Chapter 67: The Embarrassing Racial Talent

At this moment, Wang Ping’s two little paws were gripping the top of the wall with all their might. His tiny teeth clamped down on the wire in his mouth, refusing to let go for fear that even a slight loosening would send him tumbling down.

The hyena standing beneath Wang Ping’s rear was practically losing its mind. It seemed the poor creature hadn’t eaten properly since arriving here, and now, seeing an opportunity for a snack, it was using every ounce of strength to leap toward the wall. Strings of drool hung from its exposed canine teeth as low growls rumbled in its throat.

A young keeper outside the neighboring gate had heard the commotion and considered coming over to check. However, after some haggling, Gu Lang finally agreed to pay twenty percent more to buy back the honey badger at this moment.

Probably fearing that Gu Lang would change his mind again, the voice unfamiliar to Wang Ping hurriedly instructed the young keeper to fetch tools and cage the honey badger in the adjacent room so Gu Lang could take it away.

"Gu Lang, you’re courting disaster…" muttered Wang Ping anxiously.

He did want someone to teach Gu Lang a lesson—preferably by making him cry—but imagining Gu Lang being left alone with the other honey badger made Wang Ping cringe. That scenario would be too brutal to bear.

Before Gu Lang turned into a “eunuch,” Wang Pin needed to act fast to salvage the situation somehow.

Two small bumps appeared under Wang Ping's shoulders as he strained his arms, trying desperately to hoist himself onto the wall. Perhaps holding his breath for too long, or maybe concentrating all his strength into his claws, Wang Ping suddenly felt something unstable happening below his tail. A certain sensation was imminent.

"Oh no... hold on..." Wang Ping thought frantically.

His face turned green with embarrassment; he'd never felt so humiliated in his life.

Quickly tucking his tail between his short legs and instinctively clenching tight, Wang Ping lost focus for a split second. His grip on the wall faltered, causing his body to slip downwards.

Startled, Wang Ping quickly pushed forward and tightened his grip, ignoring whatever was about to emerge.

Seeing the honey badger slip, the hyena below became ecstatic. Its front paws scrambled against the wall as it raised its head high, leaping upward with its hind legs, jaws wide open aiming straight for Wang Ping's underside. Long canine teeth glistened with saliva.

Just then, a faint sound emanated from beneath Wang Ping.

"Gurgle gurgle gurgle~~~"

The digestive system hidden beneath the honey badger's fluffy belly finally let out a satisfied sigh, as if shedding a heavy burden. Overcome with embarrassment, Wang Ping’s vision blurred with tears. When the hyena below approached, a burst of gas—accompanied by what seemed to be a few drops of liquid—shot directly into the open jaws of the hyena with unerring precision.

"..."

The scene froze momentarily, or perhaps awkward moments always feel excruciatingly long.

"Kach..."

Wrinkling his nose fiercely despite tears streaming down his face, Wang Ping gritted his teeth and once again mustered the strength to pull himself up. The hyena, having missed its bite, fell back down, momentarily stunned.

Then, a dry heave echoed from deep within the hyena's throat.

"Gurgle... retch..."

Already skeletal, the hyena's neck visibly twitched. Then another spasm followed, spreading throughout its entire body.

Mustelids naturally used their flatulence as weapons. Take ferrets, for example. This talent was even glorified by a distant relative known as the skunk.

Though logically sound, Wang Ping disliked using such racial talents in combat. Not only was it self-damaging, but it also bruised his human soul’s dignity.

In contrast, the "senior" next door handled it much better. He wielded his stench skillfully, varying tactics, and boldly shoving ripe farts right into Wang Ping’s furry face.

With mixed feelings of shame and indignation, Wang Ping watched out of the corner of his eye as the hyena convulsed, whimpering and vomiting while running. Finally collapsing in a heap at the far wall, foaming at the mouth and rolling over unconscious.

Wang Ping: ...

Was it really that bad? Your acting skills are way over the top, buddy!

Without the hyena’s interference, Wang Ping wasn’t sure whether to feel relieved or frustrated. Thank goodness no one saw that; otherwise, it would have been a solid black mark in his history!

Meanwhile, the neighboring keeper returned with a clamp stick topped with a ring, dragging the "senior" into a small iron cage by the neck.

Amidst Gu Lang’s loud exclamations and another voice’s constant reassurance, Wang Ping seized the distraction. With renewed vigor, he hoisted a hind paw onto the wall, flipped over, and scampered along the cement wall before jumping out at the back boundary.

Out of the corner of his eye, he glimpsed Gu Lang happily reaching out to receive the cage.

"Heh... Hope you’ll still be smiling later!"

Behind the cement wall, a short distance separated it from the outer courtyard wall. Between them lay an artificial drainage ditch covered with gridded cement slabs, surrounded by weeds and moss. Flies buzzed around, and the stench of sewage wafted up.

Wiping away tears with a paw, Wang Ping ran along the drainage ditch. Near the guesthouse building, a volleyball-sized square hole allowed the ditch to lead directly to the roadside outside.

Peeking out, the street appeared relatively quiet with few pedestrians. Outside the gate not far away, a battered pickup truck was parked.

Slipping through the hole, Wang Ping sneaked unnoticed along the wall until he reached the truck. Scaling the wheels, he climbed into the cargo bed.

Through the rear window of the truck bed, he spotted Gu Lang’s backpack tossed onto the passenger seat.

Footsteps emerged from the guesthouse entrance. Quickly ducking down, Wang Ping pressed himself against the cargo bed’s side panel.

Gu Lang's cheerful voice bid farewell to the keeper. Picking up the retrieved cage, he opened the passenger door to get in.

That unfamiliar voice spoke again, seemingly advising Gu Lang to place the cage in the cargo bed. But Gu Lang adamantly refused, insisting on keeping it beside him. He declared that after retrieving this honey badger, he wouldn’t let it out of his sight ever again.

"Should I be touched?"

Hidden in the back, Wang Ping grimaced, wiping away another tear.

"Hmph! Touched my foot!"

The vehicle started moving. Wang Ping cautiously peeked out, noticing they weren’t heading back to the hotel.

Gu Lang had received a call from the hotel front desk that morning. The auto repair shop informed him that the off-road vehicle was fixed and ready for pickup.

Vaguely remembering last night after returning to the hotel, Gu Lang recalled turning on his charged phone and receiving several calls.

What was discussed remained unclear, but the call log showed numerous entries. Calls from Grandma, parents, and several unknown numbers—all forgotten.

With the car repaired and Wang Ping retrieved, Gu Lang decided to leave Karatu altogether. First, he’d head to Dar es Salaam to find Zhang Jianming and settle matters in Africa once and for all.

Given the recent misunderstanding, Gu Lang’s intention to send Wang Ping to the zoo had waned.

Checking his phone that morning, he found that honey badgers weren’t considered rare protected animals. Especially in Tanzania, they were more like pests to farmers and beekeepers. Sending one to the zoo might not even be taken seriously.

After much deliberation, Gu Lang thought perhaps keeping Wang Ping at home wasn’t a bad idea. If any acclimatization issues arose, his financial means could afford building a greenhouse.

But first, he needed to consult Zhang Jianming about necessary procedures.

The vehicle arrived at the auto repair shop. Gu Lang got out with the cage, bidding farewell to the man inside the car.

This was the broker from last night, whom he had located with the help of the off-duty bartender earlier in the morning. The man also got out of the car, warmly embraced Gu Lang, and told him to be sure to look him up next time he came to Karatu—guaranteeing he’d be cheaper than any local guide, and so on.

Gu Lang nodded profusely, inwardly rolling his eyes.

Once the car stopped, Wang Ping slipped out the back. While the two conversed, he sneaked into the repair shop through the main gate.

The previously calm honey badger in the cage perked up upon seeing Wang Ping dart past. Standing abruptly, its eyes brimmed with "battle intent."

"You little punk, how dare you abandon Big Brother and run off on your own? Grown some wings, have you?"
