Chapter 14: Emma Mortis Wants to Try Changing
The same lake, the same pavilion in the middle of it.
But stepping out of the pavilion and crossing the garden-style bridge led to an entirely new world.
What greeted them was...
Hmm, it was the air of freedom! o(*≧▽≦)ツ┏━┓
Students no longer had to adhere to the old school rules; a single magic card from the outfit-changing series could transform them into something vibrant and colorful.
"Goodbye, school uniform!"
Dark even saw a normally stern female senior scream with excitement.
Her school uniform, which covered every important part of her body tightly, instantly transformed into a black lace dress with puffed sleeves, revealing a large portion of her shoulders and collarbones.
Meanwhile, a male senior with a bowl cut, who always appeared modest, combed a magic card through his hair as he stepped off the bridge; his bowl cut transformed into a slicked-back hairstyle instantly.
His school uniform also changed into a fitted suit that showcased his figure.
The magic card in his hand even turned into a bright red rose.
He inserted the rose into his chest pocket, walking with a swagger, no longer looking anything like his former self.
Outfit changes, fun, dates, shopping, drinking, singing, dancing...
Traveller Street felt like a fairyland completely opposite to Saint Marian, offering everything Saint Marian did not!
And to fully enjoy these pleasures, all it took was a few academic credits!
---
Although the House Cup took place every year, no one would hold back at the start of the semester in preparation for the competition at the year's end.
Moreover, there was a saying that floated around Saint Marian, though it wasn’t quite applicable to the general public—"The more you spend, the more you earn!"
Since there were indeed a few role models who followed this mindset, many people used it as an excuse to indulge in spending.
Of course, there were also those who couldn’t afford to indulge even if they wanted to!
---
When Dark explored Traveller Street and ran into White and Robert again, the two of them were just walking out of a toy store, looking dejected.
Apparently, the academic credits they had left weren’t enough to buy the toys they wanted.
Dark didn’t have much energy to care about others, so he merely glanced at them before striding off.
Thus, he missed the moment when another high-credit student, Emma Mortis, was cornered by the two underachievers.
---
Emma originally came to Traveller Street to look for some books not available in the academy library, but on the way, she spotted Dark, who seemed to be searching for something, and instinctively followed him.
However, she ended up being entangled by White and Robert.
Angry and embarrassed, Emma snapped, "So, your lack of credits isn’t your own fault? Even if a normal student hasn’t earned extra points, they should still have 480 credits. What about you two?"
White embarrassedly replied, "I’ve got 250..."
Robert’s face turned red again. "Emma, we just want to borrow 5 credits from you! It’s easy for you, isn’t it? We’ll pay you back on Monday when classes start!"
White glanced at the new magic chess set displayed in the store and couldn’t help but add, "We’re only short 5 credits!"
Looking at this classmate, who was the son of the famous Brave One, Emma suddenly felt a bit sorry for him.
Then, an idea surfaced in her mind.
Her brows furrowed again, and she suddenly said seriously, "I can lend you the credits, but you must pay me back double. And for every day you delay, the amount will double again! The second day is double the first, the third day double the second, and so on. You must pay me back in full in one go. If you agree, I’ll lend it to you, with the sorting card as proof!"
Without thinking, Robert immediately agreed, "Tomorrow, we’ll pay you 10 credits, the day after that, 20, and by Monday, 40 credits—it’s just two class periods worth of work for each of us. No problem!"
White, feeling something was off but eager to buy the magic chess set, instinctively ignored the oddness.
With the sorting card as proof, the two signed the contract and rushed into the toy store to buy the latest magic chess set that could sing, dance, and rap!
---
Meanwhile, after wandering for quite some time, Dark finally found a store specializing in magical instruments—Morgan Store.
Traveller Street was filled with all sorts of general stores, and many cheap items could be bought from any of them.
But a [Magic Brain Dropper] was a highly specialized alchemical tool, very expensive, and could only be found in specialty shops.
Dark searched for a long time before finding the Morgan Store squeezed between two jewelry shops.
He pushed open the worn wooden door and was immediately hit by the smell of decay and dampness.
"Kid, don’t mess around. You couldn’t afford to break anything here."
The one-eyed Morgan behind the counter barely lifted his eye patch to glance at Dark before concluding that he was a new student.
How many credits could a new student earn in a month?
Morgan knew this all too well.
He rudely gave an eviction notice: "The cheapest thing in this store costs a thousand credits. You freshmen can’t afford it."
Dark glanced at a set of test tubes on the shelf and suddenly asked, "Even this set of test tubes costs a thousand credits?"
"Well..."
The one-eyed Morgan was stumped by the question. After a long pause, he angrily replied, "Why wouldn’t this set of temperature-regulating magic test tubes be worth a thousand?"
Dark: "What about this beaker, this flask, and this evaporating dish?"
One-eyed Morgan slammed the counter. "That’s none of your business!"
Dark shook his head. It seemed this shop owner had a bad temper, maybe even a bit childish, or perhaps it was just one of those days.
He didn’t argue with the one-eyed Morgan anymore and started browsing the shelves.
There were test tubes and beakers; surely there had to be a dropper too, right?
"Flaming Crucible, Spirit Alcohol Lamp, Magic Separator… Ever-changing glass Rod, Magic Dropper..."
The Magic Dropper appeared to be an inferior version of the Magic Brain Dropper, capable of only absorbing a small amount of magic energy.
A dropper is a short tube with a narrow opening at one end and a rubber bulb at the other, used to measure liquid in drops.
But in magic card crafting, it was typically used to absorb magic energy, knowledge, thoughts... or even souls!
Legend had it that magisters would inject their own souls into magic cards to create magical spirits with intelligence.
The Magic Brain Dropper Dark wanted was a grade lower than the soul-absorbing dropper.
It wasn’t one of those rare, unobtainable items.
But it definitely wasn’t on the shelves!
He had no choice but to go to the counter and wake up the one-eyed Morgan, who was pretending to be asleep.
"Excuse me, sir. Do you have Magic Brain Droppers?"
Without looking up, the one-eyed Morgan asked, "What does a freshman like you need that for?"
Dark maintained his politeness. "For an experiment."
The one-eyed Morgan looked up, his expression strange, but he still said, "Wait here, I’ll check in the back."
A moment later, he returned with a Magic Brain Dropper, though its condition wasn’t great.
