Chapter 17: Safe Return

"His name is Tang Yan? I will remember that." Byron regained his usual composure, smiling as he looked at the woman who was weaning a leather collar. "Noble Miss Zhou Ai, will you be waiting for him here, or will you come with me?"

Zhou Ai’s expression turned cold, and a glint of sharpness flashed in her eyes. She neither answered nor moved. Along the way, Tang Fang had given her a very mysterious impression. After each battle, his strength seemed to grow.

For some reason, a woman's intuition told her that he was likely not dead. In fact, it might even be that disaster had turned into fortune for him.

"He is not called Tang Yan, his name is Tang Fang." Arroz spoke without looking up.

Byron stopped, turned around with a smile, and said, "Oh, Tang Fang. On this day next year, according to your people’s customs, I will offer a stick of incense for him. Although I don’t know how he managed to hold off that creature, we must thank him."

"Perhaps your kind intentions were all for nothing," Arroz muttered, his gaze shifting toward the dark, hollow depths ahead.

...

685, 690... 895... 1200... 1540.

With a soft "gurgle," the gas value in the system interface froze at 1540. A full 1000 gas—almost an hour from the time it started gathering—was gained by the extractor, which cost 25 crystals. This was an unexpected surprise!

1730 crystals and 1540 gas. Now, he could upgrade the options in the Spawning Pool and Evolution Chamber. Should he choose "Metabolic Boost," or "Zerg Melee Attack," "Zerg Range Attack," or perhaps the "Zerg Ground Unit Carapace" to increase survival rates?

After some hesitation, he couldn't decide which upgrade to pursue first. Each option had its own unique qualities. The safest strategy was to postpone the decision, adapting to circumstances as they arose. He could always research them later when the need arose.

With the Queen’s "Spawn Larvae" ability, he quickly spent 400 crystals to hatch 22 Zerglings. Feeling his combat strength restored and his resources accumulating, Tang Fang walked toward the entrance of the spiral rock cavern with a satisfied, almost giddy look on his face—like someone who had just won over their first love.

When he reached the layer above the massive hollow, seeing the two people waiting on a rock outcropping, he paused in surprise, a warmth filling his heart. "You didn't leave?"

Arroz revealed a rare smile and said, "I knew you'd be fine." With that, he jumped off the rock and started walking back.

Zhou Ai looked him up and down, then smiled with her teeth showing. "You were right. Byron’s good intentions were likely wasted. I wonder how they'll react when they find out you're still alive."

Knowing that even if she asked, Tang Fang might not explain, Zhou Ai wisely kept quiet about what had happened. With a playful tone, she said this, then jumped off the rock and quickly followed Arroz.

What did she mean by that? Tang Fang frowned, trying but failing to make sense of it. Shrugging it off, he followed them toward the underground exit, guided by the navigation device's map.

...

After an entire night of desperate travel, when Byron and the others reached the exit, the stormy night of Planet 5 had passed. The young "Salton" star, like a mix-blooded youth with an exposed chest and avant-garde clothes, emitted a unique solar wind that dispersed the negative charges in the high clouds. The lightning faded, the dark clouds dissipated, and the western hemisphere of Planet 5 was bathed in a sliver of light.

After Harvey sent a signal to the base, a low rumble echoed through the yellow-brown sky about half an hour later. Moments later, a Scorpion armed transport helicopter appeared in everyone's sight and slowly descended onto the sand dunes.

With a burst of air pressure, the cabin door opened, and a squad of fully armed soldiers marched out, led by a bald man holding a cheap cigar in his mouth. He waved the gun in his hand, saying, "Put down your weapons."

Byron and the others exchanged glances and silently tossed their guns onto the ground, unstrapping their grenade belts and dropping them aside.

The bald man seemed slightly relieved and signaled his men to spread out for caution. He stepped forward, asking, "Mission completed?"

Harvey and Naru quickly pulled out their PDAs from their bags and handed them over. "The readings are all here."

"We sent 33 people. Why are only you few back?"

Before Harvey could speak, a big-bearded man behind the bald man jumped in, saying, "They... they’re all dead. There were monsters down there!"

"Monsters?" Though the bald man had expected it, his face still changed.

"I have pictures." The big-bearded man squeezed forward and pulled out a multifunction camera from his bag. As he pressed a button, a 3D image of a centipede-like creature appeared in the air.

Byron and the others were briefly stunned. No one had expected the big-bearded man, who seemed clumsy, to be so meticulous.

The bald man and the marines behind him exchanged nervous glances. After analyzing the image data, it was clear that the ugly creature lying in the base's dissection room was nothing compared to the monstrous centipede creature before them. Byron and the others had somehow survived. They were indeed fortunate.

"Wait here. I need to report to the base," the bald man spat out the remaining half of his cigar, grabbed the PDA and camera, and turned to enter the helicopter.

After a flash of light, a military officer with a cold expression appeared on the communication screen. If Tang Fang had been there, he would have immediately recognized him—this was Wei Haitao, the officer who had repeatedly plotted against him.

"Commander, did you get the monster's data?" the bald man asked.

Wei Haitao nodded. "I didn’t expect such a giant beast to exist beneath the surface of Planet 5."

After a moment of silence, he asked, "How many of the prisoners are left?"

"Seven outside."

"What about Tang Yan? Is he with you?"

The bald man shook his head. "We didn’t see him. According to the others, he's dead."

Wei Haitao's eyes flashed with a cold light. He nodded slightly. "I don’t need to tell you what you need to do next, do I?"

"Don’t worry, commander." The bald man replied before cutting off the communication.

Soon after, the bald man emerged from the Scorpion armed transport helicopter, signaling for the team to board. "Alright, let them board. We’re heading back to the base."

Naru and the others looked overjoyed and hurried toward the cabin. They couldn’t wait to leave this wretched place.

Byron was the last to enter, but something about the bald man’s earlier gesture struck him as odd. Housen, sensing something, slowed his pace and moved slightly to the side.

At that moment, the bald man outside the cabin suddenly smiled coldly and raised his assault rifle.

"Da-da-da!" The sound of gunfire rang out.
