Chapter 12: Isn’t Your Style a Bit Off?

When something happened at Red Brick Road Hospital and it began to slowly consume the patients, Leon, who had just rushed to the vicinity, suddenly felt a sharp pain in his eyes. In that instant, he discovered that the entire world before him had turned black.

“Wait! Don’t go in yet!”

“What’s wrong?” The bandaged woman, whose arm Leon had grabbed, turned back in confusion and froze, stunned by what she saw. Both Leon and the black goat in his arms had their eyes tightly shut, as if blinded by a searing light, with tears streaming down Leon's face.

“This hospital is alive!” Gazing at the black flames soaring into the sky within his Soul Vision, Leon, whose "eyes" were scorched by the fiery light, endured the burning pain and held onto the woman’s arm to explain:

“Just now, the moment you were about to step in, it seemed to have received some kind of signal. It suddenly gained a soul—an immensely powerful one, probably as strong as several hundred ordinary souls combined!”

The entire hospital?

After hearing Leon’s words, the bandaged woman nodded, signaling that she understood. Her eyes, hidden beneath her mask, narrowed slightly as she quickly analyzed the situation.

If a hospital suddenly gained a soul, the most likely explanations would be that an anomaly had attached itself to the building, that the out-of-control Contaminated Individual was  able to manipulate the structure, or that the hospital had been temporarily severed from the world, no longer bound by the laws of reality.

The first possibility seemed unlikely—it wouldn’t explain the precision of the hospital activating just as she was about to step in. The third possibility, while plausible, would require immense power and the ability to breach the dimensional framework of the world. If the strength was only equivalent to several hundred souls, it wouldn’t be enough for such a feat.

That left the second explanation. Most likely, the ability of the out-of-control Contaminated Individual was tied to structures, or even required structures as a medium.

“You don’t need to go in. Just assist me from the outside!”

After pondering at the hospital’s entrance for a moment, the bandaged woman crouched down and opened her suitcase. From the bottom, she took out several matte metal components and began to assemble them with practiced ease.

As the object gradually took shape, Leon was surprised to find that it looked… strangely familiar.

A long brass barrel lined with spiral grooves, a firing assembly made up of a mechanical chamber, recoil spring, locking mechanism, and trigger system, a tripod mounted beneath the barrel, a stock shaped to fit a shoulder’s curve, and a monocular scope mounted on top of the barrel...

Wait a second—Is this what I think it is?!

I thought you’d charge in with a Bible in one hand and a warhammer in the other, chanting incantations to purify the anomaly with mystical tools. And yet… you’re giving me a sniper rifle instead?!

As Leon stood dumbfounded, the bandaged woman completed assembling the weapon. She then pulled out three small silver canisters from the bottom of her suitcase, clicked one of them onto the brass barrel, and opened a compartment that appeared to be the "magazine,” showing Leon the shiny white metal spikes inside.

“This is a portable nail gun that the chief got from the military. It uses single-use gas canisters to provide firing power. Its range and force are much weaker than standard models—about 500 meters—but it’s still strong enough to penetrate the hospital’s outer walls and kill the target directly.”

As she spoke, she handed the other two gas canisters to Leon, her expression serious as she gave clear instructions:

“I’m going inside to find the out-of-control Contaminated Individual and see if I can take it out directly. If I fail, I’ll do my best to keep it engaged up close. If that happens, don’t hesitate—just shoot!

“Also, while there are plenty of nails left in the gun, there are only three gas canisters, which means you only have three chances. If you miss all three shots, you must retreat immediately and run back to the Cleansing Bureau to wait for the chief return. Got it?”

“…”

I got it… but don’t you trust me a bit too much?

Looking at the bizarrely designed brass "sniper rifle" on the ground, Leon felt a bit overwhelmed.

Although I played plenty of Pubg in my past life, that was with a keyboard and mouse! I’ve never touched one of these in real life. It’d be a miracle if I can even fire the thing properly, let alone hit something during your close combat...

Honestly, I’m scared I might shoot the wrong person and take you out instead.

“You don’t need to worry about injuring me.” Noticing Leon’s hesitation, the bandaged woman gently reassured him:

“If I’m letting you take the shot, it’s because I’m confident I won’t get hurt. I’ve already adjusted the scope and sights for you. As for the operation, I’ll explain it step by step…”

“Actually, I might know a little about how to operate it…”

Recalling scenes from films he’d watched in his past life, Leon said uncertainly: “Find a good vantage point, lie prone with legs apart, keep my body close to the ground, brace the stock against my shoulder, and line up the scope, muzzle, and target in a straight line?”

“Huh?” Hearing this, the bandaged woman raised her eyebrows in surprise. “Prone firing technique? Do you have a military background?”

“Uh… sort of?”

Leon’s eyes flickered as he made up a vague answer: “My parents were mechanics under the military before they passed. They taught me a bit about this stuff… just a little.”

I see… The bandaged woman nodded in understanding, not doubting the source of his knowledge. However, she quickly shook her head:

“Your explanation isn’t wrong, but it applies to medium-range rapid-fire firearms. Those weapons have shorter ranges and scopes aligned with the barrel, so a straight-line approach works for aiming.

“But this one is different. Look closely—the scope is higher than the barrel. If you use the same straight-line rule, the nail’s trajectory will fall short of the target.”

Pointing at the scope mounted above the barrel, the bandaged woman traced an imaginary slanted line between the scope and muzzle, then explained to the now-enlightened Leon: “When the nail is fired, its trajectory isn’t a straight line—it dips slightly. To use this kind of mid-to-long-range precision weapon, you need to understand the nail’s flight path, calculate the drop point, and use the reticle to adjust your aim accordingly…”

Buzz!

[Through Emma Allman’s thorough and patient guidance, you’ve successfully activated the Black Iron Badge “Shooting Rookie.”

[Shooting Rookie: A novice shooter with minimal training and abysmal accuracy.

[Equipping Effect: Although you’ve only received basic training, you’re significantly better than an untrained individual. When consciously adjusting your aim, your shooting precision will receive a slight boost.

[Upgrade Path: After completing 200 live-fire exercises or 1,000 simulated shots, this badge will automatically upgrade to the Bronze Badge "Marksman.". Current progress: 0/200, 0/1000.

[Hidden Attribute:None.]

Buzz!

[Through self-learning and analysis, you’ve gained rudimentary firearm shooting skills. The Anomalous-colored Badge “Materialist Soul (Crimson)” has been activated.

[Your understanding of firearm shooting is classified as "low," but due to your ability to think critically, analyze, and self-adjust, every time you miss a shot at the same target, your chances of hitting it on the next attempt will slightly increase.]
