Chapter 54: The Super Refinery
"Just like I thought." Tang Fang sighed deeply, turning his gaze toward the slowly rotating energy sphere suspended in midair. If it had only been a fleeting moment, there was no way such an immense concentration of energy could have accumulated.
"Housen, what are you doing?!" Arroz's sudden shout startled Tang Fang. He turned to see Housen mimicking him, reaching out both hands toward the psionic flame.
"You fool, stop!" Without thinking twice, Tang Fang pressed his right hand on Housen's shoulder and yanked him back with all his might.
But it was too late. The soft, cotton-like strands of light that had appeared harmless from afar suddenly snapped taut, lashing across Housen’s hands like lightning.
"Ahh…!" A blood-curdling scream echoed as Housen collapsed onto the ground, clutching his bleeding hands and wailing without any regard for dignity. Blood seeped through the gaps between his fingers, dripping steadily onto the floor. Fortunately, Tang Fang had acted swiftly enough to pull him away; otherwise, those razor-sharp threads of light would have severed every one of his fingers.
"Housen, can’t you ever stop being so reckless? You freaking idiot!"
Tang Fang stared at the impulsive man before him, torn between anger and amusement. This guy was nothing but a brute—a hothead who charged into everything without thinking things through. Yet, he was also insatiably curious, like a child who’d never seen the world. Anything unfamiliar or unknown, he felt compelled to touch, to examine.
Curiosity killed the cat—and it could kill people too! How this guy had survived this long was beyond comprehension.
Arroz shot Housen a cold, unsympathetic glance, pulling out a cigar and lighting it with a flick of his lighter. Taking a long drag, he exhaled a slow plume of smoke. "Housen, didn’t you always brag about your infallible instincts? So how did you manage to screw yourself over again?"
Housen winced in pain, glaring up at Arroz with gritted teeth. "How the hell was I supposed to know what was going on here? It seems whenever Epsilon tech is involved, my instincts go haywire."
He paused for a moment, then suddenly jerked his head up, eyes gleaming with suspicion as he fixed them on Tang Fang. "Why did I get hurt when I touched that flame, but you didn’t?"
After pondering for a moment, Tang Fang replied, "I’m not entirely sure myself. Maybe it’s because I absorbed the core of the statue guardian earlier. The system might have mistaken me for one of the Epsilons and granted me full access privileges."
Seeing their bewildered expressions, he added after a brief pause, "Let’s just say... I seem to understand the Epsilon language now."
"What?!" Both men gawked at him, their eyes wide as saucers, scrutinizing him as if he were some kind of alien creature. Was he serious? Had he really mastered the Epsilon language? For over two centuries, linguists across the universe had poured endless resources and effort into deciphering the Epsilon script, yet none had succeeded. And here he was, claiming to have cracked it effortlessly?
Mastering the Epsilon language meant something monumental. It meant he could easily unlock the secrets of ancient technologies hidden within ruins—secrets that even the Empire’s military couldn’t unravel despite deploying countless research vessels and decryption experts working day and night, only managing to scrape together fragments of knowledge from entire technological trees.
"You don’t believe me?" Tang Fang smirked at their stunned faces, then turned toward the control hub. With graceful precision, he extended his arms into the glowing interface, allowing the shimmering threads of light to gently coil around his wrists.
A flash of radiant light illuminated the chamber as ethereal blue characters began to swirl around the psionic flame, linking together in a continuous loop. Then, beams of azure light radiated from the center of the flame, weaving intricate patterns in midair until a vibrant, three-dimensional holographic image materialized.
The image depicted an elliptical sphere, deliberately divided into two sections. The upper portion, spanning more than 400 kilometers, represented the planet’s crust and most of its mantle. The lower section, however, had been isolated and reconstructed into a separate, standalone model.
This second sphere was similarly elliptical, though its surface was crisscrossed with concentric rings of light. These rings encircled the globe like lines of longitude, converging at the axis.
As Tang Fang issued new commands, one of the glowing rings shifted to a different area and expanded. The brilliance faded, revealing two elongated structures resembling parallel train tracks. Between these structures, red-highlighted spots marked points of intersection at regular intervals.
One of the red markers blinked, then zoomed in further, displaying a scene that left Arroz and Housen utterly speechless.
It was a massive chamber filled with densely packed, layered arrays of sophisticated machinery. But none of that mattered compared to what lay at the very bottom of the room: three tiny black dots standing amidst the equipment. Upon closer inspection, they were unmistakably themselves—Tang Fang, Housen, and Arroz.
At that moment, any lingering doubts about Tang Fang’s words evaporated completely.
"Gulp." Housen swallowed hard. "T-Tang Fang… What… what exactly is going on here? What the hell did the Epsilons build on this planet?!"
Tang Fang withdrew his hands, pointing at the glowing rings with a grave expression. "Each of these halos represents a colossal workshop composed of quantum-level torque regulators, nuclear fusion modules, and various auxiliary mechanisms. They’re essentially the same elongated buildings we encountered during our battle with the bat demons."
"In simpler terms," he continued, "the entire complex is designed to harness the nuclear fission energy emanating from Planet Namie’s core. This energy is infused with a special substance, compressed into a liquid state, and then catalyzed by quantum-level torque regulators—essentially 'fermenting' it—to combine with Element Zero, creating an entirely new isotope of Element Zero."
"This new isotope is far superior to ordinary Element Zero in terms of stability, safety, and versatility. Moreover, it contains vastly greater amounts of energy."
"In other words," Tang Fang concluded, "Planet Namie itself functions as a supermassive Element Zero refinery!"
Housen and Arroz were utterly dumbfounded. Tang Fang’s explanation hit them like a biological EMP bomb, overloading every neural processing unit in their brains.
Using an entire planet as a nuclear reactor? Such technology was still purely theoretical in human society.
And Element Zero? Compared to the Epsilons’ 100% refinement rate, humanity’s paltry 48% seemed laughable.
An isotope of Element Zero? Humanity’s current level of science couldn’t even fully analyze the microscopic structure of Element Zero, let alone create isotopes. To them, the concept was as distant and unattainable as the flawless, jade-white body of a celestial maiden—something they’d heard of, dreamed of, but never seen, much less touched.
"Y-you’re not lying to us, are you?" Arroz finally managed to stammer after what felt like an eternity.
Tang Fang shrugged, offering a faint smile but no verbal response. He knew Arroz wasn’t questioning him—it was sheer astonishment speaking.
Housen snatched the half-smoked cigar from Arroz’s lips, taking a deep puff and exhaling a long stream of smoke shaped like a dragon before regaining his composure. "So… does that mean the entire ruin is under your control now?"
