CHAPTER 12 — NIGHT MARKET
It was warm and made him feel at ease.

At almost nine o'clock in the evening, Chu Feng’s father, Chu Tang, arrived back home after a dinner party. Although Chu Tang was strict with his children, he loved his wife very much and was unwilling to say “no”.
“You’re back.” Song Xin came out when she heard the movement. Her gentle smile with the charm of a mature woman, making her look extraordinarily beautiful.
“What are you doing?” Chu Tang asked.
“Get some fruit and send it to Chu Feng and Chu Rou later.” Song Xin smiled. Not long after, Chu Rou just came back, she just went upstairs to take a bath.
“They want to eat, let them get it by themselves.” Chu Tang couldn't bear to let his wife get busy.
Song Xin said with a smile, “It's all done. Just in time, you send it to Chu Feng when you go up.” It was rare for her son to study hard, so she had to let her husband take a look, to save the father and son from being at loggerheads all day long.
“Okay.” Chu Tang didn't refuse either. He took the fruit tray for Chu Feng and went upstairs.
Chu Tang knocked on Chu Feng's door, and Chu Feng's voice came from inside: “Please come in.”
Chu Tang pushed open the door and walked in. He saw Chu Feng turning the book and writing on the paper. He hesitated for a while, but on second thought, he thought that Chu Feng was probably just fooling around on his homework, so he still walked over with a serious face, placed the fruit on the table, and then glanced at Chu Feng's paper. At this time, more than half had been written on Chu Feng's paper. The handwriting was very neat and organized, completely different from the messy writing on his papers from before. Let's not say whether the answer is right or not, at least the attitude is very correct. Let's not mention whether the answer was right or wrong, at least the attitude was proper and correct.
Chu Feng thought his mother had sent him fruit and didn't look up, but he soon smelled a men's perfume and realized that it was his father.
Chu Feng looked up at him and saw his father stare at his paper a few times, then looked at him again. He put down the fruit without saying anything and left. Just before he closed the door, he unexpectedly and rarely said, “Rest early, don't stay up late.”
In the past, he and his father had always been irreconcilable and even half a sentence was too much for them to say. But his father's attitude today made Chu Feng unable to find a point to quarrel with.
After Chu Tang took a shower, he didn't go directly to his study, but went downstairs to find Song Xin.
Song Xin was sitting in the living room watching TV, with dried strawberries in her hand, eating one from time to time.
Chu Tang sat next to Song Xin and asked, “What’s the matter with Chu Feng?”
“What's the matter?” Song Xin glanced at him and asked as if nothing had happened.
Chu Tang frowned and said, “He's actually studying. He looks very serious. I saw several books on the table. The words on them don't look like they were written by him. I don't know if they were borrowed or something. What stimulated him?”
Song Xin angrily hammered Chu Tang, “Are you not satisfied with your child seriously studying?”
Chu Tang said, “I'm not dissatisfied. I just think it’s unusual.”
Song Xin smiled helplessly and told Chu Tang what Chu Feng told her at dinner today.
“He really said that?” Chu Tang obviously didn't believe it.
Song Xin stared and said, “Would I lie to you?”
“That's not what I mean.” Chu Tang still felt a little uneasy. “As long as he’s not being hot-headed. You're not going to work recently, just look after Chu Feng.”
“I believe in my son anyway.” Song Xin said confidently.
As they were talking, Chu Rou came downstairs to warm up the milk. When she saw Chu Tang, she ran coyly and acted spoiled for a while. Chu Tang still loved this daughter very much. Chu Rou had never let him worry about her and was very considerate, so the father-daughter relationship had always been good.
After acting spoiled, Chu Rou went to the kitchen to warm up the milk, and Chu Tang said to her, “Give your brother a glass too.”
“Okay.” Chu Rou smiled. Her father suddenly began to care about her brother, of course, she was very happy. No matter what, the harmony of the family was the most important.
On Saturday, Chu Feng did not disappoint his parents. He read books all day and didn't change his clothes downstairs until the evening.
“Going out?” Song Xin asked, seeing him all dressed up.
“Yes, I want to ask my deskmate to go to the night market.” Chu Feng said.
When she heard that he was going out with his deskmate, Song Xin was relieved and said, “Go. After reading at home all day, go out and relax. You take the initiative to pay the bill and get along well with others.”
“I know.” Chu Feng smiled and nodded.
Chu Tang, who was sitting in the living room, rarely saw Chu Feng go out without Gui Heng, so he didn't object. He just said, “Don't come back too late. Is the money enough?”
Chu Feng was a little surprised. This was the first time his father took the initiative to ask him if he had enough money and looked like he was going to give money.
“It’s enough. I'll be back at 9:30 at the latest,” said Chu Feng, who also restrained his usual rebelliousness.
“Well, go.” Chu Tang nodded and didn’t say much. Chu Feng did read a book all day today. Although learning was important, the balance between work and rest was also very important. Moreover, Chu Feng only went to the night market, not anywhere else, so he didn’t interfere and focus on it anymore.
It was just in time to take a taxi to Rong Xun's house. If it was a little later, there would probably be a traffic jam.
Chu Feng didn’t tell Rong Xun in advance, instead, he called Rong Xun when he was already downstairs at Rong Xun's house.
Rong Xun’s phone rang and he picked up without a second, and Rong Xun's pleasant voice came, “Hey, Chu Feng.”
“Well, are you free now?” Chu Feng asked. In fact, when he came over here suddenly, it was likely that Rong Xun wasn’t at home, but he just wanted to see Rong Xun. If Rong Xun wasn’t at home, he could wait.
“Yes, what's the matter?” Rong Xun asked.
Chu Feng chuckled, and the provocative voice made Rong Xun feel as his words and thoughts were at the pit of his stomach.
“I'm downstairs of your house.” Chu Feng said.
Rong Xun was silent for a moment. As Chu Feng expected, Rong Xun opened the window and looked out.
Chu Feng waved at him, and said to the phone, “Change your clothes and come down, I'll take you to dinner.”
Chu Feng’s arrival had already surprised Rong Xun. Now that he was taking him to dinner, Rong Xun couldn’t suppress the smile in his mouth, “Then wait for me.”
“Okay, no hurry.” Chu Feng said.
About five minutes later, Rong Xun had already changed his clothes and came down.
“Why did you come all of a sudden?” Rong Xun stood in front of him with a somewhat shy smile.
“I want to see you.” Chu Feng smiled. He felt very tired after reading all day today. He thought of going out to relax at night, he didn't want to ask someone else. He just wanted to find Rong Xun.
Rong Xun blushed and smiled but didn't say anything.
“Let's go and I’ll take you to the night market.” Chu Feng said.
“Okay.” Rong Xun nodded and walked away with Chu Feng.
There were many night markets in City C, and their locations were scattered. There was one not far from Rong Xun's house. It would only take 15 minutes for two people to walk there.
The types of business in the night market were very complicated. You could find everything ranging from clothes to daily use, but the mainstream was still all kinds of delicious food. The fragrance all over the street was very appetizing.
Rong Xun didn't have to eat lightly from now on, but he was afraid of eating something too greasy and his intestines and stomach couldn't stand it, so Chu Feng went to the night market first. There were many kinds to choose from and the taste was good.
As they walked into the night market, Chu Feng said, "Just say what you want. You can only go home only when you are full.”
“Okay.” Rong Xun said with a smile.
So the two began to stroll around the stalls one by one. Chu Feng would buy what he wanted or looked good. However, generally, he would only buy one and share it to eat. In this way, they could eat more varieties of food, otherwise, they would be full after eating several kinds, and might miss something good.
When the two of them were almost 70% full, Chu Feng bought two cups of milk tea with less sugar. They had one cup for each, they strolled around while drinking and shopping. The night market was getting slightly crowded as more and more people entered. Chu Feng was worried that Rong Xun would be separated from him, so he stretched out his hand and held Rong Xun's hand.
Rong Xun’s hand was a bit cold, but it was very comfortable to hold.
His hand was suddenly held while still outside, Rong Xun didn't even dare to lift his head. He blushed like a ripe tomato and looked very cute.
Chu Feng smiled but didn't say much. He continued to walk around the night market as he held his hand.
Later, when both of them were full, Chu Feng didn’t take him to the snack side but strolled around the stalls and shops to buy clothes. The clothes here are not famous brands, and the quality wasn’t that good. However, if you look carefully, you could buy good things at a particularly cheap price.
The weather was getting colder, Chu Feng bought Rong Xun a scarf that he could wear in autumn. The black, white, and gray plaid scarf wrapped around Rong Xun's neck made him look younger.
“Don't always spend money on me…” Rong Xun felt that it wasn’t good to always let Chu Feng spend money, although he was very happy that Chu Feng gave him something.
Chu Feng held his hand and continued walking forward, “You can use it, the money wasn’t used in vain.”
“That's not good either.” Rong Xun said.
“There’s nothing wrong with it, I am happy to spend money for you.” Chu Feng smiled. Now, he wasn’t making money by himself, so he was always a little restrained in using money. Once he made money in the future, he would buy better ones for Rong Xun.
Chu Feng said so, and Rong Xun had nothing to refute him. He could only be happy silently in his heart.
When he went back, Chu Feng bought some things that Rong Xun seemed to like and asked him to take them back to eat. He also bought some for Chu Rou. His mother wanted to stay in shape, so she was very particular about eating. His father didn't like these street snacks, so he didn't need to bring them.
When Rong Xun arrived downstairs, Chu Feng said, "I'll pick you up after lunch tomorrow. Let's go back to school together."
“Okay.” Rong Xun nodded obediently, his face still red.
Chu Feng looked at him and couldn't help it. He bowed his head and kissed him on the lips.
Rong Xun's face became redder, and stammered, “I... I'm going up, and you should go back quickly.”
Chu Feng smiled and pinched his face, and said, “En, go up.”
Rong Xun didn't stay too long, for fear that he would blush so much that he would faint. He quickly waved to Chu Feng and ran upstairs.
Chu Feng raised his head and watched Rong Xun's house light up. Then, as he expected, Rong Xun opened the window to see if he was still there. After seeing him, he waved to him again.
Chu Feng said, “I'm leaving. Close the window.”
“Okay.” Rong Xun answered, but didn’t close it immediately.
An empty taxi happened to pass by, and Chu Feng waved his hand to stop the taxi. He looked back at Rong Xun and said, "See you tomorrow" then he got in the car and left.
Rong Xun then closed the window and raised his hand to touch the scarf around his neck— this scarf was still a little early to wear, but the warm and hot feeling made Rong Xun’s heart feel warm, just like Chu Feng's hand, warm and made him feel at ease.
The author has something to say:
Should this count as a date? !
*
PS: I feel a little tired recently. I'll take a day off tomorrow. I won't update it. I want to have a good sleep, sort out my thoughts. I hope you forgive me.
See you the day after tomorrow!
Footnotes:
loggerheads — 针尖对麦芒, an idiomatic expression of sharply opposed to each other all day long, with neither prepared to give an inch. I just used loggerheads since it was shorter and meant in or into a state of quarrelsome disagreement which was kinda close?
irreconcilable and even half a sentence was too much — 话不投机半句多, an idiomatic expression of when views are irreconcilable, it's a waste of breath to continue discussion.
hot-headed — 三分钟热度, brief period of enthusiasm or flash in the pan.
words and thoughts were at the pit of his stomach — As much as I wanted to keep it close to original work, I just can’t since I’m using MTL. I just used 心口, meaning pit of the stomach from the 撩人的声音让容洵觉得心口一苏 in the raws. Based on what I searched, 心口 also means solar plexus or words and thoughts. So, I just made it up.
