Chapter 52: My Life for Aiur
From the very beginning of the battle, he had noticed a peculiar detail. The crystalline conduits extending from outside into the room, along with those devices resembling "diodes," all converged within the body of the one-eyed monstrosity.
Reflecting on the entire course of the fight, a possibility came to mind. The creature's godlike regenerative abilities were likely fueled by the golden flames and violet lightning that coursed through its form. Otherwise, how could it possibly sustain such peak performance? Consider the countless flower-like mandibles adorning its whip-like appendages—tens of thousands of them. It was constantly maintaining acid rain, healing itself, incubating bat-like demons, and firing laser beams. Even with its colossal size, there was no way it could endure such an immense energy drain without external support.
From the earlier events—the monster shielding itself with an energy barrier, luring the three of them into the room, and sealing the rune-inscribed door—it was clear that it had gained partial control over the ancient ruins. In this context, absorbing energy from the ruins to bolster itself seemed only natural.
With this realization, Tang Fang gave a brief order to his companions: "Stay hidden, don't come out." Then, he strode toward the central control hub.
All combat units received the directive to fall back and defend at all costs. Within the system space, a Pylon had already been activated, summoning twelve new Zealots who joined the eight existing ones. They surrounded Tang Fang in a tight circle, forming a wall of flesh and steel.
The Zerg Queen, fully healed Spine Crawlers, the remaining Roaches, and the Terran forces held the flanks, working tirelessly to clear away the writhing tendrils.
Through the gaps between the Zealots’ bodies, Tang Fang glanced up at the one-eyed behemoth. To his surprise, the blood-red eye locked onto him, their gazes meeting—one small, one large—in midair.
He took a deep breath, slowly raised his right arm, and flipped off the grotesque, tumor-like monster with a defiant middle finger. "Fuck you!"
Then, he thrust both arms forward, his fingers passing through what felt like a transparent curtain of water, inching closer to the pulsating mass of psionic flame.
Whether enraged by his insult or fearful of what he intended to do next, the one-eyed monster unleashed hundreds of its whip-like appendages, twisting them into crimson spears that shot toward Tang Fang amidst the crowd.
At the same time, a blinding blue light erupted from the center of its bloody eye, unleashing a tsunami of laser energy that surged toward them.
Against the barrage of blood-spears, six Spine Crawlers swung into action, their spines slicing through the air in wide arcs, entangling dozens of tendrils before yanking them back in a deadly tug-of-war. The remaining eight Marines and seven Marauders wasted no time injecting themselves with the last doses of stimpacks. Their health bars turned red, but their combat effectiveness skyrocketed by 50%. Metal spikes and Judicator grenades flew like locusts into the sky, mingling with splashes of blood and flashes of explosions, creating a surreal rainbow of death under the piercing blue lasers.
"My life for Aiur!" One Zealot after another leapt into the air, using their bodies as shields. Unwavering and fearless, they charged headlong into the radiant sea of azure light.
Plasma shields dissolved rapidly, golden armor softened visibly, and searing burns crept across their ash-gray skin. Below, the Zerg Queen spat out a glob of nourishing fluid, but it only delayed the inevitable. One by one, the Zealots vanished into the endless blue, yet for every fallen warrior, another stepped up. They followed in the footsteps of their predecessors, vowing to protect the unassuming figure behind them with their lives.
Tang Fang held the psionic flame in his hands, its wispy threads clinging tightly to his wrists. A faint glow of cerulean flowed along his veins. From the moment he established a connection with the flame, halos of light began to swirl around it. Upon closer inspection, they revealed countless tiny runes, each no larger than an ant.
Initially, the flame remained still, but as time passed, it began to rotate gently, resembling a miniature sun radiating soft light. The strange runes flowed along strands of light into Tang Fang’s left hand, traveling up his arm, climbing to his left cheek, converging into a flowing ε at his forehead, then cascading down his right cheek and returning to the flame via his right wrist, completing a circuit.
As the runes coursed through him, Tang Fang’s expression shifted rapidly—from apprehension to calm, astonishment, awe, and finally joy. His face transformed so quickly it was as if he were auditioning for a role in a movie studio.
Two more Zealots dissolved into streams of energy, leaving Tang Fang utterly alone. The one-eyed monster’s malevolent eye flared with an intense blue light, preparing another devastating laser strike.
With the Zealots gone and the rest of the forces occupied restraining the tendrils, who would shield them from the impending doom?
Watching the laser grow from a single point into an overwhelming wave about to erupt once more, Arroz’s eyes widened in fury. "Tang Fang, what the hell are you doing?!" he roared, darting out from cover in a desperate attempt to shove Tang Fang out of harm's way.
Startled by Arroz’s shout, Tang Fang looked up just as the vast expanse of blue descended upon them like a tidal wave.
There was no way Arroz could outrun the laser. Death awaited them both.
In that critical moment, a fierce glint flashed in Tang Fang’s eyes. The cerulean threads around his wrists surged, and the psionic flame erupted in a blinding burst of silver-white light.
The dazzling brilliance mingled with the encroaching azure, bathing them in a rain of lethal illumination. Arroz’s vision went blank, and he felt himself collide with another body. Momentum carried them tumbling down from the platform, crashing onto the ground below.
"Huh?" Pain jolted him awake as his body hit the floor. Arroz rubbed his forehead and blinked open his eyes. "Huh? We’re still alive?"
Not far away, Tang Fang struggled to rise, wincing from bruises.
"At my speed, I should’ve been unable to dodge that laser," Arroz muttered, shaking his dazed head. He glanced upward.
The psionic flame had nearly doubled in size, its fiery intensity radiating concentric rings of silvery-white light.
But Arroz’s gaze didn’t linger on the flame. Instead, it darted to the massive one-eyed monster in the center of the room.
For some unknown reason, the laser attack had ceased. The bloated creature now trembled violently, its movements resembling the death throes of a dying beast.
Its blood-red eye glared hatefully toward the platform. Arroz froze. Throughout the battle, the monster’s gaze had been cold and mechanical, devoid of emotion. But now, it burned with hatred—it was afraid!
Bumps rose and receded across its tumor-like surface, shifting positions rhythmically. Each bump swelled, contracted, swelled again, and contracted once more, repeating endlessly, as though something alive writhed inside, churning chaos within.
"What’s wrong with it? Did it eat something it shouldn’t have? Indigestion?" Housen remarked dryly as he cautiously approached, noting the cessation of the monster’s area-of-effect attacks.
Tang Fang straightened, rubbing his bruised temple while casting a sidelong glance at Housen. "Something like that," he replied casually.
