Her Mountain, Her Sea 02.1 Letter Paper

After the class seating plan was switched up, a boy called Wang JiaoYang sat behind Chi Tang. He was a stereotypical problem student, coming late and playing truant and fighting. His results ranked the reciprocal fourth in the year and the hair which teachers have repeatedly asked that he change, no matter how you look, it has not one bit of change.

Before the switch when someone sat between them, he would switch seats with that student to strike up a conversation with her. Now that he was right behind, his urge to flirt with Chi Tang was even more uncontrollable. He would poke her shoulders with his pen, talk loudly by her ears and even purposely get pushed onto her when he joked with other students.

Everyone around her could tell that he has a thing for her. Chi Tang could tell too, but her only feeling towards the matter was irritation. Every time people goaded her for it, she could feel the disgust oozing out of her cold stomach.

On her way to the provision shop on campus, she ran into Wang JiaoYang and his group of friends playing ball games on the field. He came up smiling.

“Hey, Chi Tang, going to buy something? Help me get a bottle of water too.”

“Go buy one yourself if you need it that bad.”

“Our JiaoYang doesn’t need the water as much as he needs the person who’s bringing him water!” Another boy, who came running after him, laughed and teased her, making his friends laugh as well. Wang JiaoYang smiled at her and dribbled his ball, which he apparently thought looked cool. “Front desk neighbor, do me a favour, yeah?”

Can’t these boys understand a girl’s rejection? Chi Tang felt irritated most of the time, and especially at that moment. She stared at them until they all stopped laughing and told them,”I meant every word when I said ‘do it yourself’, did you think I was joking?”

It was not funny at all.

How the boys felt toward her afterward, she has heard of it. They thought she was too arrogant and too hard to talk to, and one after another, urged Wang JiaoYang to choose someone else instead. He became less enthusiastic around her, but would still attempt to flirt with her every now and then.

In the dorm the girls had chats every evening, but Chi Tang rarely joined, most of the time occupied by the music in her earphones. The dorm manager Song FangCao probably felt bad for excluding her and cued Chi Tang so she would be involved. Chi Tang always responded indifferently.

Luo Zhengli normally excluded her from the conversation, only talking to the others, making them ignore her too. This night however she initiated a conversation asking, “Wang JiaoYang likes you, right? I heard Liu Bin and the others calling you JiaoYang’s girl, are you two a thing?

Chi Tang lied on her bed with her eyes closed and replied sarcastically, “Right, his family owns the Civil Affairs Bureau, whoever asked to be married to the other must get married, and the people involved don’t even need to know.”

“Pfft,” Song FangCao could not hold it in.

“So you don’t like him? He’s pretty attractive, you are saying you don’t feel anything even after all his efforts? No way.” Luo Zhengli continued asking.

Chi Tang seriously did not find anything attractive about him, but she did hear something weird in Luo Zhengli’s tone. She glanced at her.

“If you like him just go ahead and pursue him. You don’t need to beat around the bush with me.”

Luo Zhengli’s expression changed. She threw down the cushion she held and fussed. “Who said I like him, don’t make things up.”

Chi Tang just snorted.
