Chapter 26: Wang Ping in Action

After feeding Gu Lang some water from a bottle with a small hole, Wang Ping returned to the campfire and began working on the thorn branches he had brought back.

The only driver who could start the vehicle, as far as Wang Ping could think, was himself. Although his legs were only about 20 centimeters long, Wang Ping had never truly viewed himself as an animal. As long as his mind stayed sharp, solutions would always outnumber the problems. But before getting to that, some preparations had to be made.

He first selected the three thickest main thorn branches, using his claws to shave off the thorns and make the sticks relatively smooth. After gauging the distance between the pedals and the seat inside the vehicle, Wang Ping broke the three branches to about a meter in length and slowly made small holes at one end using his claws.

The metal wire that had been snapped by Wang Ping earlier in the vehicle now seemed useless, so he simply dismantled the whole thing and used it as rope. He cut the wire into three segments, passed them through the small holes in the thorn branches, and dragged the bare sticks into the driver's seat, wrapping one end of the wire around the gas pedal, brake, and clutch.

Because his claws weren’t very dexterous and the metal wire was too soft, it was hard to tie things securely. Wang Ping decided to wrap the rope several times around each stick and "use both claws and mouth" to make a makeshift knot.

After tying everything, Wang Ping placed his claws on the steering wheel and tested it briefly. Though it could more or less achieve the desired effect, it was still quite troublesome. The steering wheel was too large for him. If there were a sharp turn, his small arms would get tangled. Also, since the sticks were only tied at one end, they had enough flexibility but would easily fall over to the other side. The main issue, however, was that the length of the sticks was hard to control, and his back claws often missed the pedals. If he stepped too firmly, the thorns would stab painfully into the pads of his feet.

Wang Ping tried to move around like he was on stilts for a few minutes, before collapsing into the seat, deep in thought.

Driving this way would definitely not work. A sudden turn would either send the sticks flying or send Wang Ping flying himself.

He stared at the steering wheel for a while before slapping his head in frustration. How foolish he was to keep thinking from a human perspective. Who said that the gas pedal and brake had to be operated by feet? Had he never played arcade games?

He adjusted the position of the sticks again, this time threading the ones attached to the gas and brake pedals through the gap in the steering wheel to create two makeshift control levers. This way, they wouldn’t easily topple over. As for the operation, Wang Ping could use his front claws to control them.

He tossed the stick on the clutch aside. It was something that wouldn't be needed once the vehicle was moving, and if it fell, it wouldn't matter. After all, there wouldn’t be any traffic on the savanna.

Wang Ping had worried about whether the thorn branches would be too unsteady to control the gas and brake pedals. He had originally planned to use his back claws to step on them, extending the pedals, but now, seeing the makeshift control levers, he felt a lot more confident. It was definitely more reliable than using his claws to press them.

The remaining challenge was how to get Gu Lang into the vehicle.

The tent and sleeping bag were no longer a concern. Wang Ping had no intention of packing them up for him. He would just leave Gu Lang on the back seat of the car.

Wang Ping tried to see if the back seats could fold down, but after searching for a while, he found no switches. He moved the front passenger seat back as much as possible to prevent Gu Lang from falling to the floor during the rough ride and to give Rosette, who was about to be moved to the front, some more space.

Apart from adjusting the seat, the rest of the work could only be done with Rosette’s help.

"Hopefully this guy is tough enough to make it to the camp!"

In the distance, the horizon had quietly brightened with the first light of dawn. Before he knew it, the night had passed with a busy rush.

Wang Ping decided not to wait for daylight. For him and Rosette, traveling at night was no different from traveling during the day. There was no need to turn on the headlights—it was both energy-efficient and helped avoid drawing unwanted attention.

Waking up Rosette, Wang Ping led it to the entrance of Gu Lang's tent, ready to get him into the vehicle.

Over the course of the night, Gu Lang seemed to have regained some strength. When Wang Ping used his nose to check his temperature, he found it wasn’t as feverish as before. However, Gu Lang’s consciousness was still not fully awake. He opened his eyes briefly, glanced up at the two figures above him, then fell back into a deep sleep.

At that moment, Gu Lang was probably in a semi-comatose state. His soul screamed to wake up, but his body and mind firmly resisted.

Last night, Wang Ping had fed him some willow sap three times, though he hadn’t been able to get the now-cold fawn leg into Gu Lang’s mouth. Wang Ping had considered chewing it up and feeding him, but the thought alone disgusted him. He decided to wait a bit longer—maybe Gu Lang would wake up during the day.

After about half an hour, Wang Ping finally managed to get Rosette to understand that its job was to drag Gu Lang’s clothes and move him to the vehicle, not to treat him like breakfast.

The process was far from gentle.

There were countless small stones, dried grass stalks, broken branches, and possibly some crushed bones or bugs between the tent and the vehicle, a distance of about three meters. Wang Ping chose to ignore the tearing sounds from Gu Lang’s clothes as he was dragged along.

If Gu Lang woke up later and asked about the bruises and blood stains on his body, Wang Ping wasn’t sure how he’d explain.

Fortunately, he didn’t actually need to explain anything. And with the first aid kit in the vehicle, any bruises were no cause for concern.

It took Rosette only ten minutes to drag Gu Lang into the vehicle, and another half hour for Wang Ping to tend to the scratches and bruises caused by the dragging. By the time everything was ready, the smell of disinfectant filled the vehicle.

After dousing the campfire embers with water, Wang Ping took Rosette to press down the rear cover of the vehicle. The makeshift team was ready to set off.

Gu Lang, in a “shrimp pose,” lay on the back seat, holding the roasted fawn leg Wang Ping had retrieved from the tent. Rosette sat in the front passenger seat, curiously watching Wang Ping, occasionally peering at Gu Lang, then sneezing from the disinfectant.

Taking a deep breath, Wang Ping flexed his claws, pressed the lever on the clutch, and turned the key to the right.

"Vroom~~~"

The engine roared to life, and the vehicle started.

"Haha! I knew it would work! Let’s go!"

Wang Ping felt a surge of joy, and at the same time, the sense of loss from being transformed into an animal began to fade. He slowly released the clutch lever, then pressed down on the gas lever with his right claw.

"Vroom vroom vroom!!!~~~"

The engine roared louder, but the vehicle didn’t move.

After a few moments of confusion, Wang Ping instinctively looked to the left.

"Oh shit! I forgot to shift gears!"

The only one in the vehicle who noticed the awkwardness was Wang Ping. Luckily, Gu Lang was still semi-conscious, so he didn’t have to worry about him mocking the situation.

After shifting gears and releasing the clutch again, the vehicle rocked slightly and slowly began to move forward.

Wang Ping adjusted the steering wheel’s position, breathed a sigh of relief, and started trying to shift up and accelerate.

At that moment, behind the car, the rising sun slowly emerged from the earth, sending a golden beam through the rear window and casting Wang Ping's long shadow in front of the driver’s seat.

It might have been a trick of the light, but looking at the shadow of his hands turning the wheel, Wang Ping was briefly lost in thought. He suddenly remembered driving this way, on a savanna like this. At that moment, looking at the steering wheel, Wang Ping felt a sense of unreality.

“If this is a dream…” Wang Ping steadied himself. “Then let me finish saving that guy first before waking up!”
