Chapter 17: The Reckless Third Brother Gu
Although the scene outside the car wasn’t captured by the cameras, Gu Lang’s voice clearly reached the ears of the online viewers in the livestream. Aside from Rosette’s brief popularity from her nickname “Leopard Bro,” it was evident that Gu Lang’s title of “Third Brother Gu” had now become firmly associated with him, and it would be difficult to shake off.
Actually, Rosette should have been called “Leopard Sis.” However, Rosette didn’t care much about such things, and only Wang Ping occasionally had an issue with it. People often become more appreciative of things only after they’ve lost them, and Wang Ping had lost his human identity, so naturally, he was more sensitive to titles associated with status. He had developed a particular fondness for titles like “Big Brother,” “Boss,” and “Uncle.”
"DurianCannon gifted the streamer a yacht ×1"
"DurianCannon gifted the streamer a rocket ×1"
"TheSoftshellTurtleNeedsToGoVegetarian gifted the streamer fish balls ×99"
"CatwithaCello gifted the streamer a yacht ×1"
Aside from a flurry of gift notifications flooding the screen, the bullet comments began to spam it as well.
"The streamer is acting submissive again!"
"Third Brother Gu’s title is official!"
"LOL, Leopard Bro, so vivid!"
"Too bad we didn't catch it on camera!”
“LMAO!"
……
Rosette couldn’t understand what Gu Lang was saying. And even if she could, she probably wouldn’t care. But seeing Wang Ping in the passenger seat, Rosette knew from the previous day’s memory that this meant they were about to leave, so she obediently climbed into the back seat through the open car door.
Gu Lang, like a hotel bellboy, shut the door for Rosette before running to the driver’s seat to start the car.
At the eastern section of the Great Rift Valley, at the entrance of Highway 144, which connects the Maasai Mara and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, lies a small town called Makuyuni. The direction Wang Ping had been indicating all along was toward Makuyuni.
To prevent Gu Lang from pulling any tricks and running away, Wang Ping had deliberately avoided all town centers along the way. But in Africa, most human settlements were established along rivers, so Gu Lang’s journey had perfectly avoided all major rivers.
This was why, after traveling over a hundred kilometers, Gu Lang hadn’t seen any water sources.
However, it wasn’t that there weren’t any water sources in remote areas. After all, where would the animals on the grasslands drink? To the north of their route, there was a large lake. It was the largest freshwater lake in the area.
Gu Lang had asked a stupid question from the start. While smaller water sources were difficult to find, large lakes like this were always marked on navigation maps, no matter how unreliable the map might be.
It wasn’t until they had driven for several dozen kilometers that Gu Lang realized the issue.
Not because he could vaguely see the shimmer of water ahead, but because the navigation map had marked the lake’s location.
Maybe it was because, since waking up, Wang Ping and Rosette had shown less obvious hostility toward him compared to the day before. This had allowed Gu Lang to relax a bit. And when people relax, they tend to do foolish things.
"Ahahaha, as everyone can see, we’ve reached a lake ahead, called... uh..." Gu Lang suddenly realized there was no name on the map and that the viewers in the livestream couldn’t see what was ahead. Besides, he was sitting next to two animals.
Wang Ping glanced at Gu Lang, confused. What was with this sudden tour guide act? The water was already visible ahead; what did he need to tell me?
Gu Lang could feel Wang Ping watching him from the corner of his eye and felt a bit nervous. But then he thought, why should I be nervous? Even if this honey badger is smart, how could he possibly know I’m livestreaming?
Once he had this thought, Gu Lang immediately felt like he was on top of the intelligence hierarchy and could look down on all life on the African savanna. He cleared his throat and continued, “Next, we’re about to reach a lake on the African grasslands. We’ll stop here to rest, and um, wash the car.”
Wang Ping was even more confused. Was he talking to me?
Looking back at Rosette, who was lying bored on the backseat, staring out the window, Wang Ping began to feel lost. Then he saw Gu Lang suddenly raise his hand to adjust the camera on the rearview mirror.
“Everyone, look, our destination is ahead, wow! So beautiful!”
As the off-road vehicle passed through some tall grass, the view ahead suddenly opened up, revealing shimmering water surface reflecting golden dots of light under the sun. In the center of the lake, many unknown water birds were fluttering on and off the water’s surface. The lake was situated in a depression, surrounded by vast reed beds and tall grass, with numerous unknown trees encircling it.
This wild lake was, of course, surrounded by thick vegetation, especially at the shallow water's edge, where aquatic plants had grown out of the water, leaving no place to step. But in terms of scenery, it far outshone many artificially adorned large lakes.
“Wow!”
“So beautiful!”
“Natural bathhouse”
“Pretty!”
“Excuse me, what kind of bird is that?”
“Staring in awe, isn’t it?”
The livestream was filled with admiration, but Wang Ping, sitting in the passenger seat, suddenly realized what was going on.
“Damn it!” he cursed inwardly. He finally realized that Gu Lang was actually speaking to someone else and that the car was equipped with a camera—someone else could see everything that was happening!
A wave of fear surged in Wang Ping’s heart, and his soul seemed to shiver, filling him with a confused, urgent, and desperate feeling—like playing a game on a phone in class, only to turn around and find the teacher staring at you from behind.
His every action and behavior, from start to finish, had been in plain view of others. Yet he still thought his disguise was flawless. Of course, it can't be said that Wang Ping's disguise was poor; otherwise, Gu Lang wouldn't have started livestreaming right in front of him.
But Wang Ping didn’t know what kind of livestream this was. He thought Gu Lang was a member of some organization, reporting the trip to his team.
No wonder Gu Lang hadn’t spoken earlier but suddenly started talking here. He must have wanted to identify a landmark to notify his teammates to come for a rescue! This lake, wasn't it the most obvious coordinate? There wouldn’t be another lake this size in the area. Perhaps, his rescuers had already set out!
“Damn it!” This was Wang Ping’s first reaction.
“I'm in trouble!” This was his second reaction.
“Should I kill him?” This was the instinctive question that popped into his head.
Completely unaware that his careless words had already put him on the brink of disaster, Gu Lang mistook Wang Ping's lack of reaction for ignorance. Feeling cocky, he started enthusiastically showing off the surrounding scenery to his livestream audience.
“Everyone, look, the lake ahead is huge. I think I’ll take a bath, hahaha...”
“Uh, the plants around are very dense, so we should be careful about wild animals hiding inside...”
“Huh? Are there animals drinking water over there?”
On the screen, the camera caught sight of several antelopes drinking at the edge of the lake. Hearing the car’s engine, they quickly bolted into the grass and disappeared.
Wang Ping felt his IQ had never been insulted so badly, and his anger was rising. Just as Gu Lang slowed down the car, preparing to stop, Wang Ping suddenly leaped onto the dashboard.
“You...”
Smack!
Before Gu Lang could finish his word, he saw Wang Ping suddenly raise his paw and slap the rearview mirror. The mirror, along with the camera, was shattered into pieces, and the fragments fell onto Gu Lang.
Gu Lang was startled and hurriedly slammed the brakes. The off-road vehicle jolted to a halt, throwing Wang Ping off balance. He sat down heavily on the dashboard, almost flipping out of the car.
Rosette, in the back seat, was jolted by the sudden change in momentum and quickly stood up alertly.
The sudden incident caught Gu Lang completely off guard. The livestream viewers saw nothing but a blur, followed by a black screen. The comments immediately flooded in with confusion.
“WTF”
“WTF +1”
“What happened?”
“What was that?”
“What happened to the streamer?”
“Lol, maybe his phone just died from streaming all night.”
“Are you an idiot?”
…
"What are you doing!" Gu Lang instinctively shouted, but immediately regretted it.
Though the camera had been smashed, the microphone was still working, so the viewers could still hear Gu Lang’s voice, making them even more confused.
Wang Ping jumped onto the dashboard again, glaring at Gu Lang. His claws tapping rhythmically on the dashboard, still in the same posture, but with a murderous gleam in his eyes.
Gu Lang’s heart skipped a beat. It was the first time he had felt such an intense sense of death emanating from Wang Ping. Even when he first met Wang Ping or when Rosette knocked him down, he never felt as close to death as he did now.
“I…” Gu Lang was almost on the verge of tears. What had he done to anger Wang Ping? He had no idea. Facing such a difficult animal, more difficult than a girlfriend, Gu Lang was completely panicked.
“Roar!”
At that moment, Rosette, who had been sitting in the back seat, suddenly turned to look toward the rear of the car, letting out a warning growl through the rear window.
Both Gu Lang and Wang Ping turned to look.
In the rearview, the tall grass had been flattened by the off-road car, revealing several figures in the distance.
Gu Lang couldn’t make them out clearly, but Wang Ping could see them very well.
A few spotted hyenas were lurking behind, following them from afar.
