Chapter 25: The Investigation Mission (Part 1)
Unaware that the chief was shamelessly trying to secure benefits for him, Leon stood a kilometer away from the middle-aged nurse's house, repeatedly "scanning" the souls of everyone within range with wary eyes, using the soul vision provided by the goat head.
Although his first mission after joining had gone smoothly—aside from a bruise on his shoulder from the recoil of a sniper rifle—he hadn’t even broken a sweat. However, Leon always remembered the conversation he had with the red-haired chief before starting and the alarming statistics shared during that talk.
The total mortality rate at the Cleansing Bureau was eight per thousand—and that was every month.
Both Emma, his senior colleague, and the red-haired chief had emphasized time and time again that no matter what situation arose, he must exercise extreme caution. The targets of the bureau’s missions were too varied; one might encounter something specifically designed to counter their abilities at any moment.
Even during the hospital incident, Emma, who possessed immortality, had suffered a setback. More than half her body had been swallowed into the hospital floor. Had it not been for the pre-arranged backup with him using the sniper with the help of the goat head, she would have been left waiting for the chief to rescue her.
What was even more chilling to contemplate was this: Such an event occurred only three streets away from the bureau this time, so Emma could still wait for the chief to save her. But what if it happened in some remote, uninhabited mountain forest? Or if the Red Brick Road Hospital could move, making its location uncertain?
Even with her immortality, she wouldn’t die, but she could be trapped for months, years, or even indefinitely, conscious yet unable to move, encased in concrete—a fate far worse than death.
Exhaling deeply, Leon reminded himself once again: caution, caution, and more caution!
After reflecting on the previous mission, Leon took two deep breaths and repeatedly admonished himself. Even seemingly harmless situations could be linked to "anomalies," and he must remain vigilant.
Though he possessed a unique badge advantage that promised continuous growth, his current survival skills were nowhere near those of Emma. Yet, even she had faltered. How could he afford to be anything less than doubly cautious?
...
After meticulously confirming the soul states of everyone nearby, especially the middle-aged nurse’s family, ensuring their emotions were stable and showing no signs of anomalies, Leon stuffed the grumbling goat head into a shopping bag and briskly headed toward the block where the nurse's family lived.
Upon showing the apartment manager his credentials from the Cleansing Bureau, identifying himself as a public official investigating the corruption of the hospital chief, Leon easily gained the manager’s trust. The manager, a kind elderly woman, even set aside her half-finished knitting project to personally escort him upstairs.
“Officer, Hanna and her husband are all good people. Though she works at the Red Brick Road Hospital, she has nothing to do with that money-grubbing director. Please don't wrongfully arrest her.”
The sixty-something-year-old manager slowly climbed the stairs with Leon, chattering nonstop: “I remember over twenty years ago, when she was just a young girl, she already worked as a nurse there and has always been diligent without any issues. When my husband broke his leg and stayed in the hospital for half a month, she took care of him so well, even better than our own daughter.
“The only issue with her is that she’s a bit straightforward. By seniority, she should have become head nurse ten years ago, but because she refused to falsify records like the others, she never got promoted…”
After a long-winded monologue, the manager quietly bypassed the fifth floor where the middle-aged nurse lived and led Leon to the sixth floor, which was entirely vacant. She sneakily glanced at his expression and cautiously asked:
“By the way, officer, are you here to ask Hanna to testify about the corruption at the hospital, or are you taking her in for questioning?”
“…”
So, if I said I was here to arrest her, you’d probably pick any empty room on the sixth floor, knock loudly for a while, and then tell me she isn’t home, right?
Somewhat exasperated, Leon paused on the fifth floor and gently reminded her: “Ma’am… her place is on the fifth floor, isn’t it? Did you accidentally go up one extra floor?”
“Oh? Oh! My apologies, my memory isn’t what it used to be, hahaha.” The manager maintained her composure even after being caught. Slowly descending the stairs, she still didn’t lead Leon to the middle-aged nurse’s home but instead headed toward another empty unit on the left side of the staircase.
“…”
C’mon… I already know her place is on the fifth floor, and you’re still trying to lead me elsewhere? This is getting ridiculous.
“Tsk…”
This little watchdog is pretty sharp! He must have done his homework before coming here!
Seeing that Leon wasn’t falling for it and was now standing right outside Hanna’s door, the manager’s eyelids and mouth corners drooped simultaneously. With somewhat bow-legged steps, she stomped back, angrily knocking on the door of the middle-aged nurse’s apartment and threatening with a darkened face:
“I’m warning you, conduct your investigation properly and don’t try to slander Hanna. She has nothing to do with the hospital’s dirty affairs!
“And, if Hanna comes back injured or in an abnormal state, I will definitely file a complaint and testify against your department for illegal interrogation!”
“…”
Under the watchful, suspicious gaze of the manager, the door to the middle-aged nurse’s apartment creaked open from inside, revealing a weary-looking middle-aged man.
Upon seeing the somewhat unfamiliar Leon, the scholarly man adjusted his glasses and asked in surprise: “Uh? How can I help?”
“He’s…”
“I’m looking for your wife, Mrs. Hanna.” Interrupting the manager mid-sentence, Leon quickly explained: “My name is Leon. Your wife was the nurse in charge of my sister’s ward. Has she mentioned anything about it?”
“Oh! Yes, yes! She did mention it!” Hearing Leon’s words, the weary man’s face lit up with joy. He quickly opened the door and rushed over, grabbing Leon’s hand and shaking it vigorously.
“Thank goodness you and your colleagues arrived in time yesterday to shut off the gas valve at the hospital! And if it weren’t for your sister noticing something amiss and having Hanna slide down using the bedsheets, she might have…
“Oh dear! I really don’t know how to thank your family enough! We should have visited you, but here you are, visiting us first!”
“You’re too kind. My sister received much care from your wife. Yesterday, she merely suggested tying the curtains together. Their safety is largely thanks to your wife.”
“No, no, it’s all thanks to your sister…”
???
Watching the two men at the door, enthusiastically shaking hands and thanking each other’s families in perfect harmony, the manager, who had been watching vigilantly, was left utterly dumbfounded.
Wait… wait a minute… let me gather my thoughts first…
