Chapter 13 — Quilt
It was as soft like Rong Xun's face.
After Chu Feng arrived home, he greeted his parents and went upstairs to find Chu Rou.
He knocked on Chu Rou's door. Chu Rou soon came to open the door. When she saw Chu Feng, she pouted and looked unhappy.
“What’s the matter?” Chu Feng asked with a smile. He no longer remembered how many years he hadn't seen Chu Rou pouting. Her younger sister wouldn’t do this kind of behavior once she grew up.
“Did you go to dinner with Senior Rong Xun?” Chu Rou asked gently.
“En.” Chu Feng told his family that he was going out to find his deskmate. Chu Rou would naturally know. In fact, he didn't specifically tell Chu Rou that he sat at the same table with Rong Xun. One day, Chu Rou bought a discounted drink in the supermarket and saw him with Rong Xun when she sent it to the classroom.
“You didn’t take me.” Chu Rou complained dissatisfiedly.
Chu Feng smiled slightly and said, “Next time, I’ll remember to call you." As for when next time is, forget about what he said.
In fact, after Rong Xun committed suicide, Chu Rou’s state and the postscript written by Rong Xun in his handwritten book, allowed Chu Feng to confirm that Chu Rou had always liked Rong Xun. Rong Xun also knew that he just couldn’t respond to Chu Rou. In this life, Chu Feng would definitely be with Rong Xun, and he also knew that Rong Xun had always liked him, so Chu Rou had no chance. However, the girl's feelings and thoughts were delicate, and Chu Feng didn't want to speak too bluntly and hurt Chu Rou, so he reduced the chance of contact between Chu Rou and Rong Xun. Once Chu Rou is older and stronger, he would try to tell her without hurting her.
“Then don't forget.” Chu Rou seemed a little better.
“Well, I brought you food, I put it in the kitchen, let's go down and eat.” Chu Feng said.
Hearing that Chu Feng brought her food, Chu Rou immediately smiled and said, “Brother is the best!” After that, she happily went downstairs.
Chu Feng smiled helplessly and went back to his room.
After taking a shower, Chu Feng sat at the table and prepared to copy Rong Xun's notes for a while, then go to bed once he got sleepy.
Song Xin knocked on the door and came in with a big packing box.
“Are you studying?” Song Xin smiled at him and said, “I'm afraid I will forget it tomorrow, so I will bring it to you first.”
“What?” Chu Feng asked, looking at the things in Song Xin's hand.
“Quilt.” Song Xin put down the box and said, “It’s getting colder day by day. Take this quilt to the school. I bought you and Chu Rou bedding. Your Aunt Guan Min recommended it. Her children also use this cover. It's good.”
Guan Min is Song Xin's agent. Guan Min took Song Xin with her when she made her debut. They were similar in age and personality, so they always had a very good relationship. They had never been angry with each other. They often go shopping and travel together after work. They had the same style in children’s education.
Chu Feng took a closer look at the box. It was written that the silk quilt was of good quality. Every year when the season changed, his mother would prepare a new quilt for him. When he checked the cabinet before, he saw a clean thick quilt pressed at the bottom part. He didn't remember what happened to the quilt, but there must be no problem using it in winter. His quilt was enough for him since there was a heater.
Although he already had a quilt, Chu Feng didn't refuse. He just said, “Okay, I'll take it back to school tomorrow. By the way, are you going out tomorrow?”
“No, is there something?” Song Xin asked.
“Can your driver take me to school? I just want to bring some thick clothes to school. With this quilt, a car is more convenient.” Chu Feng said. He originally wanted to take a taxi to pick up Rong Xun tomorrow, but he had a lot of things to bring. A car was more convenient. Taxis are not allowed to enter the school, but the car that came to send the children can drive directly to the downstairs of the dormitory as long as they show the student ID card and register.
“Okay, I'll talk to the driver later.” Song Xin couldn't refuse this trivial matter.
“In this way, tomorrow I will drop by to pick up my deskmate, and he will probably also bring clothes to school.” He asked his mother's driver to pick up Rong Xun. Once the driver returned, he would definitely mention it to his mother. It would be better for him to say it directly, saving his mother from asking him.
“It should be, it should be.” After hearing that he was going to pick up his deskmate, Song Xin naturally had no reason not to agree.
As they talked, Song Xin's gaze fell on the notebook on Chu Feng's desk, “Are these books yours?”
“Well, it’s my deskmate. These are all the notes he compiled, which I borrowed from him to copy.” Chu Feng said. Rong Xun's notes were very detailed. It took a lot of time to copy, but it was indeed very useful.
“What a good boy.” Song Xin said emotionally. She knew that by the third year of high school, it was already too late to review by yourself. How could you have time to care about others? On weekends, he also allowed others to borrow his notes to copy, which was somewhat of a delay to him.
Song Xin said, “I'll ask the kitchen cook to cook more delicious food tomorrow morning. You can take it to your deskmate.”
“Okay,” Chu Feng said. Even if his mother didn't say it, he’d tell the kitchen tomorrow morning.
“By the way, what's the name of deskmate?" Song Xin felt that she couldn't even know someone else's name. Song Xin felt she couldn’t always refer to her son’s deskmate as “other person” because she didn’t know his name.
“Rong Xun.” Chu Feng wrote Rong Xun's name on the paper so that his mother would know which two words it was.
Song Xin nodded and memorized the name in her heart.
“Okay, you should rest early. Don't stay up too late.” Song Xin said.
“Good night,” Song Xin said, she turned and left.
After Chu Feng read the book for a while, he felt a little sleepy. He took his phone and sent Rong Xun the word “Goodnight”, then he turned off the light and laid down on the bed. After a while, Rong Xun also replied “Goodnight”, Chu Feng smiled, then he put down his phone, and went to sleep in peace.
After lunch the next day, Chu Feng packed up his things and was ready to pick up Rong Xun.
“Brother, I'm going back to school, too. Take me with you?” Chu Rou said, caught up with Chu Feng who had gone downstairs.
Chu Feng remembered that Chu Rou also wanted to take the quilt to school. Even if he didn't want Chu Rou to have more contact with Rong Xun, he couldn't let his sister bring this thing to take a taxi alone.
“Okay, go get your things,” Chu Feng said.
“Okay,” Chu Rou hurried back to her room to get her things.
Chu Rou heard Song Xin mention that Chu Feng was going to pick up Rong Xun when she was eating breakfast this morning. Song Xin also reminded Chu Feng not to forget to bring Rong Xun's food.
After getting in the car, they rushed to Rong Xun's house first. Along the way, Chu Rou was smiling and seemed to be in a good mood.
After they arrived downstairs at Rong Xun’s house, Chu Feng called Rong Xun. Rong Xun soon came down with a bag on his back. In addition to the laptop, he also carried a bag with some clothes suitable for this season. Chu Feng called him this morning and asked him to bring it with him. A car was more convenient for bringing things than having Rong Xun take the subway by himself.
“Senior Rong Xun.” Chu Rou was there and waved at him.
Rong Xun walked over with a smile, “You’re here as well?”
Chu Rou, “En, taking advantage of my brother to take things along the way back to school.” Chu Rou didn't notice that Rong Xun's laptop was Chu Feng's, so she didn't ask anything.
Chu Feng took Rong Xun's things and put them on the front passenger's seat. Then he sat in the back seat before calling Rong Xun to get in the car. After Rong Xun got on the bus, the driver started the car again and went to the school.
There were three people in the back seat. Although it wasn’t crowded, it wasn’t spacious either. Chu Feng sat in the middle, separating Rong Xun and Chu Rou. In fact, it was better if one sat in the front passenger seat, but he couldn't let Rong Xun and Chu Rou sit alone in the back, nor could he let Chu Rou sit in the front, let alone sit separately with Rong Xun, so he could only maintain the current situation.
Along the way, Chu Rou talked with Rong Xun and was particularly lively.
Chu Feng didn't want Chu Rou to attract too much Rong Xun's attention, so he quietly held Rong Xun's hand where Chu Rou couldn’t see and hid it behind him.
Rong Xun's face was layered in pink, but he didn't break free and obediently let Chu Feng hold it.
After arriving at the school, the two first sent Chu Rou to the downstairs of her dormitory, and then went to their own dormitory. Chu Feng didn't ask Rong Xun to help with his things, but let him take his own. Then he said goodbye to the driver with big and small bags and went upstairs with Rong Xun.
After they opened the door, the air wasn’t so good because the window hadn’t been opened for two days. Rong Xun put down his things and opened the window first. Fresh air poured in, making people feel more comfortable.
Chu Feng closed the door and put the things on the table first. Gui Heng and Si Xian hadn't returned yet, they would probably be back by dinner time.
“What did you bring?” Rong Xun went over and looked carefully at the big box Chu Feng had carried and found it was a quilt.
“It’s for you,” Chu Feng said.
“I don’t need it, my quilt is still pretty good at the moment.” Rong Xun said.
“It's getting colder. You can only use your quilt till the end of October, you will have to change it sooner.”
“I still have a thicker one.” Rong Xun infrequently changed his quilt and wasn’t as often as Chu Feng, but if there was a heater, his quilt could withstand it.
“This quilt is of good quality, and you don't have to take it from home.” When he packed Rong Xun's things, he didn't see other quilts in the cabinet. He expected that Rong Xun would have to take it from home if he wanted to change quilts.
Chu Feng said, “I have many quilts. I can't use this one. Just enough for you.” Chu Feng took out the quilt and put it on his bed first. It's a double quilt. Normally, his mother would buy this type of quilt. Although it was a bit large to use in school, when pressed together, it would be very warm.
Rong Xun was using a single quilt now, and he reckoned that there was no suitable quilt cover. Chu Feng found a set of blue and white with dots from his cabinet. He first threw the sheets and pillowcases on Rong Xun's bed, and then said, “Go wash your hands, and then help me with the quilt cover.” This kind of work, if you didn't have a little technique, changing the quilt cover was quite troublesome.
Rong Xun saw that Chu Feng had prepared a quilt, so he didn't refuse again. After he washed his hands, he came back and said, “Let me do it. It's too much trouble for you to do this.”
He saw that Rong Xun seemed to have a technique in changing quilts, so Chu Feng didn’t struggle with him. Rong Xun got on his bed, then folded the quilt several times, put one end into the quilt cover, then turned it over several times, and the quilt was covered. After that, the two pulled two corners respectively and pulled the quilt neatly, and it was finished.
“Your method is good.” Chu Feng smiled.
“I learned it from my mother.” Rong Xun said.
After that, Chu Feng helped Rong Xun change all the pillowcases and sheets. He liked the entire set of bedding matched. This set of sheets was bought during the summer vacation. After it was washed, he brought it to school, but it wasn’t used. It happened to be given to Rong Xun.
Rong Xun touched the light and soft quilt, and his heart softened. He didn’t expect Chu Feng to be so meticulous, which made him feel that it was very right and worthwhile to like Chu Feng.
Chu Feng didn't know what Rong Xun was thinking, but when he folded the quilt for Rong Xun, he suddenly felt that the quilt was really good, it was soft like Rong Xun's face.
The author has something to say:
Soft quilt, soft Xiao Xun!
Footnotes:
1. the girl's feelings and thoughts were delicate — 不过女孩子心思细, MTL gave me “But the girl was careful”, I can’t use that since it doesn't make sense. After a little searching, this is the result. If you know how to translate that, tell me in the comments. Thank you!
2. bedding — MTL says “bed”. RAWS also used “bed”. But that’s not it. It’s not like everything can be translated literally or directly translated. So, I just used bedding. To be honest, I don’t know anything about bedding, quilts and etcetera. I live in a tropical country, using a lot of those things would be too hot to sleep on. So, I only use two bed sheets and a blanket instead of a duvet or quilt. I’ve only seen that in hotels, lol. Even with AC on, it’s not comfortable since it’s making me sweat.
3. angry with each other — 从来没红过脸, in English “never got red-faced”. Red-faced have a Iot of definition, I read it from here: https://www.hpu.edu/research-publications/tesol-working-papers/2010/BaiRed.pdf
4. notes — 知识点, knowledge points, language points, knowledge. I just used notes since that’s common.
5. taking advantage of my brother to take things along the way back to school — 沾哥哥的光,顺道带东西回学校, my translation sounds rude. But I don’t know how to rephrase that.
6. Chu Rou — 两人先把储烽送到寝室楼下, I am not sure if there’s a typo here, I don’t understand Chinese. But 储烽, refers to Chu Feng. The 两人先把储烽送到寝室楼下 translated in English is “The two(they) first sent Chu Feng to the bedroom downstairs.” But I’m pretty sure they were referring to Chu Rou before they went to their dorm.
7. heater — 暖气, meaning central heating, heater, warm air.
Translator's Notes:
In my country, we don’t really use “deskmate” we just use “the person sitting beside you” or “classmate”. I don’t know what the difference is between tablemate, deskmate, and seatmate. I will try to search later and might revise previous chapters once I have time.
In my country we use "tableneighbour" haha
ReplyDeleteThank you for translating!
Oh, interesting! Too bad, if I translate that too my native language, it would not make sense hahahaha. But great, I learned a new thing!
