Chapter 42: Sudden Change

“WiFi? Are you still half-asleep?”

The man called Tuka was a middle-aged man wearing a military-green baseball cap and a scruffy mustache. Like the others, he wore khaki combat gear. Unlike the young, game-obsessed fool before him, Tuka was an experienced hunter who had spent years navigating the jungle. His marksmanship, physical prowess, and sharp eyesight were unmatched.

However, in recent years, the expanding no-hunting zones and growing lists of protected species in Tanzania had left hunters like him with little room to survive. After being lured by outsiders’ promises and bolstered by his misplaced confidence in his skills, Tuka eventually turned to poaching.

As Marx once said, if there’s a 50% profit margin, capital will take risks; at 100%, it will trample all human laws. And the profits from poaching ivory far exceeded 100%. Just a few successful attempts, and the cold hard cash—American dollars—had driven Tuka, a former hunter who once held some reverence for nature, into a frenzy.

This time, their group consisted of five men. The young black man who first spoke was named Adit, whose name sounded suspiciously like “idiot” in English. Then there was Tuka, the seasoned hunter, along with a scar-faced black man whose demeanor radiated authority, and two white men.

Upon hearing the exchange between Adit and Tuka, the two white men burst into laughter, speaking rapidly in a foreign tongue that no one else understood. Their mocking grins made it clear they weren’t from English-speaking countries. Meanwhile, Scarface sat on the pickup truck, idly twirling a dagger, his expression unreadable.

Though the group appeared united, it was obvious they were divided into three smaller factions. Among them, Scarface’s presence dominated the rest.

Behind the volcanic rock formation stood a canvas tent, evidence that this team had taken refuge here after poaching the lone female elephant the previous night.

Mocked by the others, Adit’s face flushed with embarrassment. He let out a cold snort and stood up abruptly.

“Adit!” Tuka grabbed his arm, signaling him to calm down.

“Wow, wow! The boy scout’s getting angry!” one of the white men teased, laughing even harder.

“Fuck! Who are you calling a boy scout? Come fight me!” Adit shouted, shrugging off Tuka’s restraint as he pointed at the white man.

“I’ll fucking kill you, you understand!” The white man, nearly six feet tall, glared menacingly at the wiry Adit, his freckled face contorted with rage.

“Enough!” Scarface finally spoke, his voice cutting through the tension like a blade. He stepped forward, stopping the impending fight, and approached Adit.

Adit instinctively took a step back, intimidated by Scarface’s imposing aura.

“Hand it over,” Scarface demanded, holding out his hand.

“Uh, boss, this is my new phone—you…” Before Adit could finish, Scarface snatched the phone from him.

After tapping the screen a few times, Scarface raised his head, his expression darkening.

The freckled man leaned in curiously, only to burst into laughter when he saw the screen.

“So you’re a country bumpkin after all—where do you see any WiFi?”

“What?” Adit froze, quickly grabbing the phone back. He stared at the empty network list, utterly baffled.

“But it was just there…” Muttering under his breath, Adit turned and walked a few steps away. Suddenly, the phone vibrated, and a faint wireless signal appeared on the blank list.

“See? I told you! How could there be no signal?” Adit proudly held up the phone, triumphant.

“Seriously?” The freckled man looked stunned, as if he’d seen a ghost.

Scarface strode over, casually taking the phone again. His gaze narrowed as he stared at the WiFi signal labeled “HandsomeGuLang.” It was coming from the direction they had fled the previous night.

“Damn it! Someone’s tracking us!” Scarface growled, tossing the phone to the ground and stomping on it.

“No!... My brand-new Huawei phone!” Adit cried out in anguish.

“You really live up to your name!” Scarface sneered at Adit. “A phone like that can be traced. Don’t use it again.”

“Hey, Boss, what about the tracker?” At this point, the other silent white man stepped forward.

Scarface turned southeast, listening intently. Faint trumpeting sounds from the elephant herd could still be heard in the distance. A moment later, rain began to fall, chilling the air.

After a brief silence, Scarface spoke in a low, steely voice: “Kill him. Then dig out the bullet and throw it into the elephant herd. No one will ever find out.”

“What… You want to kill someone too?” Tuka hesitated, his face uneasy.

“Hmph! If you don’t like it, you can leave right now!” Scarface snapped.

The freckled man and his companion exchanged cold smirks, their gazes locking onto Tuka.

The rain grew heavier.

By now, Gu Lang’s head and clothes were soaked, though the tree offered some shelter, sparing him from becoming completely drenched. Below, the elephants continued covering their fallen companions with branches and debris despite the downpour. The blood-soaked ground was gradually transforming into a massive grave.

The rain blurred the live stream’s visuals, shrouding the scene in a foggy haze.

Gu Lang, however, had somewhat calmed down. He began educating his viewers about the origins of African elephants, the differences between savanna and forest elephants, and the history of South Africa’s ivory trade—all hastily researched online.

Few could imagine that ivory had initially been sold internationally as material for handicrafts, priced cheaply by weight.

“I know everyone’s heard the phrase ‘no buying, no killing’. Honestly, I used to think it was meaningless too. But today, facing this tragic scene, I truly understand its weight.” Gu Lang spoke casually, rambling without much structure. Predictably, not everyone agreed with him. Some accused him of being sanctimonious, while others defended him, sparking heated arguments in the chat.

But Gu Lang hadn’t opened the live comments, whether out of forgetfulness or fear of Wang Ping seeing them.

Wang Ping, meanwhile, was feeling miserable—not emotionally, but physically.

He was hungry.

After his breakfast escaped back to the river earlier with Gu Lang’s help, Wang Ping had gone another half-day without food. Even with his robust physique, hunger was taking its toll. Watching the female elephant’s body being completely buried and the rain washing away all traces of the poachers, Wang Ping thought, Maybe it’s time to eat.

Just then, Rosette behind him suddenly turned her head toward the north, her body tensing.

“Hmm?” Wang Ping found Rosette’s reaction strange and followed her gaze. To the north lay dense forest, obscured by sheets of rain. Yet Wang Ping couldn’t shake an ominous feeling.

It wasn’t just the north. He sensed hostility emanating from all directions, as if unseen eyes were watching them.

After pondering for a moment, Wang Ping climbed along the branches toward Gu Lang, hoping to get a better view from his side.

Hearing the rustling of branches, Gu Lang reflexively turned his head.

BANG!

The trunk beside him exploded, showering splinters and bark across his cheek. A sudden gust of wind whipped past his ear, followed by searing pain on his face. His body lurched uncontrollably, plummeting toward the ground.

“Shit!” That single thought flashed through his mind before the earth rushed up to meet him.
