Chapter 53: Memory
"What do you mean, 'something like that'? You need to explain it clearly."
Before Tang Fang could respond, Arroz suddenly jolted beside them, pointing upward. "Look! What is it doing?"
Countless bumps rose and fell on the surface of the one-eyed monster, faster and faster. Its blood-red eye rolled back, and its tumor-like body convulsed violently.
"What… what’s going to happen if this keeps up?"
Housen, Tang Fang, and Arroz exchanged glances. A single word flashed through their minds simultaneously: "Explosion!"
"Quick, find cover!" Housen shouted.
But it was too late. As the three scrambled like ants on a hot pan, a deafening explosion rocked the room.
Like a blooming crimson peony, the sky was instantly engulfed in a vivid red. Endless chunks of flesh mixed with torrents of blood rained down, splattering across the room like a demonic gift, painting everything in a horrifying shade of scarlet.
The blood poured down on them, soaking their hair and trickling down their faces. It dripped from the cold shells of their powered armor, falling to the ground with a steady patter.
The three stood frozen, stunned and disoriented. If one were to look closely, they would realize that the trio wasn’t merely paralyzed—they were entranced. Their pupils shimmered with fleeting images, as though a film projector was playing scene after eerie scene within their eyes.
What they saw was a gray-brown terrestrial planet—lifeless, without atmosphere or satellites. The dim light of a distant star barely reached its surface. Towering trees stood on the uneven terrain, but these weren’t ordinary trees. They had no branches or leaves, just a single stem with a dark, volcanic crater-like hollow at the center, surrounded by swirling smoke.
As time passed, the smoke around the stems thickened into clouds. Tremors shook the planet’s crust, causing the ground to crack open and magma to spill forth. One by one, the massive trees toppled, some sinking into abyssal fissures, others carried away by rivers of molten rock.
Time flowed onward, and the collapse continued. Seventy percent of the planet’s surface was soon covered in magma. Mountain ranges split apart, and vast chunks of land became isolated islands adrift in seas of fire.
The heavens collapsed; the earth shattered. The end had come.
Finally, the planet, glowing like an ember in the distance, let out a final sigh before erupting in a blinding flash of silver light. The magma surged outward like a tidal wave, twisting and churning into the endless void. The core’s explosion hurled countless rocks of varying sizes into space. They collided, tumbled, and transformed into flaming meteors, hurtling into the deep, boundless expanse of the universe.
Then, the perspective shifted, focusing on a single rock about 500 meters in diameter. During its journey, surrounding rocks were captured by the gravitational fields of nearby planets, some forming asteroid belts, others crashing onto planetary surfaces and leaving massive craters…
As time went on, fewer and fewer "companions" remained. Eventually, this rock ended its cosmic voyage, crashing onto a barren, reddish-brown planet. The impact shattered the rock into pieces, revealing something resembling the trunk of one of those colossal trees.
The first rays of dawn illuminated the meteorite crater, casting golden light onto the gray-brown tree trunk. In the distance, a faint glow emerged over the horizon, gently washing over a diamond-shaped structure.
The image froze, and a distant, mournful sigh echoed: "Holy Light…"
---
Tang Fang muttered the words "Holy Light" under his breath, blinked slowly, and exhaled deeply. He turned to look at the other two.
By now, Housen and Arroz had also snapped out of their trance. After exchanging bewildered looks, they asked in unison, "You saw it too?"
The three stared at each other, dazed. Finally, Housen swallowed hard. "Where did that vision come from? It had no beginning or end. What does it mean?"
Tang Fang remained silent for a moment before speaking gravely. "If I’m not mistaken, what we just witnessed… was the memory of the one-eyed monster."
"What? The one-eyed monster’s memory?" Housen’s face paled. "How could we see that thing’s memories? Did it use some kind of vile attack before it died, damaging our brains?"
"Ah… What do we do? What do we do?"
"Perhaps... it’s because of this blood." Tang Fang reached up to wipe the blood from his cheek, bringing his hand close to inspect it. To his surprise, the blood had already dried.. "Huh? How is this possible?" His brow furrowed in confusion as he stared at the flaking crimson stains on his fingertips.
As he hesitated, Arroz suddenly called out to them, pointing upward. "Look, what’s that?"
They followed his gaze and saw a stream of golden flames pouring from the crystal conduits, coalescing into a rotating energy sphere 200 meters in diameter. At the end of the "diode" was a claw-like cone mechanism. Every few seconds, a bolt of violet lightning shot out, piercing the energy sphere and creating swirling vortexes.
The energy sphere and the violet lightning gave off an unsettling aura, like a lurking predator waiting to strike at any moment. From the moment Arroz laid eyes on it, he never doubted its immense power. Sure enough, even the advanced energy wave detection equipment of the marine armor couldn’t measure its intensity.
"Damn it! How did this happen?" Tang Fang spat out the words, his voice laced with urgency. Without another moment's hesitation, he barked at Arroz, "Arroz, calculate the days!" Then he leapt onto the platform with lightning speed and extended his hands toward the psionic flame.
"Calculate the days?" Arroz frowned, closing his helmet visor. When he glanced at the date display in the lower-right corner of his screen, his expression changed. "Three days? Three whole days!"
He opened his visor and looked at Housen, who appeared equally baffled. Housen slapped the helmet of his Marauder armor repeatedly, muttering to himself, "Hey, hey, buddy, don’t mess with me. Are you telling me three days passed just because we watched a movie? What kind of cosmic joke is this?"
Connecting Tang Fang’s earlier question with Housen’s mumbling, Arroz swallowed hard and forced a bitter smile. "Three days… it really has been three days."
Meanwhile, Tang Fang had no time to respond. His full attention was focused on controlling the psionic flame. As the runes around the flame rotated, the ceaseless bolts of violet lightning within the diodes gradually calmed, eventually fading away. The rows of machinery on the upper level of the room also ceased operation, entering a dormant state.
Half an hour later, as damaged and semi-damaged facilities were shut down, the rotation of the golden energy sphere in the air slowed, its fluctuation frequency gradually stabilizing.
"Phew…" Tang Fang exhaled deeply, slowly withdrawing his hands. He wiped the cold sweat mixed with blood from his forehead and said with lingering unease, "Good thing we noticed it in time. If we’d waited even a little longer… boom…"
The other two breathed a collective sigh of relief. Arroz looked up at him, his face etched with bitterness. "Three days… it’s already been three days."
