Chapter 27: The Investigation Mission (Part 3)

[Name: Spirit Dwelling (Miracle, Guardian)]

[Appearance: An old, ordinary apartment building. In the lobby, a duty room is perpetually occupied by an elderly woman with curly white hair, a slightly hunched back, and bowlegs..]

[Ability: Evil Entity Extermination, Accident Avoidance]

[Cost: Smile and greet the manager when you leave in the morning. If you have time, chat with her about daily life. If possible, treat her ailing husband kindly as well.]

[Record: This apartment was originally a workhouse built on No. 35 Shipbridge Street in the old downtown area of the capital city. It was donated by an elderly couple who had lost their daughter late in life. For years, it provided free shelter and basic welfare to war orphans and disabled individuals.

[About ninety-five years ago, after the elderly couple passed away, the workhouse was shut down due to its lack of registration as a legal welfare facility by the Department of Public Works and because no one continued to pay property taxes. After being forcibly cleared out and renovated, it was renamed "Happiness Residence" and rented out to tenants.

[However, strangely enough, despite being located near the sub-center of the old city area—close to numerous businesses, institutions, and government offices—and offering livable conditions, convenient transportation, and low rent, the occupancy rate of Happiness Residence remains abysmally low, at less than thirty percent. Most tenants move out within a month, and only a handful manage to stay long-term.]

[Evaluation: This is an excellent apartment for ordinary people to live in for a lifetime. It can protect its residents from harm, ensure smooth lives, and keep disasters at bay. Unfortunately, your compatibility with this place is extremely poor.]

[Contamination Value: 0.1]

"..."

So... the entire building is an anomaly? And that manager lady who insisted on bringing me upstairs—is she part of the anomaly too?

After reading through the information displayed before him, Leon couldn’t help but shiver involuntarily. He quickly turned to the middle-aged nurse couple standing in front of him and asked urgently: "How long have you two lived here? Do you know how old that old manager is?"

"Huh?" Caught off guard by Leon's sudden question, the couple exchanged glances. The scholarly-looking man hesitated before answering:

"For how long… I moved here when I first started teaching at Shipbridge Academy. Later, I met Hanna, who also rented here... That must have been around twenty-seven or twenty-eight years ago. As for Aunt Mary, she already had white hair when I first arrived. She must be close to ninety now, but since she has no real worries and takes good care of herself, she looks much younger."

"..."

Ninety years old... A ninety-year-old climbing stairs faster than me? And earlier, when she snatched the shopping bag, her movements were so quick—I barely dodged her! How does she not seem like someone over ninety?

Wait a minute! Although the report from my [Materialist Soul] didn’t explicitly say it, between the lines, combined with the name [Spirit Dwelling]...

Could she and her ailing husband be the same elderly couple who built the workhouse and died over ninety years ago? But... why did she act so wary of me when we just met?

With this thought nagging at him, Leon’s mind raced furiously. When he saw the phrase “poor compatibility” in the evaluation section, realization hit him like a ton of bricks.

With a sinking feeling, Leon opened his interface panel and found the badge he’d received from the black goat—the [Demon’s Votary]. His eyes immediately darted to the hidden attribute at the bottom.

[Hidden Attribute (No Need to Equip): Your soul now carries traces of demonic taint, making you more noticeable to certain malevolent entities.]

"..."

Now it all made sense...

The relentless interrogation upon entering, the old manager’s refusal to bring him inside earlier, and even her abrupt grab for the shopping bag—all these questions suddenly fell into place.

To an apartment with the ability [Evil Entity Extermination], someone like him, whose soul bore traces of demonic taint, was nothing short of an unwelcome guest. And the black goat, a Greater Demon itself, was the epitome of evil!

KNOCK! KNOCK-KNOCK!

Just as Leon pieced everything together, a heavy pounding echoed from outside the door. The middle-aged man opened it to reveal a towering, muscular old man wearing nothing but a sleeveless undershirt despite the late autumn chill. Clenching a cigar between his teeth, the burly figure crushed it with two fingers after giving a curt nod to the surprised tenant. With a raspy voice, he growled:

"I heard from Mary that there’s a stranger here, so I came to check it out."

After explaining his purpose, the broad-shouldered man carrying a large wicker basket cracked his neck—a sound akin to twisting a log as thick as Leon’s thigh. His scarred face, marked by burn wounds and knife scars, bore two deep-set hazel-green eyes that glared menacingly at Leon.

"..."

Does this look like someone with health issues?!

Feeling goosebumps rise under the intense stare of the massive old man, Leon couldn’t help but think: With his nearly six-and-a-half-foot frame and biceps bigger than Leon’s head, this guy could probably hunt bears in the wilderness armed with nothing but a fruit knife.

"This is Uncle John, Aunt Mary’s husband," the middle-aged man said with a smile, noticing Leon’s growing unease.

"Don’t worry. The way Uncle John is looking at you doesn’t mean he holds any grudges. Back when he served as a marine, he fought pirates and got injured by cannon fire, which left his face scarred and caused some lingering injuries. As a result, his facial muscles are stiff, and he can’t express much emotion.

“He handles maintenance work around the apartment—cleaning, gardening, fixing pipes and gas lines—with meticulous care and refuses payment. In summer, he even catches butterflies for the kids in the building. So don’t let his intimidating appearance fool you; he’s actually a very kind person."

Kind?! Why doesn’t he look kind to me?!

Leon swallowed hard as his gaze locked onto the hulking figure staring daggers at him. Subtly extending his index finger from behind the shopping bag, he tapped the black goat’s horn. Instantly, his soul vision flared to life.

FIRE! FLAMES! OVERWHELMING!

Before him stretched a crimson inferno filling the hallway, radiating waves of killing intent colder than polar ice. Sweat trickled down Leon’s spine as he instinctively took two steps backward, positioning himself firmly behind the protective barrier of the middle-aged couple.

Kind, my ass!

If it weren’t for the presence of this couple, Leon was certain that the moment would come where Uncle John reached for the oversized gardening shears tucked into his basket—and with one swift motion, transformed Leon from “Leon” into “Le/on”!
