Chapter 16: Searching for Water
The nights in Tanzania come about five hours later than in China, and similarly, when China greets the sunrise of a new day, the vast grasslands on the other side of the world are still cloaked in the darkness of early dawn.
While Gu Lang was still dreaming in his car, his Douyu livestream channel experienced a massive surge in popularity on the second day.
The buzz began with a viral video circulating online since the previous night, titled: "Douyu Streamer Faces Hyena Pack in the Wild, Buzz-Cut Bro Teams Up with Leopard." The clip was taken by viewers who had been watching live and featured Wang Ping battling the hyenas. Later, Douyu's staff promptly released an excerpt of that livestream footage, with the Douyu Live watermark and Gu Lang's channel number clearly visible and unblurred.
After watching the video, countless viewers immediately followed Gu Lang and flocked to his livestream.
However, at this time, the channel still showed only darkness, with the faint outline of Gu Lang sleeping in the driver’s seat. Keen-eyed viewers could spot Rosette in the back seat, wrapped in bandages. Although it was still the middle of the night in Africa and there wasn’t any exciting content on the stream, viewers remained patiently in the livestream channel. Some who had already started work simply left their phones running with the stream open, waiting while they worked.
As the first rays of morning sunlight illuminated the savanna, Wang Ping finally stirred awake.
Shaking his groggy head, it took him a moment to recall the events of the previous night. He’d been bitten by a puff adder on the leg and had apparently passed out from the venom.
Sitting on the grass, Wang Ping examined his bitten leg with his claws, carefully searching for any sign of a wound. Yet, he found nothing. Though his immunity to venom was remarkable, he knew it didn’t mean the poison wouldn’t have an effect. The thought of being unconscious in a predator-filled area unsettled him—especially if some animal with peculiar tastes decided venom-tainted prey was a delicacy.
The campfire from last night had long since burned out, leaving no trace of warmth. Wang Ping pawed through the ashes, but even the snake’s charred remains were gone. The cleanup had been thorough.
Bang!
The windshield-less off-road vehicle behind him creaked as Rosette jumped out, stretching lazily on the ground, and yawning with a few growling sounds.
"It’s awake! It’s awake!"
"Wow, that leopard is gorgeous. I wish I could have one!"
"Wake up, streamer!"
"It really is bandaged—so that video was real!"
"Wait, is that blood on the car? So brutal!"
"What’s in the back seat? Oh my god!"
As the daylight brightened, the livestream audience could now see inside the car more clearly. With Rosette’s movements, the chat came alive, and even new viewers began sending gifts.
"IllegalAccount gifted 1 rocket."
"NewGenGent gifted 1 plane."
"NewGenGent gifted 10 planes."
"NewGenGent: Oh shit, accidental click…"
Gu Lang, startled awake by Rosette’s leap, groggily opened the car door, yawning repeatedly as he stepped out. After a grueling day yesterday, his body ached, especially his chest and thighs, which felt like they’d been trampled by a beast.
Stretching, Gu Lang circled to the other side of the car and saw Rosette stretching and Wang Ping sitting idly, lost in thought. He waved, cheerfully greeting, “Good morning!”
Good your uncle!
Annoyed about the snakebite ordeal, Wang Ping turned his head away in irritation when he saw Gu Lang’s nonchalant demeanor.
As for Rosette, it paid him no mind, acting as if tolerating him was already an act of great benevolence.
Unbothered, Gu Lang shrugged and went to the back seat to fetch his backpack, intending to freshen up.
Opening the car door unleashed a nauseating stench—a mix of blood and rot—that hit him like a brick wall, almost making him vomit on the spot.
In the back seat lay the mangled remains of a hyena, its viscera leaking some unidentifiable liquid that had dried into sticky, crusty stains across the upholstery. Blood trails stretched from the back seat to the front and onto the dashboard, marking Rosette’s route from the night before.
The realization that he had slept amid this gore overwhelmed Gu Lang, and he dashed behind the car to vomit.
"Blegh!"
Rosette, hearing the noise, looked over, saw the open car door, and promptly dragged the hyena carcass outside to start her breakfast.
Gu Lang turned back just in time to witness Rosette tearing into the hyena’s remains, and he spun around to throw up again.
"Blegh!"
Wang Ping, watching this from the side, silently mocked Gu Lang’s weak constitution. He hopped into the car, rummaging through the backpack in search of food.
"Oh! Another animal is in the stream!"
"Isn’t that Buzz-Cut Bro?"
"Is that the one from the video?"
Uninformed viewers flooded the chat with questions, and knowledgeable fans began explaining. Some jokingly referred to them as Big Brother Buzz-Cut, Second Brother Leopard, and Third Brother Gu in the comments.
Wang Ping soon found some beef jerky, though most of it had already been eaten. He unearthed a can of beef and began prying it open with his claws.
"Holy shit!"
"That’s the streamer’s emergency ration, right?"
"This animal is so smart."
"SnarkyBye gifted 1 yacht."
"Haha, it knows there’s meat in there!"
"Moyan gifted the streamer 99 membership cards…"
"So cute, I want it!"
"I’m also very cute. Do you want me too?"
Compared to yesterday, today's bullet comments were clearly much more playful and chaotic, with the conversation veering off track in no time. Clearly, these people didn’t know that Wang Ping and Rosette were just recent additions to Gu Lang's stream. To be precise, Gu Lang was still in a situation where his life could be in danger at any moment.
As for the Tanzania rescue team that had received a request from the embassy to search for Gu Lang, by this time, they had already received word and returned home.
When the person in question escaped danger, the first thing he did wasn't to contact the rescue team and report his coordinates, but instead, he dragged along two animals that could easily lead him to his doom, running wild all over the place. The rescue team didn't even want to waste time on such an obviously clueless tourist. At this point, only the embassy staff was still working on the search plan.
Gu Lang vomited for a long time, and when there was nothing left in his stomach, he finally returned to the car. Rosette was still relentlessly gnawing on the skeleton of the carcass. Wang Ping sat nonchalantly on the edge of the car, not caring about the mess around him, cracking open a can of beef jerky with his claws and eating it piece by piece.
Since waking up, Wang Ping had felt extremely hungry and no longer cared about the cleanliness of his claws. It seemed that detoxifying the snake venom had come at a cost, and he had no idea how much fat his small frame had burned in the process.
Gu Lang wasn’t in the mood or had the appetite for breakfast. He took a bottle of water and rinsed his mouth, then, either intentionally or unintentionally, glanced at Wang Ping and said, "Hey, do you know if there's a water source nearby? How about we wash the car?"
Wang Ping couldn’t care less about the car but found himself longing for a bath after the mention of water, feeling grimy from the blood and grime clinging to his fur.
While Wang Ping didn’t know the terrain well, finding water in the wild didn’t require a map. Following lush vegetation or animal tracks would eventually lead to a water source.
Tossing the empty can back into Gu Lang’s backpack, Wang Ping hopped into the passenger seat, knocking on the window.
“This guy really understands me!” Gu Lang muttered, baffled, before turning to Rosette. “Uh… Leopard… Leopard Bro, time to head out!”
