Chapter 13: A Sudden Turn of Events
Having obtained a new badge, Leon, after parting ways with the bandaged woman, wasted no time. He swiftly charged into the shopping mall diagonally across from the hospital, carrying his "sniper rifle" and heading straight to his chosen vantage point. However, across the street, the Red Brick Road Hospital had already descended into a hellish nightmare.
The first-floor lobby, once bustling with activity, had now become a scene of horror, with most people consumed by the icy tiles beneath them. The weakened patients, utterly powerless to escape, could only stretch their arms upward in a desperate plea for help.
From a distance, the entire lobby looked as if it were a pool of concrete, mixing with countless individuals struggling in despair. Everywhere, arms stretched upward, some high, others low, desperately grasping at nothing. It was like a living painting of hell.
On the fourth floor, the situation was slightly better in the intensive care units. Thanks to the carpeting, the patients there had not yet been swallowed by the tiles.
But outside in the corridor, the sight was utterly grim. Neither patients nor nurses dared step out of the “safe zone” provided by the carpet. They knew that if they ventured beyond it, they would end up like the others in the hallway—sinking into the floor, buried alive by the tiles.
We can't stay here!
Watching as the patients in the corridor sank deeper and deeper, the older nurse looked around anxiously. Her eyes lit up when she saw the windows.
“The windows! We can escape through the windows!”
“Yes! We can jump!” The young nurse with torn skin on her right hand shuddered after hearing this, as if suddenly infused with newfound strength. She rose from the carpet, her expression frantic. “It’s only the fourth floor! If we’re lucky, jumping down might not kill us!”
“Wait… cough, cough! Wait!” Before she could act, Anna, lying on the hospital bed, struggled to sit up and interrupted weakly.
“The bedsheets, curtains… cough, cough… and the fabric from the sofa! If we tie them together and secure them somewhere…”
Then we can climb down safely!
“I’ll do it!” Understanding Anna’s suggestion, the young nurse's face lit up with hope. Ignoring the pain in her injured hand, she tore down the curtains in two quick motions and rushed to Anna’s bedside. Without a word, she dragged the still-coughing girl off the bed.
“What are you doing?!” The older nurse quickly caught Anna, who nearly fell, and glared at the young nurse with anger.
“She’s still sick! And if she hadn’t stopped you earlier, you would’ve jumped already!”
“I… I just want to get everyone out faster!”
Realizing she might have gone a bit too far, the young nurse looked panicked. The bizarre situation outside had clearly rattled her. As she tied the blood-stained bedsheets to the curtains with trembling hands, she stammered:
“I’m getting married next month! I don’t want to die! This is too… terrifying! This must be the work of demons! I don't want to die here!”
“Wait! Don’t go down yet!”
Noticing the young nurse tying one end of the makeshift “rope” to a wall-mounted cabinet and preparing to climb out the window, the older nurse shouted in alarm:
“There’s still a patient! This girl is too weak to hold onto the curtains! We need to get her down first!”
“I don’t care… I mean, no!”
Caught in the older nurse’s stern gaze, the young nurse seemed to realize that if she escaped first, those left behind could easily untie the “escape rope.” Her panicked face shifted to a forced smile as she stammered an excuse:
“I-I mean, my hand hurts. I’m afraid I won’t be able to hold onto her… Here’s what I’ll do! Once I’m outside, I’ll find help immediately and come back to save you!”
Before anyone could react, the young nurse grabbed the blood-stained curtains and clambered out the window. She quickly began climbing down, leaving the others behind.
“…”
This bitch!
Watching her colleague abandon them without hesitation, the older nurse clenched her teeth and cursed silently. Supporting the still-coughing Anna, she led the girl to the window, speaking gently:
“It’s okay. Listen, I’ll tie the curtains around your waist and lower you down little by little. Try to hold onto anything that sticks out from the wall. Be careful not to…”
“Ahhh!!!”
A sudden, panicked scream from outside interrupted her instructions. Startled, the older nurse looked out the window and was horrified to see the young nurse stuck on the second-floor exterior wall.
No, she wasn’t just stuck. Like the patients in the hallway, she was being swallowed—this time by the hospital’s outer wall.
“Help me! Please, help me!”
How am I supposed to save you? Last time, I could still pull you back, but this time… there’s nothing I can do.
Looking at her terrified colleague, the older nurse let out a long sigh, her eyes clouding with despair.
If the hospital walls could “eat” people, then this escape route was blocked too. Were they really going to have to jump? Even if she were willing to take the risk and test her luck, what about the sick girl beside her?
---
“Knock, knock, knock.”
Just as the two women were at their wits’ end, a knock came from the glass door of the special care unit.
“You must be Anna.” The bandaged woman entered after checking the room number. Locking her gaze on the sickly girl, she walked straight over and said concisely: “I’m a colleague of your brother. I’m here to save you.”
Brother?!
Anna’s anxious expression softened. If this woman had come to rescue her, it meant her brother was safe. But… why was her brother’s colleague dressed so strangely?
Examining the tall woman wrapped in bandages and wearing a strange mask, Anna clutched the older nurse’s hand and hesitantly asked: “Um… miss, could you please save her too? She’s been taking care of me all this time…”
“Sure.” The bandaged woman glanced at the hopeful older nurse and nodded without hesitation. She led the two of them to the window and then…
“Hmm?” She noticed the young nurse outside, half-absorbed by the wall, and frowned. Turning back, she asked: “She’s with you? Do you want me to save her too?”
Hearing this, the trapped young nurse’s face lit up. Pleading desperately, she cried: “Yes! Yes! We’re together! Please, help me! Please say something for me!”
Looking at the pleading gaze of the young nurse, the older nurse, who had been filled with frustration just moments ago, sighed. She was about to say something when she suddenly felt her hand being gripped tightly.
“No!” To the older nurse’s surprise, the usually kind-hearted Anna shook her head decisively.
“She tried to abandon us. If saving her isn’t too dangerous, then please do so. But if it’s risky, forget about her. Just save the kind nurse next to me.”
“Got it.” Glancing at the young girl who, even in the face of the bizarre and sudden crisis, remained calm, composed, and clear-headed, the bandaged woman smiled and nodded. Then, she pulled over the curtain hanging by the window, tied it securely around the older nurse, and firmly gripped the windowsill before extending her arm out of the window.
Under the shocked gazes of the three women, the mysterious bandaged woman, with strength that seemed almost inhuman, managed to "lower" the older nurse straight down, relying purely on raw arm strength, without even letting her touch the outer wall.
After glancing back at the situation inside the room, the bandaged woman unwrapped the bandages from her wrist, secured the medicine from the bedside table, tied it together with the IV stand, and carried it—along with the wide-eyed and astonished Anna—out through the window.
“Go find your brother.” As Anna descended, the bandaged woman leaned out and reassured her: “He’s safe, right across…”
“Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!”
Four deafening explosions interrupted her words. Inside the room, the cabinet tied to the rope trembled violently as its four wall bolts shot loose.
With a scream from the older nurse below, Anna plummeted toward the ground, and the massive metal cabinet followed the rope, hurtling straight toward the bandaged woman’s back!
