Chapter 65: Old Grudges, New Grievances

Some great philosopher once said—though perhaps it was just the author making things up—that life is a circle, and no matter what you do, you always end up back where you started.

Whether or not that philosopher existed didn’t matter to Wang Ping. What mattered was that he felt trapped in his own little circle of fate. The same environment, the same misfortune, and even the same “roommate.” It was as if the universe had conspired to repeat his past torment.

From the very beginning of his "honey badger life," Wang Ping had vivid memories of the first creature he encountered—a so-called "senior" who left an indelible impression on him. After all, how often did one come across such a composed animal? Even while locked up, this senior calmly ate and drank, conserving strength before escaping with calculated precision.

Most wild animals, regardless of species or intelligence, would panic when suddenly caged. Some might even refuse food out of sheer stubbornness. Hell, even Wang Ping, despite being human at heart, hadn’t been immune to the shock—and he’d gotten quite the lecture from this very “senior.”

Now, staring at the creature before him—from its white-furred head down to the sharp claws on its feet—Wang Ping couldn’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu. That same calm demeanor, those same disdainful eyes, that same steady gait. Every detail screamed familiarity.

“So… it really is you, Senior?”

But if this truly was the same roommate who'd escaped the zoo only to be recaptured, then karma must have been having a field day. Escaping once, only to get caught again? Served him right!

“Guess they were right about fate bringing people together,” Wang Ping thought smugly. “Serves you right for ditching me last time!”

Just as he was about to revel in schadenfreude, reality hit him like a ton of bricks. Wait… wasn’t he stuck in here too? And worse still, sharing a cell with this guy again?

The memory of their first encounter flooded back—the stolen food, the beating, the forced labor, and finally, the betrayal that nearly cost him his freedom. And here was this bastard, acting as cool as ever, munching away without a care in the world?

“Aren’t you ashamed? Don’t you feel guilty?” Wang Ping growled, anger bubbling inside him.

“No way am I letting this slide,” he muttered under his breath. “I’ve adapted to this body now. I’ve mastered its coordination. Even hyenas can’t stand against me anymore. How could I possibly lose to you?”

Perhaps sensing the hostility radiating from Wang Ping’s glare, the other honey badger abruptly turned around and hissed twice, clearly unimpressed.

“You dare insult me?” Wang Ping snapped.

With revenge firmly on his mind, Wang Ping decided to strike first. Pushing off with his hind legs, he lunged forward, claws spread wide. His left paw swung hard toward the senior’s head.

Though honey badgers weren’t known for their dexterity, their agility more than made up for it. As Wang Ping attacked, the senior simply tilted his head back, dodging the blow effortlessly. But Wang Ping had anticipated this move. Mimicking a free-fighting stance, he quickly brought his right paw crashing down onto the side of the senior’s skull.

The force of the blow sent the senior sprawling to the ground.

“Heh, surprised? I know martial arts!” Wang Ping gloated.

Using the momentum of the strike, Wang Ping spun around mid-leap, planted his hind legs, and launched another attack.

“Damn you! For hitting me last time! For stealing my food! For forcing me into slave labor!”

His left paw pinned the senior’s neck to the ground while his right delivered blow after blow to the back of its head.

“Do you yield? Do you yield?!”

The senior thrashed wildly beneath him, clawing at the concrete floor and leaving white streaks behind. His hisses filled the air as he writhed and twisted, refusing to submit.

Clearly caught off guard by Wang Ping’s relentless assault, the senior showed no signs of backing down. True to form, the tough-as-nails honey badger refused to give in, no matter how hard Wang Ping struck.

“Still not yielding?”

Wang Ping increased the intensity of his blows.

Meanwhile, far away in the city, Gu Lang was frantically searching the streets, guilt weighing heavily on his shoulders.

He regretted everything.

Or rather, he hadn’t been ready to part ways with Wang Ping yet, but somehow, in his drunken haze, things had spiraled out of control. There was no joy in his heart now; instead, a deep unease settled over him, the kind that came from knowing Wang Ping wasn’t by his side. Suddenly, he felt like a stranger in a foreign land, overwhelmed by loneliness and longing to escape.

Last night, fueled by alcohol, Gu Lang had impulsively decided to find a place for Wang Ping. Tole, equally drunk, had praised him for taking responsibility. Somehow, a group of intoxicated men found a shady broker and sold Wang Ping off—not to a zoo, as intended, but literally sold him. When Gu Lang woke up the next morning, the wad of Tanzanian shillings in his bag confirmed the grim truth.

Overwhelmed with confusion, Gu Lang couldn’t remember how he’d parted ways with Tole or returned to the hotel. He barely recalled what the broker looked like. Desperate, he returned to the Canary Bar, asking anyone he could find for information. Thanks to his status as a wealthy foreigner, the duty manager assigned a security guard to assist him in tracking down the night-shift bartenders.

Back in the cage, Wang Ping’s battle with the senior honey badger reached its climax.

Though Wang Ping had started strong, he became distracted by the thrill of combat, losing focus. In that moment of carelessness, the senior broke free, twisting around to swipe at Wang Ping’s face.

Reacting quickly, Wang Ping leapt backward, narrowly avoiding the follow-up bite. He hopped around on his stubby legs, trying to find another opening.

Unfortunately, the senior didn’t give him a chance. Leaping to his feet, the honey badger charged straight at Wang Ping, aiming for his neck.

Wang Ping instinctively kicked out with his hind leg, barely avoiding a counterattack aimed at his groin. Cold sweat poured down his back.

The two rolled and tumbled together in a chaotic mess. At this point, even a zookeeper wouldn’t have been able to tell them apart.

Despite the chaos, Wang Ping’s superior strength eventually gave him the upper hand. Pinning the senior’s neck to the ground, he prepared to deliver another devastating combo. But just as he raised his paw, the senior’s body contorted unnaturally, bending at a 90-degree angle. Before Wang Ping could react, a furry rear end faced him directly.

“What the…(´゚ω゚)? Senior, what are you doing?”

Before Wang Ping could process the absurdity of the situation, a horrific stench assaulted his senses. It was as though someone had detonated a tear gas grenade inches from his face. His eyes burned shut, his nose and throat seized up, and tears, saliva, and snot streamed uncontrollably.

Instinctively retreating, Wang Ping barely took two steps before a sharp pain shot through his snout. The senior had turned and lunged, sinking his teeth into Wang Ping’s nose.

“AHHH (ಥ﹏ಥ)~~~”

“OWWW~ OW SSS~(థ౪థ)!!!”

The tiny cement enclosure erupted in a cacophony of screams, each cry more pitiful than the last, resembling nothing so much as a husky getting its paw run over by a car.
