Chapter 66: Wang Ping’s Tears

By the time the sun lazily drifted to its zenith, Wang Ping was still huddled in a corner, quietly sobbing.

It wasn’t that he was overly fragile—men don’t cry easily, after all—but anyone would shed tears if they’d first been blinded by toxic fumes and then bitten on the nose hard enough to leave a gash. Every time Wang Ping breathed, the wound on his nose tugged painfully, sending an uncontrollable stream of tears cascading down his face. No matter how hard he tried to hold them back, they kept coming.

From the outside, it looked like Wang Ping was crying his heart out. But unlike the sniffling honey badger in the corner, his “senior” roommate had long since finished eating and gotten plenty of “post-meal exercise.” Now, the older honey badger lay sprawled across the cool concrete floor, fast asleep.

Judging by the numerous claw marks etched into the cement walls—some fresh, others faded—it seemed this senior had been locked up for quite some time. The place didn’t seem like a professional zoo; Wang Ping could tell just from the shabby appearance of the keeper who’d fed them earlier. The senior’s fur was matted and dirty, likely unwashed for days. However, when it came to preventing escapes, this place was clearly top-notch. Not even this seasoned escape artist had managed to break free.

The lack of human activity outside suggested the staff weren’t worried about their captives fleeing. After all, with nothing but empty cement cells, what could two honey badgers possibly do?

Waking up at night wasn’t part of Wang Ping’s plan anymore. Whether he escaped now or later, the sooner he left, the better. If he hurried, he might be able to track Gu Lang using the lingering scent trail. Worst case, he could find the hotel or mechanic shop to wait for him. If he delayed too long, Gu Lang might leave Karatu altogether—and then how would Wang Ping settle the score?

Even if he couldn’t speak, Wang Ping wanted answers. Had this guy forgotten who saved his life when he was burning with fever? Who gave him water and food, shielding him from bullets? Did his conscience get eaten by hyenas?

Ignoring the stinging pain in his nose, Wang Ping wiped his tears with the fur on the back of his paw. Sniffling softly, he circled the cell, inspecting every inch before finally focusing on the iron-barred gate.

The gate stretched as high as the walls, with vertical steel bars spaced five centimeters apart and welded at one-centimeter thickness. To prevent any clever inmates from climbing over, there were no horizontal crossbars between the vertical ones.

Wang Ping tested the bars with his claws but found he couldn’t grip them properly. However, while this setup might stump an ordinary honey badger, for Wang Ping, it was practically a ready-made ladder.

After measuring the width, Wang Ping spread his arms wide, gripping two bars seven spaces apart with his front paws. Using the same technique, he positioned his hind legs below, anchoring them against the lower rungs of the gate. With his rear legs supporting his weight and his body leaning forward to avoid tipping backward, he began inching upward.

Step by step, front paws moving first, followed by the hind legs, Wang Ping ascended steadily. In less than ten minutes, he reached the top of the 1.5-meter-high gate.

The commotion must have woken the sleeping senior, whose eyes snapped open upon seeing Wang Ping perched atop the wire mesh near the wall. Staring unblinkingly, the senior remained frozen in place.

“Stare all you want! Screw you—I’m leaving, and you can rot in here!” Wang Ping growled through gritted teeth, shooting a venomous glare downward before wiping away another tear. Carefully avoiding the sharp barbed wire at the top, he crept along the edge of the wall.

From his vantage point, Wang Ping could see the area resembled a rustic agritourism site. The backyard was filled with similar cement enclosures, some housing small animals, others empty. A paved pathway led to what appeared to be a combined lodging and dining facility.

Such African-style “farm stays” were common in Karatu, though Wang Ping had never experienced one so intimately.

“What’s the deal with a hotel keeping so many animals? Do people really come out during meals to look at them?” Wang Ping muttered under his breath as he shuffled along the wall.

Wait…

Food? Hmm… That thought sent alarm bells ringing in his mind. Panic rising, Wang Ping quickened his pace. After surveying the layout, he turned a corner and planned to scale the outer wall.

In the adjacent enclosure, a gaunt spotted hyena watched Wang Ping pass overhead. Its eyes widened, and it leapt toward the wall, barking wildly.

“For fuck’s sake, shut up!” Wang Ping hissed, startled. He gestured frantically at the excited hyena below, trying to shush it.

But the hyena only barked louder.

At that moment, voices grew louder from the end of the walkway. Among them, Wang Ping recognized a familiar tone—the young man who’d fed them earlier was leading a group this way.

“Damn you, you traitorous mutt!”

Ignoring the frenzied hyena below, Wang Ping hastened his steps. Unfortunately, the barbed wire atop the narrow wall posed a challenge. Barely 20 centimeters wide, half of it was occupied by the protruding spikes, which branched out menacingly on both sides. As Wang Ping sped up, he had to dodge the sharp edges. Losing his footing momentarily, he slipped and tumbled sideways toward the wall.

“No! (ŎдŎ|||)”

Reacting instinctively, Wang Ping grabbed onto the barbed wire with his front paws, ignoring the sharp pricks. One of the wires bent slightly under his grip, threatening to slip. Just as he was about to lose his hold, Wang Ping clamped his jaws onto the tip of a wire, barely managing to hang on.

The voices drew closer. Footsteps paused at the entrance of the neighboring enclosure.

“Sir, is this the one you’re looking for?” a stiff voice asked in English.

“Hmm… It looks kind of… not quite right…” Gu Lang’s hesitant reply echoed nearby.

Wang Ping froze, his jaw slackening slightly. His body slid downward again.

Below, the hyena continued barking, jumping up and down beneath him. Suddenly, Wang Ping felt a sharp pain in his tail. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the hyena’s mouth clamped around a tuft of fur.

“Son of a—”

Scrambling desperately, Wang Ping dug his sharp claws into the wall, finding purchase. Gripping the edge of the concrete with his front paws, he forced himself upward despite the strain. The effort reopened the wound on his nose, causing fresh blood to trickle down. The acrid smell made his eyes water once more.

Meanwhile, heated discussion erupted next door.

Apparently, someone was assuring Gu Lang that the honey badger he sold had indeed been brought here last night. They claimed to have personally witnessed the drunken animal being tossed into the enclosure.

“You despicable bastard, Gu Lang! You actually sold me off!” Wang Ping seethed silently, holding his breath and cursing Gu Lang’s ancestors in his mind.

Among the group, only the morning keeper seemed aware that one of the badgers was missing. Yet, for reasons unknown, he remained silent, glancing around anxiously instead.

Though the honey badger inside matched the description—size, appearance, everything—Gu Lang hesitated. Knowing Wang Ping’s obsession with cleanliness, he doubted this filthy creature could be him. Still, the confidence of the person accompanying him gave him pause. After all, this was unmistakably a honey badger.

Caught in indecision, Gu Lang finally spotted a puddle of vomit in the corner of the enclosure. Animals could be faked, but drunkenness? Surely not.

“Alright, I guess this is him. I’ll take him, and I’ll return the money.”

“Sir, if you wish to buy him back, the price won’t be the same as last night,” a sly voice interjected.

“Heh…”

Wang Ping sneered inwardly, tears streaming down his furry cheeks.

“Gu Lang, you’ve got guts buying that brute. You have no idea how vicious he is, do you?”
