Chapter 42: The Protoss Base

"Idiot, stop!"

Tang Fang's face darkened. Was this guy the reigning champion of reckless behavior? After causing such a massive disaster and nearly losing his life, how could he still act so impulsively? Sure, that tiny flicker of flame seemed insignificant, but who knew how much energy it contained or whether it might explode if touched.

As Tang Fang shouted, he extended his right arm to stop the foolhardy Housen. But just as his hand approached, a sudden buzzing sound echoed in his mind. That emotionless voice, which somehow sounded more enticing to Tang Fang than any sultry starlet’s whisper, spoke again: "Psionic fluctuations detected. Initiating a diagnostic program..."

"Diagnostics complete. Protoss compatibility confirmed."

"Activating Protoss base."

"Commencing frequency analysis..."

"Fluctuation level C+. Warp tree unlocked. Technology level 2. Buildings unlocked: 'Pylon,' 'Gateway,' 'Twilight Council.'"

Tang Fang froze. Protoss base unlocked? Technology level... 2? Both the "Gateway" and "Twilight Council" buildings unlocked at once?

It made sense that biological DNA could unlock the Zerg base and human engineering could unlock the Terran base, but why did the Epsilon ruins have a connection to the Protoss? No matter how he looked at it, Epsilon’s tech tree leaned heavily toward humanity. Why was this happening?

While Tang Fang’s mind swirled with questions, Housen and Arroz were equally stunned. In their vision, that tiny wisp of azure flame—resembling mythic summoned magic—had transformed into streams of glowing runes. These runes snaked up Tang Fang’s right arm before vanishing into his forehead.

"Tang Fang! Tang Fang! Are you alright?" Housen, fearing the strange runes might harm him, tackled him in a bear hug.

But he was too late. As the last rune disappeared into Tang Fang’s forehead, Tang Fang shuddered violently and snapped back to reality. "Housen, why are you hugging me? I’m not interested in men!"

Housen straightened up, inspecting Tang Fang from head to toe. "Are… are you sure you’re okay?"

"Do you want something to be wrong with me?" Tang Fang glared at him, pushing Housen aside forcefully as he stood up.

"Are you really fine?" Arroz asked, frowning.

Tang Fang sighed exasperatedly. "Why do you also ask me that? Do I have flowers growing on my face or something?"

"Just now... those azure flames turned into a flood of runes and surged into your forehead!"

"Did they?" Tang Fang furrowed his brow, pondering for a moment before shrugging it off. Perhaps this was just a peculiar phenomenon caused by the StarCraft system absorbing psionic energy.

"Don’t worry, I’m perfectly fine." he laughed heartily.

How could he not be? The Protoss base had finally been unlocked. Now he possessed all three bases—Terran, Zerg, and Protoss—a massive boost to his hardware capabilities. Not to mention, the statue had gifted him 1,000 minerals and 1,000 gas. His current resource count displayed 1,000 minerals and 1,340 gas.

This single statue was worth as much as the centipede-like monster they’d encountered deep within the caverns of Planet 5. And there was another statue above them!

With no time to explain further, Tang Fang slapped Arroz on the shoulder. "Wait here for a moment." Then, he strode briskly toward the central lift platform, found the control panel, and pressed a red-lit button with practiced ease.

The lift ascended slowly at first, then accelerated, racing toward the top of the ruins.

"What’s he doing?" Arroz asked, perplexed.

Housen shook his head. "Who knows?"

About ten minutes later, the lift decelerated smoothly and came to rest in the center of the hall. Tang Fang stepped off, his expression sour and brooding—a stark contrast to his earlier cheerfulness.

"What happened to you? You go upstairs for a stroll, and come back looking like this?" Housen asked.

Tang Fang shot him a sharp glare but said nothing. He had expected the statue above to yield some resources, only to find the azure flame extinguished, leaving him bitterly disappointed.

Seeing Tang Fang’s displeasure, Arroz didn’t press the issue. Instead, after surveying their surroundings, he asked, "What now? Go back to the acidic vapor zone and continue forward, or explore one of these paths through the ruins?"

"Explore the ruins? Are you serious? Do you have a death wish?" Housen shot back, his voice unusually tinged with caution, a rarity for someone typically so reckless.

Ignoring their bickering, Tang Fang focused on the predicament at hand. Returning wasn’t an option. Even if they escaped the acidic vapor zone, what then? They’d merely survive long enough to be toyed with by the Sulru Empire’s forces. Should they return to the 3789th Division and endure more humiliation? Or hide until the war ended? But without food supplies, how would they survive, let alone escape the barren wasteland of Planet Namie and return to human civilization?

"Let’s move forward and explore the ruins," Tang Fang decided. "But if we encounter another statue guardian, retreat immediately."

He had no choice. To leave Planet Namie, they needed an aerospace vessel. Neither the Silverwing Tempest Infantry Division nor the 3789th Division would offer help. This ruin was likely used to store Epsilon’s aerospace vehicles. Even if they couldn’t operate them, it was their only hope—a desperate gamble, but still a chance.

On another level, Tang Fang harbored a quiet hope. If the psionic core inside the statue could unlock Protoss technology, perhaps other parts of the ruins held similar treasures. What if he could unlock even more structures? If he managed to unlock the Stargate, they wouldn’t need to worry about finding an aerospace vessel. Phoenixes and Void Rays could both create wormholes and warp-travel.

"Alright," Housen conceded, seeing Tang Fang’s resolve. But glancing around, he hesitated. "There are four paths here. Which one do we take?"

Tang Fang scanned the area, realizing their dilemma. One path led back to the small lift room where he and Arroz had arrived. Two others connected to the base of the large lift platform, forming twin tracks that shimmered faintly with blue light—likely transport rails for aerospace vehicles. The final path led to a runic gate identical to the one they’d seen earlier.

"Let’s check out the hangar first," Tang Fang muttered, leading the group onto one of the tracks. After a short walk, they reached the end: a colossal hangar door, fifteen meters wide and over forty meters tall, constructed of an unknown material.
