Chapter 38: The Streamer Is Alive!

If it weren’t for the worldview he’d built over two decades, Gu Lang might have started to wonder if Rosette was actually a dog wearing a leopard’s skin.

Was there really such an obedient feline? Lie down when told to lie down, move when told to move—had she grown up in a circus with dogs?

Gu Lang absentmindedly rested his hand on his chin, stroking the stubble that had grown long, and glanced at Rosette’s slightly swaying tail. “Come to think of it, it’s not entirely impossible…”

At this moment, inside Gu Lang’s livestream room…

After two days of a black screen, fewer than 1,000 viewers remained in the chat.

After all, whether they were die-hard fans or not, staring at a blank screen all day guessing what might happen was a waste of time. One of the main reasons the internet had developed so rapidly in such a short period was its privacy and immediacy.

Want to curse someone out? Go ahead—they’ll never know who you are.

Thus, internet addiction wasn’t limited by age or social class. Many things people couldn’t or wouldn’t dare do in real life could be achieved online, providing some form of catharsis.

However, as the internet became more regulated and transparent, it evolved from its initial chaotic state into a clearly segmented lifestyle—but its essence hadn’t changed.

Who could say that the 1,000 viewers still lingering in Gu Lang’s livestream were all genuine fans and not just rubberneckers? After all, the rumor that “Douyu streamer possibly killed in Africa” had already spread like wildfire. If Douyu hadn’t been so desperate to avoid taking the blame for the incident, they would’ve released Gu Lang’s information long ago, and Third Brother Gu might have already been fully exposed.

Sometimes, the allure of the internet lies precisely in this: once you’re exposed online, even details like the pattern of your childhood bedwetting—details you yourself might not remember, and your parents might not recall—the omnipotent netizens will dig them up for you. They might even piece together a nine-grid collage.

So at this moment, quite a few nosy internet news reporters had gathered in the livestream room, ostensibly concerned about the streamer but secretly hoping to uncover dirt on Douyu.

Meanwhile, the videos of “Buzz-Cut Bro vs. Hyena Pack” previously saved by netizens and Douyu had once again gone viral online. Many people, upon hearing about Gu Lang’s disappearance, had revisited the footage to see the last thing the streamer had filmed before vanishing.

At the same time, back in China…

It was nearing noon in Hangzhou’s Lin’an District Police Station. In the reception hall, a middle-aged couple was supporting a woman in her sixties. Their faces were filled with worry as they questioned a young police officer.

“Officer, is there still no news about my grandson?” The elderly woman clutched the young officer’s hand, her voice trembling with worry and desperation.

“Ma’am, please don’t worry. Our embassy has already organized a rescue team to search for him. As soon as there’s any news, we’ll inform you immediately,” the officer said patiently. He gently guided the elderly woman toward a nearby chair, helping her sit down.

“How can I not worry?!” The grandmother’s face was filled with regret as she stamped her feet in frustration.

“It’s all my fault for spoiling him! When he said he wanted to go to Africa, I thought, ‘He’s an adult now; let him explore the world.’ Who could’ve imagined…”

The couple accompanying her had initially wanted to console her, but the words died on their lips. After all, the missing person was their son. They now understood how cruel they had been in the past when mocking parents who lost their children.

Just then, from another part of the office, someone called out to the officer who was comforting the grandmother. The caller’s face was full of shock, as though he’d seen a ghost.

By this point, news of the sudden reappearance of Douyu streamer Gu Lang, who had gone missing for nearly three days in the South African savanna, had already spread across the web. Meanwhile, Gu Lang’s livestream room was exploding with activity, filled with chaotic comments from viewers.

“I knew it—another shameless publicity stunt.”

“Congrats, the streamer is back from the dead!”

“IllegalAccount gifted 5 rockets…”

“SnarkyBye gifted 1 Super Rocket…”

“I just got the notification—am I late?”

“Did the streamer escape from being sold into mining slavery?”

“What exactly happened?”

“Where’s the leopard? Where’s Buzz-Cut Bro?”

“Same question—I want to see Big Brother Buzz-Cut!”

“Big Brother Buzz-Cut +1!”

“Quick, notify the moderators!”

“Trash Douyu, shameless clickbait!”

“How much did the streamer pay for these fake viewers?”

Gu Lang stared blankly at his livestream room, which had never been this lively, and at the soaring popularity meter in the upper right corner. He suddenly felt as though he’d wandered into the wrong room.

“Is this really my livestream? What’s with all these comments?”

Ever since meeting Wang Ping, the tablet’s screen in the car had been broken, and with no way to replace it, Gu Lang had no idea what kind of impact his two-day blackout had caused.

Especially when he saw the Super Rockets flashing across the screen, he felt like he was floating on air.

Am I considered a big-time streamer now?

Originally, he had planned to wait until his viewership grew a bit more before addressing the elephant poaching issue, but now he decided to strike while the iron was hot.

“Hello everyone, my name is Gu Lang, and I’m an outdoor streamer.”

This weak opening line earned him silent disdain from Wang Ping, who was hiding nearby, clinging to Rosette and refusing to appear on camera.

“A small accident happened a couple of days ago—I caught a fever! Plus, there were some technical issues that interrupted the stream. I apologize for making everyone worry.”

As Gu Lang spoke, he began switching the camera angle, eager to change the subject. Explaining the fever incident was tricky—it involved Wang Ping and raised too many unanswered questions. But since he was alive and well, Gu Lang figured the details didn’t matter.

Unfortunately for him, he had no idea that during his unconsciousness, Wang Ping had driven his SUV through Makuyuni, where a bullet fired by a security guard was still lodged in the backseat. Without explaining this, Gu Lang wouldn’t be able to return home unscathed.

Switching the camera to rear view, Gu Lang crouched behind a cluster of trees near the edge of the forest, aiming the lens at the herd of elephants gathering in the distance.

“My current location is the Serengeti Plain in Tanzania, and directly ahead is the famous Ngorongoro Volcano.”

Of course, this geographical information wasn’t pulled out of thin air. Before going live, Gu Lang had checked the map to confirm his coordinates. It wasn’t just for rescue purposes—it was also to inform everyone of the location of the elephant massacre.

However, despite his apparent cleverness, Gu Lang failed to notice one crucial detail: before waking up, he had been camping on the Maasai Mara plains. The nearest edge of the Maasai Mara to Ngorongoro was over 50 kilometers away. Yet, relying solely on the map, Gu Lang convinced himself he hadn’t traveled far.

On the map, after all, the distance looked negligible—less than two centimeters.

“As you can see, there’s a large herd of elephants nearby. Unfortunately, I must inform you that last night, they encountered poachers. Two elephants were killed.”

As Gu Lang explained, he frowned at the barrage of comments scrolling across the screen.

Seeing the camera shift to focus on the elephants, Wang Ping curiously peeked over to assess Gu Lang’s skills as an outdoor streamer.

Meanwhile, back in Hangzhou…

The officer operated the computer, allowing the grandmother, her daughter, and son-in-law to watch the livestream. Behind them, a few curious officers also gathered around to observe.

“Why are words constantly flashing on the screen?” the grandmother asked curiously.

“Ma’am, those are messages from netizens talking to your grandson,” the officer explained.

“Oh, so they can talk to him?” the grandmother asked.

“Yes, if you’d like to say something, I can type it for you,” the officer replied with a smile.

BANG! The grandmother suddenly slammed the table, startling everyone around her.

“You type this!” she declared fiercely. “Tell him, ‘Gu Lang, you little brat, get your ass back here right now!’”
