Chapter 13: Dark Demon Stepped on a Turning Point
Friday's class schedule was quite relaxed, with only one dueling class in the morning.
Starting at noon, the passage to Traveller Street would open and remain accessible until midnight on Sunday.
During this period, every student at the academy could freely enter and exit Traveller Street.
It wasn’t just the freshmen who eagerly poured out of the castle after obtaining permissions, but also the upperclassmen who had been cooped up for the entire week.
Although Saint Marian Academy provided essential living necessities for free, any other items had to be purchased at Traveller Street.
Students were free to spend their credits on whatever they liked.
Whether it was quirky candy, toys, beautiful clothes, jewelry, or even adorable dolls, there was something for everyone.
Of course, the most common items were various magical potions and other materials needed to create magic cards.
Professors often assigned upperclassmen long-term homework that could take up to a week or even a month to complete.
The materials needed for these assignments were typically bought at the shops on Traveller Street.
Additionally, some students made potions, tools, or even semi-finished magic cards to sell at small stalls along the street.
Upperclassmen who were granted access to the dungeon could also hunt magic beasts and sell the materials they gathered to the merchants on Traveller Street.
These merchants would pay in credits as well.
At Traveller Street, one credit was worth 16 sacred coins, though this exchange rate could fluctuate with the market.
The freshmen, still in their first month, had no idea that by merely attending each class diligently, they were essentially earning 160 sacred coins!
With an average of twelve classes a week, that amounted to 7,680 sacred coins a month!
But today, Traveller Street was about to deliver a reality check to the students who weren’t paying attention in class!
---
“Dark, want to come with us?”
“No, I have something to do today.”
“Alright then, Roro and I will go ahead! I heard there’s an interesting candy store on Traveller Street. I’ve been dying to visit it!”
Dianna, linking arms with Rose, dashed out enthusiastically.
Dark shook his head. Today, he had a very specific goal in mind.
Before heading to Traveller Street, he pulled a notebook from his bag and carefully reviewed the various items he had noted down.
- Vampire Fang: The fang of a vampire, which when pierced into a vein, can calm a person. The side effect is an intense lust after the blood is drained.
- Etiquette of Humility: A demon noble’s top hat. Even the rudest person will become humble and polite when wearing it, but removing it will cause uncontrollable rage!
- The Tear of the Ocean: The tear of a beautiful mermaid, made into a potion that has slimming effects, but it actually works by inducing anorexia.
- Margaret's Red Dancing Shoes: The shoes of the mysterious witch Margaret. Wearing them enables the wearer to perform the perfect dance, but they can never be removed.
- Katerina's Poisonous Apple: An apple grown in Queen Katerina’s palace garden that absorbs jealousy and transforms it into a deadly poison, inducing eternal sleep that can only be broken by a kiss filled with love.
- Grandet’s Gold Coin: A coin that carries the legacy of Grandet. Its owner becomes miserly and greedy, valuing money above all else, even family.
- Voodoo Doll: A cursed doll created from intense jealousy. Stabbing it with pins causes unbearable pain to the person it represents.
- Pot of Abstinence: Absorbs desires and brings a state of emotional neutrality, but its side effect is a complete loss of the will to think.
- The Ring of Starry Sky: A ring from the Grand Magister of the Starry Sky that grants a glimpse of the universe, making the wearer feel insignificant to the point of breakdown.
- Nightmare Worm: A worm that burrows into dreams and feeds on human desires, but also leaves a hole in the brain as the price.
- Magic Brain Dropper: A tool that extracts small amounts of brain matter, including emotions, desires, and knowledge, often used for crafting high-level magic cards. Excessive use may lead to memory loss.
- Holy Cross: Purifies the soul, making the wearer’s thoughts pure, but erodes the brain over time.
- Requiem Bell: Ringing this bell brings a calming effect, leaving a person peaceful, even in death.
- Moon Goddess Incense: Burning this incense in a study room clears the mind and increases reading efficiency by banishing distractions.
- Wrath of God: An ancient wand that converts anger into magical flames. As long as the anger persists, the flames burn endlessly!
The entire notebook was filled with records of items Dark had come across in various books over the past month.
These items could be ancient magical tools from a previous era, or perhaps they had already been crafted into magical item cards.
Regardless, they all had effects vital for resisting the seven deadly sins.
However, as expected, nothing came without a price. Many of these items had serious side effects, making the cost hard to ignore.
At present, very few appeared to be free from side effects.
Among those, the two that Dark most desired, had manageable side effects, and were likely obtainable at Traveller Street, were the Magic Brain Dropper and the luxurious Moon Goddess Incense.
Dark speculated that Moon Goddess Incense might dangerously stimulate an insatiable thirst for knowledge—clearly risky and requiring further testing.
Thus, his goal for today was the Magic Brain Dropper!
As a tool for extracting brain matter, Magic Brain Dropper was key in the precision crafting of high-level magic cards.
Dark had researched it thoroughly, even consulting Professor Cazer, who taught Magic Theory, and was confident that it could effectively extract emotions and desires—provided one had the necessary skill and didn’t overuse it.
If he couldn’t buy it at Traveller Street, he would have to find a way to obtain one from Professor Cazer’s lab.
Though it couldn’t be used frequently, with careful moderation, it should serve as a useful emergency measure.
The most pressing issue now was drawing off some of his Pride.
---
Once the crowd of freshmen lingering at the castle gates finally dispersed, Dark leisurely strode towards the castle gate, maintaining an air of grace even in his anxious state—a hallmark of his aristocratic upbringing.
The passage to Traveller Street was located in a pavilion on the lake outside the castle.
Crossing a long, garden-style bridge, Dark arrived at the beautiful pavilion.
As usual, he took a moment to observe his surroundings.
The spacious lakeside pavilion featured a circle of stone seating around its edges, as well as eight sets of stone tables and chairs.
On the pillar directly opposite, a line of words was carved: "If we try to find, there will always be room for improvement, waiting for us somewhere."
Dark blinked and noticed someone sitting on one of the stone stools. With a slight twist of their body, they suddenly vanished.
Some others twisted and twisted, but remained firmly in place!
"It seems the entrance to the passage shifts. There are eight stone tables, each with eight stools. Only by choosing the correct eight stools can one enter Traveller Street."
Glancing over at the frustrated Robert and White, Dark calmly chose an unused stool at another table.
He waited patiently, and once the others failed, he subtly twisted his body and disappeared from sight.
