! Everyone's so kind! Thank you all for your support, I..."
Just as Gu Lang was laughing so hard he thought his uvula might burst out, his peripheral vision caught Wang Ping's ominous glare. His slightly unhinged laughter abruptly cut off, like a rooster mid-crow suddenly having its neck squeezed.
Gu Lang suddenly recalled that Wang Ping had an excellent memory—especially when it came to holding grudges. He’d already been beaten several times for saying the wrong thing. And this time? This time, he’d outright sold the honey badger out. Who knew how much Wang Ping remembered—or how much he’d pay for it later.
“Ahem… Earlier, when Boss fought that wild honey badger, he got a bit injured. Let me pull over and tend to his wounds. Afterward, I’ll have him say hi to everyone, okay?”
As Gu Lang spoke, he gradually slowed the car, pulling it to the side of the road.
“Boss is hurt?”
“What happened?”
“Quick, go bandage him up!”
“Damn, you were bragging so hard earlier! Have some sense!”
“Worst streamer ever!”
“Go treat Boss’s wounds! What kind of lackey are you?”
“Get your act together!”
The barrage of comments flooded the screen, unanimously condemning the unreliable streamer. Ignoring the same people who had praised him moments ago, Gu Lang pulled the handbrake, turned around, and rummaged through his backpack for the first aid kit.
The bandages were long gone—used up on Rosette, Wang Ping's response to nature’s call, and Gu Lang’s own injuries back in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The first aid kit wasn’t large to begin with, but there was still plenty of antiseptic powder left. After some thought, Gu Lang also grabbed a pack of tissues he bought from Karatu, planning to use them as makeshift bandages.
Using a cotton swab dipped in iodine, he carefully applied it to Wang Ping’s nose. When white foam began to form around the wound, he gently wiped it away before sprinkling powdered medicine onto the area.
It was undeniable—this was the worst injury Wang Ping had suffered since his rebirth. The bite marks on his nose were clear as day, and the stinging sensation brought tears streaming down his face faster than he could wipe them away.
“Uh… I’ll be gentler, I promise…”
Startled by Wang Ping’s sudden waterfall of tears, Gu Lang instinctively offered words of comfort and even handed over a tissue. But Wang Ping swatted his hand away with a sharp claw.
Firmly rejecting Gu Lang’s attempt to secure a tissue to his nose with medical tape, Wang Ping pointed at the band-aids in the first aid kit instead. Reluctantly, Gu Lang applied two band-aids in a cross shape over Wang Ping’s snout, creating a hilariously absurd look.
But before Wang Ping could catch his breath, he saw Gu Lang reaching toward his rear end with another cotton swab.
“Holy crap! What the hell are you doing?! I’m not into that!”
Another swipe sent the cotton swab flying, and Wang Ping scrambled backward, flailing his limbs to keep Gu Lang at bay.
“I’m not done with your tail yet!” Gu Lang exclaimed hurriedly.
Tail? What about the tail?
Sitting upright, Wang Ping pulled his tail forward and inspected it. To his horror, a patch of fur was missing near the tip, revealing smooth, hairless skin—it looked like a stubby thumb without a nail.
Bald… bald?! Oh no.
“Ah… my tail…”
A mental scream echoed in Wang Ping’s mind as he cradled his damaged appendage, recalling the chaotic scene at that “farm stay” in Karatu earlier that morning. If memory served, the fur had been bitten off by the starving hyena while he hung helplessly on the wall.
At that realization, Wang Ping’s anger boiled over. His paw trembled as he clutched his tail, glaring daggers at Gu Lang.
This is all your fault!
“Grrr~!”
Whether it was a growl or something else, Wang Ping couldn’t say. All he knew was that he needed to release the pent-up frustration in his chest. With a swift leap, he lunged at Gu Lang, claws slashing wildly.
“Ah! What the hell?!”
“Ow!!”
“Stop! Please stop!”
“Augh!”
“Ouch! That hurts! Stop it!”
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry, okay?!”
The cramped space of the off-road vehicle made escape impossible, especially with Gu Lang strapped in by his seatbelt. He flailed his arms desperately, trying to block Wang Ping’s attacks. But no matter what he did, the honey badger always found an awkward angle to land a hit. Eventually, Gu Lang gave up and covered his face, twisting left and right as Wang Ping continued his assault.
On the highway, two military vehicles passed by, their occupants exchanging amused glances at the violently shaking off-road vehicle parked on the side of the road. A chorus of “Whoa!”s filled the air.
After about ten minutes, Wang Ping finally tired himself out. Realizing he was aggravating the wound on his nose, he retreated to the backseat, sulking as he cradled his tail.
This outburst had been pure catharsis, meaningless beyond venting his frustration. He couldn’t bring himself to truly harm Gu Lang and had to consciously restrain his claws from inflicting serious damage. Wang Ping realized that arguing with this idiot was both mentally and physically exhausting—and ultimately, it only left him more miserable.
Phew…
Seeing Wang Ping finally calm down, Gu Lang let out a sigh of relief, wiping away the sweat that had accumulated on his forehead—whether from fear or exertion, he wasn’t sure. He wisely decided against mentioning Wang Ping making an appearance in the live stream again. One wrong word, and he’d risk getting beaten in front of thousands of viewers—a humiliation he couldn’t bear.
Gu Lang’s face and forehead were now marked with red scratches, and his hands bore a few shallow cuts. Thankfully, Wang Ping had exercised restraint, ensuring none of the wounds were serious.
Reaching into his backpack, Gu Lang pulled out a pack of dried fish snacks. With a fawning smile, he extended them toward Wang Ping, his demeanor oozing obsequiousness.
Compared to the two beatings Wang Ping had endured earlier, Gu Lang’s punishment felt entirely justified—even if Wang Ping couldn’t speak, the message was clear: this was retribution for selling him out last night.
What Gu Lang didn’t realize, however, was that his quick thinking in returning to rescue Wang Ping—no, redeem the honey badger—had softened the blow. Though things hadn’t gone perfectly, his actions had tempered Wang Ping’s anger, preventing it from turning into outright hatred. Given Wang Ping’s personality, betrayal of that magnitude wouldn’t have ended with just a beating; it might’ve resulted in far worse consequences for Gu Lang.
With a dismissive swipe, Wang Ping knocked the pack of dried fish aside, lowering his head once more to sulk over his tail.
Sigh… I wonder if the fur will grow back. Will I end up as a bald-tailed honey badger for the rest of my life?
