Chapter 41: You Should Call It Mom
Moments later, as they approached, the faint blue light descending from the ceiling illuminated the scene. The statue lay sprawled on its back, its twin energy blades extinguished, and the crimson flames in its eyes completely snuffed out. It was unmistakably dead.
As for Housen, he lay sprawled atop the statue, his powered armor severely deformed from the fall. Only his specially reinforced helmet remained intact.
“Housen, Housen,” Tang Fang called softly, hesitant to move him.
For a long while, there was no response. Just as despair began to creep into Tang Fang’s heart, Arroz suddenly pointed at a patch of grayish-brown visible beneath Housen. “What’s that?”
Tang Fang glanced down and froze momentarily. “A zergling? A dead one?”
Arroz blinked, realization dawning on him. Quickly bending down, he activated the scanning device on his arm, sweeping it over Housen’s body from bottom to top.
“He’s not completely gone! There’s still vital activity!”
This guy truly had nine lives. Falling from such a height should have killed him instantly, yet somehow he clung to life. On the other hand, the flattened remains of the zergling, sandwiched between the statue and him, now reduced to a grotesque, multicolored paste. It seemed the combined cushioning effect of the statue, the zergling, and the shock-absorption system of his powered armor had spared him an immediate death.
“Phew…” Tang Fang exhaled deeply. Stepping forward, he carefully pressed the release button below Housen’s neck. Hearing a soft click, he gingerly removed the helmet with utmost care.
“Housen, Housen, how are you feeling? Wake up… come on, wake up…”
Housen’s face was deathly pale, a trickle of blood seeping from the corner of his mouth. After calling out repeatedly, Tang Fang and Arroz finally saw his lips twitch slightly, his eyelids fluttering open.
“I… I… What happened?”
His voice was weak, but before he could finish speaking, his throat convulsed, and another stream of blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
“Don’t speak anymore!” Tang Fang exclaimed in alarm, quickly silencing him. Turning to Arroz, he ordered, “Quick, check his condition!”
Before Arroz could act, Housen managed a bitter smile. “No… don’t bother. My insides were shattered during the impact… They’re beyond repair. Right now, I’m only hanging on thanks to a shot of adrenaline.”
Tang Fang turned to look at Arroz, who nodded sadly.
“Heh…” Another trickle of blood escaped Housen’s lips. “At least… The big guy is finally dead. I’ve repaid my debt to you.”
“Can you shut up already?” Tang Fang slammed his fist against the ground in frustration.
Amidst his grief and anger, a thought struck him. “You want to die? Not so easy. I’m keeping this life of yours as a debt forever.” With that, he shouted to Arroz, “Quick, remove his powered armor!”
Though unsure of Tang Fang’s intentions, Arroz complied, carefully unlocking and detaching each module of the armor.
“What… what are you doing? Don’t… dismantle my coffin! We’re supposed… to be friends, aren’t we? At least… let me rest in peace instead… of leaving my corpse out here!”
“You idiot, you’d live longer if you stopped talking,” Arroz snapped, unable to bear Housen’s rambling any longer.
“No, while I can still… talk, I need to say more.”
Arroz glared at him but ignored the comment.
With a final click, the last piece of leg armor came off. Looking at Housen’s mangled lower body, Tang Fang took a deep breath and waved his hand. Two queens appeared—one at Housen’s head, the other at his feet.
“Huh? Their wounds… how did they heal?”
Before Arroz could finish, Tang Fang focused his thoughts. Suddenly, the two queens opened their jagged maws and spat out a large gush of emerald-green viscous fluid directly onto Housen’s face.
The cold, sticky liquid coated his face entirely. Housen blinked in confusion. “It… it spat on me!”
Poor guy. After plummeting 700 meters and barely clinging to life, he was now being bathed in the saliva of hideous creatures. Arroz stared blankly, utterly baffled by Tang Fang’s actions.
“Tang Fang, I’ve already repaid my debt to you. Why are you humiliating me like this?”
The moment those words left his mouth, Housen froze. Was this some kind of miraculous recovery? His speech became fluent again, and his strength seemed to return.
While Housen wore a bewildered expression, Arroz’s eyes widened, fixed intently on Housen’s body.
As the queens’ secretion slowly seeped into his skin, countless pink buds sprouted from his wounds. These buds intertwined, stretching and fusing together to form new muscle tissue. Meanwhile, his shattered bones vibrated rhythmically, gradually reassembling themselves into their original shape.
Tang Fang watched with growing excitement, an indescribable sense of satisfaction swelling within him.
In the game, the queen was a new Zerg strain created by blending DNA from Terran, Protoss, and Zerg. If her secretion could heal Zerg units, perhaps it could also aid humans. His hypothesis proved correct—under the secretion’s influence, Housen’s injuries were healing rapidly before their very eyes.
By now, Housen himself noticed something unusual. The numbness in his body gave way to excruciating pain—a good sign, indicating that his spinal injuries were healing and his nervous system was regaining function.
“This… this is a miracle!” Arroz muttered after a stunned silence, swallowing hard.
He knew this type of alien bug could heal with their secretions, having witnessed it before, but never imagined it could work on humans too. What did this mean? It meant that as long as someone had even a sliver of life left, Tang Fang could snatch them back from the brink of death. This was nothing short of divine intervention!
While Arroz processed this revelation, Housen coughed up several mouthfuls of congealed blood. Gradually, his injuries healed entirely, leaving him seemingly unscathed. Rolling over, he sat up abruptly. “I… I’m fine? I didn’t die? Even after falling from such a height and having my organs shattered, I’m alive?”
Looking at Tang Fang, then at the two queens flanking him, and finally at the thick, amniotic-like secretion covering his body, Housen was utterly bewildered.
After a long pause, comprehension dawned on him. Turning to Tang Fang, he muttered sullenly, his expression worse than if someone had just told him his father had died, “So… I owe you another life.”
This idiot! You'd think he'd be grateful to still be alive! Tang Fang’s face twitched involuntarily. Coldly, he said, “Want to die? That’s easy. Jump again, and I promise I won’t save you this time.”
“So troublesome. Fine, I’ll stay alive for now.”
Tang Fang gritted his teeth in irritation. He’d thought Housen was merely reckless, but apparently, he was also incredibly dense.
Watching the exchange, Arroz couldn’t resist chiming in. Pointing at one of the queens, he smirked. “Good boy, call her mom.”
Housen tilted his head. “What do you mean, Arroz?”
“What do I mean?” Arroz grinned wickedly. “You should be dead. This thing’s spit brought you back to life. Isn’t calling it ‘mom’ appropriate?”
Housen blinked, scrutinizing the grotesque queen, then glanced at the amniotic-like spit coating his body. His face turned green. “Old man, you’re messing with me.”
“Obviously.” Arroz didn’t even spare him a glance. Pulling out a cigar, he sliced off the tip with a dagger, lit it, and took a long drag. Exhaling, he blew the smoke directly into Housen’s face.
Meanwhile, Tang Fang paid no attention to their banter. His focus had shifted to the system interface.
Summoning the one-armed marauder, he directed a queen to spray its wound with secretion. Flesh buds wriggled, bones reshaped, and countless blood vessels and nerves intertwined and spread. Within moments, a brand-new arm materialized before their eyes.
Zerg strains possessed remarkable regenerative abilities. As long as they weren’t instantly killed, even a shred of vitality allowed them to recover fully on creep. Human bio-forces, however, required medivac support to heal. Clearly, Tang Fang lacked medivacs—but the queens filled that gap admirably.
“Damn bastard, nearly got me killed.” A dull thud startled Tang Fang—it was Housen kicking the fallen statue in frustration.
After venting his anger with a couple of kicks, Housen’s gaze fell on the statue’s abdomen. The scales, which had shown signs of cracking under the combined assault of the queens and marauders earlier, had shattered further upon impact during the fall, exposing internal organs—a flickering cluster of dying blue flame.
“Even after all this, it’s still not completely dead?” Fury flashed across Housen’s face. Reaching out, he grabbed at the flame, intent on ripping it out to exact revenge for his earlier ordeal.
