Chapter 51: Death Ray
Faced with the relentless downpour of highly corrosive acid rain, the Terran soldiers were the first to suffer casualties. The armored shells of the marines quickly dissolved under the deluge, forming gaping holes that allowed the acid to seep in, melting flesh and bone into pools of putrid sludge.
There were no screams, no cries of anguish. These bio-engineered soldiers, immune to pain, continued firing their weapons as long as they could stand and hold a gun—even if only one hand or leg remained.
The marauders’ vanadium alloy armor was thicker and more resistant to corrosion than the marine’s, but as time wore on, the acid splashed onto their bodies began to take its toll. The once-durable metal started to weaken, flaking off in brittle chunks.
One marine fell, then another… As the stimpack effects wore off, two marauders failed to dodge the lashing tendrils. With a swift jerk, they were yanked into the air. A torrent of acid erupted from the flower-like maws above, cascading over them like a waterfall. Within moments, the two marauders disintegrated into piles of charred remains, which slid to the ground along with the viscous liquid.
In less than ten minutes, nine marines had perished, seven marauders lay dead, and even the zealots surrounding Tang Fang were beginning to falter. Their shields steadily depleted under the ceaseless acid rain, and within Tang Fang's field of vision, the frontmost four zealots were critically wounded, their health indicators plummeting rapidly.
The creature's acid was unimaginably potent—far surpassing anything Tang Fang had encountered before, including the bat-like monsters. Watching his marines and marauders fall one after another filled him with an unbearable sense of loss. Armor could be repaired by SCVs in the system space, but lives? Once lost, there was no way to bring them back.
He never expected this seemingly immobile cyclopean beast to be so formidable. Glancing at Housen and Arroz, who cowered behind machinery, barely able to lift their heads amidst the acid storm, Tang Fang clenched his teeth and summoned every available combat unit he had left.
Twelve queens, six Spine Crawlers, twenty zerglings, and one Reaper emerged. Not stopping there, he ordered larvae to accelerate the hatching process, producing sixteen roaches as quickly as possible.
The queens' primary task upon deployment was to heal the injured Terran soldiers. The zerglings were positioned ahead of the zealots to relieve pressure from the front lines, while the roaches—those tank-like creatures—were thrust forward as living shields, replacing the decimated Terran forces and taking up the brunt of the assault.
Meanwhile, the Spine Crawlers, renowned for their devastating firepower, focused their attacks on the largest organ embedded in the tumor-like mass: the sinister eye at the center of the creature’s body.
As the battle raged on, Tang Fang noticed something peculiar. The acid attacks inflicted significant damage on the zerglings, queens, and even the Spine Crawlers. However, when it came to the roaches, the corrosive effects seemed negligible. Even repeated hits merely left shallow scars on the thick carapaces of these grotesque, sedan-sized creatures. Similarly, the roaches’ saliva appeared to have little effect on the monster.
“Strange…” Tang Fang murmured. “Could there be some kind of connection between this one-eyed beast and the roaches?”
Reality soon provided an answer. Perhaps startled by the sudden influx of reinforcements, the creature’s surface began to bulge with tumor-like growths. These masses wriggled downward toward the anus-like openings beneath its body. With each contraction of the sphincter muscles, globular spores coated in sticky mucus dropped to the floor.
What happened next shocked Tang Fang and his companions to their core. One by one, the spores fell from a height of over thirty meters, smashing onto the ground with loud pops. Membranes peeled away, revealing newborn bat-like creatures. They straightened their bodies, raised their heads, and let out ear-splitting bellows.
“OH MY GOD!” Housen stared in disbelief at the revolting sight. He had never imagined that the bats outside were being spawned by this monstrosity—a grotesque, evil mother capable of birthing such horrors.
A dozen of the newly hatched bat-creatures let out low growls, targeting the roaches encircling the one-eyed monster. Ignoring the slime dripping from their wings, they leapt into action, using their sharp claws to latch onto the nearest roach. Flapping their wet wings furiously, they ascended into the air, either soaring high or crashing chaotically into rows of machinery.
At the same time, the Spine Crawlers tasked with attacking the blood-red eye suffered catastrophic damage. Across the cold, malevolent surface of the central eye, countless deep-blue web-like patterns spread. From the center of the pupil, a laser beam wider than fifty meters shot forth, engulfing six incoming spines in an instant.
“Zzzt…”
Piercing, agonized screeches echoed through the chamber. Tang Fang turned to see three Spine Crawlers writhing helplessly, their legs thrashing violently as they emitted shrill, grating sounds. The other three, though spared the destruction of their dorsal spines, bore varying degrees of burn injuries.
Laser! It was a laser! Despite its biological structure, the creature could emit a deadly death ray! Tang Fang, Housen, and Arroz collectively gasped in horror.
The sheer number of whip-like tendrils—resembling vegetable irrigation systems—was overwhelming. Acid sprayed indiscriminately, saturating the battlefield. Even with the healing abilities of the queens, the numbers of marines and marauders dwindled relentlessly. Of the twenty zerglings, only five remained mobile.
The zealot squad also suffered heavy losses. Unable to engage in ranged combat, these powerful warriors were reduced to serving as meat shields. Yet, despite their robust physiques and potent plasma shields, six zealots eventually succumbed to the unrelenting assault, dissolving into flames of Protoss energy and vanishing into nothingness.
Sweat dripped down Tang Fang’s forehead, tracing lines along his cheeks. Though he still possessed ample resources to produce another wave of defensive units, what good would it do? Against the endless tide of attacks from the one-eyed behemoth, his forces would inevitably be whittled away to nothing.
With its massive body, whether marines, marauders, queens, or Spine Crawlers, all inflicted minimal damage. And with its godlike regenerative abilities, it utterly outclassed every unit under his command.
It had corrosive acid, thousands of tendrils, the ability to spawn bat-monsters, and now, a devastating death ray. Faced with such a terrifying adversary, death seemed like the most fitting conclusion.
Unless he could land a fatal blow, all efforts would be in vain.
Tang Fang took a deep breath, his gaze piercing through the gaps between the zealots to focus on the flickering psionic flame at the heart of the control hub.
“There’s not much time left,” he thought grimly. “Success or failure hinges on this final move.”
