Chapter 28: The Investigation Mission (Part 4)
"Uncle John, this is Leon, the brother of the girl who saved Hanna's life." Noticing that the burly old man seemed somewhat off, harboring an inexplicable hostility towards Leon, the refined middle-aged man quickly interjected with an explanation.
"Do you remember the pipeline explosion at the hospital the day before yesterday? He was the one who risked his life to shut off the valve, saving hundreds of lives."
"Oh?" Upon hearing about Leon's heroic deed, a flicker of emotion finally crossed the rigid face of the stout elder. His twisted lips curled into what could barely be called a smile—more like a grimace—and without warning, he lunged forward with blinding speed, gently tapping the chins of the middle-aged nurse and her husband.
Caught off guard by the sudden attack, the couple didn't even have time to gasp before they collapsed, eyes rolling back as they fainted on the spot.
But just before the burly old man struck them down, Leon had already pushed the unconscious pair toward him and turned to flee, bolting straight into the inner room where the nurse slept.
"Tsk..."
Seeing Leon’s quick thinking, the old man, who was about to draw his massive pruning shears, clicked his tongue in annoyance. Before the couple hit the ground, he caught them—one in each arm—and gently laid them down on the carpet.
After ensuring the two were safely settled, the cigar stub that had been extinguished in the corner of his mouth reignited itself. Without hesitation, the old man reached into the basket on his back, pulling out the intimidatingly large gardening shears. With a cold, stony expression, he limped toward the inner room, dragging the monstrous tool behind him.
...
Damn it... Finally, I come across an anomaly on the "good side," but because my soul is tainted with demonic scent, I end up getting chased by it instead. Could my luck get any worse?
As the eerie sound of metal scraping against the floor echoed through the air, Leon’s face darkened. No longer caring if he damaged the nurse's property, he kicked hard at the window lock.
"Squeak!"
The metallic screech of the deformed lock filled the air as Leon forced it open. He yanked the window wide and prepared to leap out, desperate to escape the clearly formidable old man.
But just then, a wave of dizziness washed over him, followed by the unhurried voice of the black Goat ringing in his ears.
Kid! I advise you not to jump!
Leon froze for a split second.
Why shouldn’t he jump? That hulking brute with the giant shears was almost upon him. If he didn’t jump now, did the goat expect him to stay and fight? Sure, the guy was lame, but his sheer size…
Wait a minute!
In a flash, Leon reached into his shopping bag, brushing his hand against the goat head once more. To his utter shock, he realized that the murderous soul of the old man had already slipped through the floorboards like a slippery fish, slowly advancing directly beneath him.
If Leon climbed out the window and started descending via the anti-theft grating, he’d be ambushed between the second and third floors by the old man wielding those massive shears!
Cunning bastard! This old geezer is diabolical!
Suppressing the urge to curse aloud, Leon spun around and bolted out of the inner room. He vaulted over the unconscious couple, burst through the door, and dashed down the stairs, clutching the goat head tightly.
Ignoring the pain shooting through his knees, Leon leaped down five or six steps at a time, covering half a flight in mere seconds. He pushed himself to run faster than ever before, his legs pumping furiously as he hurtled toward the ground floor.
It seemed the old man’s soul, visible through Leon’s Soul Vision, hesitated momentarily when it realized Leon hadn’t jumped out the window. Then, with deliberate slowness, it began moving toward the staircase.
Faster, kid! Or he’ll catch up to you~
The black goat’s taunting voice sent a jolt of panic through Leon. Realizing his speed still wasn’t enough, he gritted his teeth and grabbed onto the stair railings during turns, using them to pivot more quickly between flights.
But the apartment building, though well-built, was aging. Splinters of wood jutted from the banister, slicing into Leon’s palms until they bled freely. Worse still, losing control of his body while careening downward caused his arms to wrench painfully whenever he let go too late, leaving his muscles strained and sore.
Yet all these pains were drowned out by the chilling clatter of the giant shears opening and closing behind him. Fueled by adrenaline, Leon moved like lightning, weaving through the stairwell with incredible agility. In mere moments, he managed to shake off the relentless pursuer, racing from the fifth floor all the way back to the lobby.
Finally... I made it out alive!
Spotting the open entrance just a few steps away, bathed in brilliant sunlight, Leon staggered toward freedom. But just as he reached the threshold, his foot snagged on something, throwing him off balance. He tumbled forward uncontrollably, crashing to the ground.
What the hell... Yarn? Is this the yarn the old manager used for knitting?
Recognizing the tangled mess around his feet, Leon paused briefly, intending to untangle himself. But before he could act, the black goat’s voice sighed resignedly in his mind.
Rest in peace, kid. I’ll miss you.
Huh?! What the fuck are you talking about?!
Realization dawned on Leon as he snapped his head up, his heart nearly leaping out of his throat. In the instant he tripped over the yarn, the old man—who had fallen far behind—sensed the disturbance like a spider detecting prey on its web. Following the thread embedded deep within the walls, he charged forward, brandishing the enormous shears.
Shit!
Facing the gleaming, razor-sharp blades now fully extended, Leon instinctively raised the shopping bag containing the goat head and swung it upward with all his might.
"CLANG!!!"
The deafening crash sounded like a cleaver striking stone. Leon felt his arms go numb as the force of the impact sent him flying backward, tumbling head over heels several times before crashing outside the Happiness Residence’s entrance.
………..
AAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!
MY HORN! IT’S CHIPPED!!!
I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU DID THIS! YOU BASTARD! HOW DARE YOU USE ME AS A SHIELD! THIS ISN’T OVER, BASTARD!
……….
Finally, I made it out... All I did was go there to ask a few questions, and I nearly lost my life. This damn job at the Cleansing Bureau really isn’t meant for humans...
Amidst the black goat’s furious, profanity-laden "telegrams," Leon—his entire body aching unbearably—painfully lifted his head and forced himself to take a look at the apartment. Seeing the old man standing grim-faced at the doorway, holding the massive shears but making no move to pursue further, Leon finally exhaled in relief.
With trembling hands, he flipped the old man the bird, then collapsed back onto the pavement, gasping for breath under the glaring sun.
What a piece of crap, this "Happiness Residence"! Never coming back here again!
