Chapter 41: The Elephant Graveyard
Ten minutes later, the live stream finally stabilized.
During those ten minutes, all viewers saw were swaying fabrics on the screen and faint panting sounds in the background. Honestly, it was a bit unsettling. If they hadn’t known that the streamer was running for his life, one might have thought he was up to something inappropriate based solely on the audio.
By now, Gu Lang had managed to perch himself on a branch of another tree, leaning against the trunk while pointing the tablet back toward the herd of elephants. He’d been chased over here by Wang Ping from the neighboring branch.
Gu Lang didn’t seem to realize what he’d done wrong. Perplexed by Wang Ping’s sudden outburst, he couldn’t fight back or reason with him, so he reluctantly moved to a different branch. Had he known that he’d accidentally kicked Wang Ping off the tree earlier, he’d probably be sweating bullets right about now.
After the camera steadied, the elephant herd reappeared on screen. This time, the view was wider, clearly filmed from an elevated vantage point. Through the herd, the fallen bodies of the mother elephant and her calf were visible on the grass below.
“Holy shit!”
“A streamer who knows how to climb trees is a good streamer.”
“The speed at which this guy climbs trees is insane.”
“I knew it would come down to climbing trees eventually.”
“Green Robe And White Hair gifted two planes…”
“Slaying Three Thousand Demons gifted 666 membership cards…”
“666 membership cards—don’t complain, bro, you deserve every one of them.”
“Big bro, stay steady!”
“This is how a real streamer performs.”
Meanwhile, in Hangzhou, Gu Lang’s parents and grandmother, who had been holding their breaths in worry, finally exhaled in relief. The elderly woman relaxed, glanced at the police officer who had been keeping them company and the people in the outer hall, then subtly signaled to her daughter.
“What’s wrong, Mom?” Gu Lang’s mother asked, puzzled.
“Go buy some drinks,” the elder whispered.
The middle-aged woman immediately understood. She grabbed her handbag, stood up, and headed outside, pulling her husband along with her.
“What’s going on?” Gu Lang’s father turned to look at his wife, confused.
“Come with me for a moment.”
“Oh, I want to keep watching. You can handle whatever it is yourself.” Gu Lang’s father waved dismissively, eyes glued to the computer screen.
“Just get out here! Stop arguing!” Gu Lang’s mother dragged him out without waiting for him to say anything.
The police officer sitting in front of the computer gave the couple a curious glance. Seeing this, Gu Lang’s grandmother quickly smiled and said, “Officer, could you help me send a message again?”
Of course, Gu Lang didn’t see the comment that read, “Dear grandson, be careful!” If he had, he’d likely have jumped in anger—and possibly fallen as well.
At this moment, however, he was utterly stunned by the scene before him.
It wasn’t just him; even the once-casual onlookers in the live chat were equally shocked—not because the sight was beautiful or tragic, but because it was bizarre.
From the elevated perspective, the scattered herd of elephants could now be seen returning one by one. Each returning elephant carried something in its trunk: saplings uprooted from the forest edge, patches of turf still clinging to dirt, branches snapped off from low trees, and even rocks pushed along with their tusks toward the center.
Though no such behavior existed in documentaries about wildlife, some viewers already guessed what these elephants were doing.
Gu Lang paused for a moment, then zoomed in with the tablet. From this angle, the pool of blood in the center of the herd came into full view. Even Gu Lang himself was seeing it clearly for the first time.
The massive body, nearly six meters long, lay sprawled on the ground. Its long trunk stretched out stiffly in front, clearly having been pulled apart by human hands. Deep gashes ran across both cheeks, extending all the way to the eyes, almost splitting open the skull and exposing the mouth within. Both tusks had been brutally extracted, leaving gaping, bloody holes behind.
In the very center of the forehead, a fist-sized wound gaped ominously.
It was gruesome. And horrifying.
This was Gu Lang’s first time witnessing the direct wounds inflicted by firearms on an animal. Unlike the neat bullet holes shown on TV, the damage here spoke volumes about the weapon’s lethality. Imagining such a shot hitting a human sent chills down anyone’s spine.
But what truly broke hearts was the small elephant lying near the female’s forelegs.
Compared to the adult elephant, the calf barely reached knee height—a juvenile. Its tiny body was riddled with holes, drenched in blood, looking pitiful and heart-wrenching.
“Fuck! This is too much.” A rare, coherent comment scrolled past.
“Motherfuker, these bastards are animals themselves.”
“I was just about to send gifts to the streamer, but I’ve lost the mood.”
“Good job, streamer. Such evil needs to be exposed.”
“The baby elephant is so pitiful…”
“Fuck, I suddenly feel like punching someone.”
“These bastards should be captured and executed.”
“This is unbearable.”
“Where are the rangers? Don’t they patrol armed abroad?”
“Shouldn’t we report this to the authorities?”
“Reporting won’t do any good. Do you even know where this is?”
Gu Lang fell silent. Words hovered on the tip of his tongue, but he didn’t know how to express them. All he could do was remain quiet.
Meanwhile, at a military base in Karatu, preparations were underway for an armed helicopter to take off. In the barracks beside the helipad, Zhang Jianming and several officers stared silently at the screen.
The officers refrained from speaking freely in front of Zhang Jianming, unsure of what to say. As for Zhang, he too was at a loss for words.
Cracking down on poachers was technically an internal matter for the host country. It wasn’t easy for Zhang to intervene directly. He couldn’t exactly say, “The poachers in your country are running rampant—go deal with them!”
Working at the embassy required composure and calm judgment under all circumstances. Yet, despite being accustomed to such atrocities in this country, the sight before him ignited an uncontrollable rage deep within.
The location of the incident was clear—it was inside a nearby reserve. And the distance between Karatu’s troops and the site? Only 20 kilometers. The audacity of these poachers was staggering.
“Zhang, we’ll catch them!” The First Lieutenant patted Zhang Jianming on the shoulder.
“I hope so.” Zhang sighed deeply.
As his gaze returned to the screen, he froze momentarily.
By now, the elephants had begun covering the bodies of their fallen companions with the debris they’d gathered. Once done, they turned around to search for more materials. Even the younger calves followed suit, clumsily using their trunks to lift objects they found.
Occasionally, a mournful trumpet echoed through the forest, as if lamenting the senseless tragedy.
Above, the clouds that had dispersed earlier regathered, slowly blocking out the sunlight. A drizzle began creeping in from the northwest, spreading across the plains like a sudden fog, attempting to obscure everything that had transpired.
Gu Lang made no move to seek shelter. Of course, perched on his tree branch, he had nowhere better to go anyway.
At that moment, a realization dawned on him. Perhaps he was the only human witness capable of documenting this event.
At the same time, just two kilometers away, hidden behind a mound of volcanic rock, a young man with dreadlocks and wearing khaki combat gear suddenly raised his head in surprise. Holding his Huawei phone, he exclaimed to his companion, “Hey, Tuka, guess what? I actually found a Wi-Fi signal!”
Opposite him, two Great Wall pickup trucks were parked. In the back of one, a white tusk peeked out from beneath a sack.
