Chapter 53: The Toad and the Goat
"Kid, you're really done for this time…"
The black goat sighed deeply as it gazed at the enormous soul in the center of the plaza. Turning to Leon with an expression of genuine regret, it said:
"That damn toad is a sacred spirit worshipped by a secretive cult called the Scale of Gold. Its master is a true god, one whose power rivals that of the Master of the Stars. This toad is one of the three pets favored most by that true god."
“Though the toad paled in comparison to my former self, its association with the true god elevated its status to an almost untouchable level.”
"There’s nothing I can do to save you… What a waste of potential…" the goat lamented.
"...Wait," Leon interrupted, his eyes narrowing. He quickly opened the panel on his badge and was overjoyed to see that the crimson [Materialist Soul] had begun to glow faintly—though not enough to fully activate yet.
Realizing he might have found a way out, Leon smacked the goat's head hanging from his broom.
"Hurry up and tell me more!"
"Huh?" The black goat blinked, caught off guard. "Uh… You’re a promising kid, even if you are a bit stingy—can’t even spare change for boat fare—but at least you bought me cigarettes, which is more than I can say for that red-haired woman. Once you’re dead, I’ll definitely miss you a few times…"
"I didn’t ask for your eulogy! Give me intel on the toad!" Leon snapped impatiently.
Looking at the [Materialist Soul (Crimson)] effect description—"When encountering anomalies, resistance increases based on understanding"—Leon pressed urgently:
"Tell me everything you know about the toad. Every detail counts. The more, the better!"
"What’s the point? You’re about to die anyway!" the goat protested.
"Don’t argue. Just talk. Or I’ll toss you over to feed the toad."
"Tch… Fine, since you’re growing on me…"
Grumbling under its breath, the black goat sifted through its memories and began recounting what it knew:
"The Scale of Gold reveres wealth, so the three pets raised by their true god all relate to money: the Cat of Fortune, the Serpent of Consumption, and the Toad of Exchange. Their abilities correspond to gaining wealth, spending wealth for something else, and devouring items to produce gold. Among them, the toad is the strongest—it spits out vast amounts of gold and forces purchases on nearly anything. If you can’t resist the allure of money, you can’t escape its compulsive transactions. It can even—wait, why are you moving?!"
[Through the distracted ramblings of the Demon Horns, you’ve gained extensive knowledge about the "Golden Toad of Exchange." The Anomalous-colored Badge [Materialist Soul (Crimson)] has activated. Due to your understanding of the Golden Toad’s ability mechanics, your resistance to its effects has significantly increased, allowing you to mitigate general influences.]
"Keep going. Don’t stop."
Testing his legs, Leon realized that while they still felt slightly sluggish, he could now move freely. A small smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he realized he’d underestimated the black goat’s usefulness.
The information provided by the [Demon Horns] came with three descriptors: [Corruption], [Knowledge], and [Whisper].
- [Corruption] referred to the goat’s demonic nature.
- [Whisper] likely denoted its ability to incite rage or manipulate minds.
- [Knowledge] highlighted its vast knowledge as a Greater Demon, encompassing occult expertise.
For others, such knowledge might be mere trivia. But paired with the [Materialist Soul] badge’s "greater understanding = greater resistance" mechanic, the goat’s insights became a reliable source of anomaly resistance—and potentially much stronger.
"Huh? Why’d you stop?" Leon asked sharply when the goat fell silent. Staring intently at the dim glow of the [Materialist Soul], he urged:
"Are you done explaining its abilities? What about weaknesses? Characteristics? The name of the true god? Keep talking!"
At Leon’s prodding, the black goat hesitated, unsure how to respond. Finally, it offered a resigned suggestion:
"Kid, maybe you should look up?"
Up? Could it be…
Frowning, Leon glanced around. He noticed the aging process of the crowd had inexplicably halted. His face stiffened as he slowly raised his head toward the shopping plaza’s center.
Sure enough, the massive compound eyes of the golden toad—eyes far too large for any ordinary amphibian—were locked onto him from six hundred meters away. Hundreds of smaller, eerie eyes embedded within its skin brimmed with unmistakable astonishment.
"...Seriously?"
Meeting those unsettling orbs, Leon groaned inwardly. After regaining mobility, he’d only shifted a few centimeters, careful not to draw attention. Yet here he was, singled out among tens of thousands of struggling people.
……
Strange… Is that a human?
The golden toad’s lips curled into an intrigued grin as it studied Leon, sensing the thick aura of demonic energy clinging to him.
When it answered the prayers of its followers and descended upon this plaza filled with greed and wealth, it had merely intended to kill some humans and leave. But now, there was an unexpected twist.
If it wasn’t mistaken, the cowering figure beside Leon was none other than the Greater Demon who had dared descend recklessly—and paid the price by being torn apart into seven pieces.
Rotating its massive compound eyes slightly, the toad focused on the shopping bags clutched in Leon’s hand. Its grin widened further.
Impressive.
Even reduced to such a state, a Greater Demon once near-divine in stature still has the strength to aid others in resisting my control.
Lifting its slimy right foreleg, the toad scooped up a mountain of gold coins. Fixing its gaze on the goat’s head, it clenched its webbed “hand,” instantly obliterating the pile of coins into nothingness.
Simultaneously, Leon’s world blurred. In the blink of an eye, he, along with several paving stones beneath his feet, vanished from his original position and reappeared directly before the toad, mere steps away from its gaping maw.
"O’ the chosen servant of demons"," the golden toad rumbled, its voice dripping with mockery. It eyed Leon’s rigid posture, the lingering fear in his eyes, and the broom he stubbornly clutched.
"Why resist? Don’t you wish to sell me your life?"
