Chapter 5: Eat fill is the most important

Edited by Silver B.

Chen Chao also smelt the aroma of the grilled fish, which made his mouth water. He glanced at the old man holding the dried meat. He couldn't speak the man's language and couldn't communicate with him as well.

Mainly, it was because...he was so hungry!

He thought for a while and first handed the old man a bunch of the grilled fish. The old man's eyes lit up. He swallowed it, but he waved his hand and repeated the action again, indicating that he still wanted Chen Chao's fire, not the fish.

The old man had long sheep horns on his head which showed his authority to distribute food. So he should be a figure like a witch or an elder in the tribe.

Seeing he couldn't communicate with them, Chen Chao decided to solve his hunger first. He quickly finished one fish in several large bites. But the taste of the fish was...

Damn it, there is no salt!

It was really tasteless, but fortunately, it was meaty, and the water in the river was also very clean, so after removing the internal organs and gills, there was no unpleasant smell.

Just as he was about to eat the second fish, his host Huang Yan also eagerly leaned towards the fire. Pointing to the fish on the wooden stand, he opened his mouth and said "Ah".

Chen Chao first uttered the syllables "eat, fish", and then handed over a roasted fish. Huang Yan took a bite after receiving it, but got burned by the hot fish and grimaced in pain. However, he still didn't want to spit out the hot fish meat.

After taking a bite of the fish, he turned to look at the old man holding the dried meat, then looked at Chen Chao, then reluctantly handed the grilled fish to the old man, and learned to say what Chen Chao had just said now, "Fish, Fish, ah."

In this way, a grilled fish was finished after passing for half a circle in the crowd. The rest of the people could only look at the grilled fish on the fire with eager eyes. Two of the children who hadn't eaten the fish were even drooling.

They pulled at the hands of the old people around them, trying to pull the old people to the river. Although the old people who didn’t eat it felt a pity, they had experienced more things and naturally understood the importance of this thing to the tribe better than these greedy children.

This was the river in front of his tribe!

And this thing seemed to be a lot. Maybe in the future, the tribe could not only catch prey in the woods, but old people like themselves could also find ways to catch some fish in the river. As long as there was enough food in winter they wouldn’t be abandoned!

Chen Chao handed a freshly grilled fish to Huang Yan, who looked at him eagerly, but Huang Yan took it and put it in front of his nose to smell the scent. After smelling it, he handed it to the old man behind him. Crouching down and following Chen Chao's actions, he grilled the skewered fish on the rack, turning it occasionally.

The old man with the horns originally wanted to stop him, but then he thought about it again and eventually just sighed. This little kid was very clever, and since they were all here, so he didn't stop him.

When Chen Chao saw that Huang Yan started to grill fish for himself, he was finally able to free his hands. He first showed a sincere smile, then put his hands together and put them on the side of his face, making the action of going to sleep, and then waved his hands again to tell the old man that he had no place to rest and if he could live in their tribe.

Sure enough, although his message wasn't clear to them, the smiles between humans had magical ability. Coupled with the grilled fish, the old people in the tribe gradually put aside their defenses against him, but they still didn’t agree to it. They just said they couldn’t decide, and they had to wait for the leader to return.

They were both happy and afraid of Chen Chao's arrival, but what they felt more was joy, mainly because Chen Chao could catch fish and make the holy fire. These were the things they didn't have, and this was also a man in his prime!

If one more person joined the foot hunting, it meant that there would be more food for the winter.

In their cognition, there were many wild men who were driven out by the tribe to live alone. The tribe had taken in two or three in the past, so they didn't doubt Chen Chao's identity.

The fear mainly came from unfamiliarity, and it basically appeared in the elder people. After all, the men in the entire tribe were out hunting, and there were only old people and a few children in the tribe; such a strong man, if he wanted to take food from them, they would not be able to stop him at all.

The innocent children, led by Huang Yan, had surrounded Chen Chao.

Before the sun set, there was a sparse sound of footsteps and the laughter of men and women coming from the woods. What appeared first were the women holding the fruits wrapped in animal skins and then the man carrying the prey.

Of course, there were already animal skin clothes at this time, but compared to covering their private parts, primitive people still thought that the storage and carrying functions of animal skins were more important.

Moreover, the autumn temperature here was not that low. Without the need to keep out the cold, the animal skins in the tribe were naturally taken to carry the collected fruits.

But the only exception was the leader of the tribe, his waist was wrapped in a piece of animal skin.

When the men came back and saw the children gathered together, they all felt relieved, but suddenly they saw a stranger and were startled. Just when they were about to put on a defensive posture, the old man with sheep horn took a grilled fish and came forward to explain to the leader wrapped in animal skins.

The leader took the grilled fish from the old man's horns and tasted it. Although it was a bit cold, it was edible and delicious to them, much like the cooked meat that they had tasted in that Fire Tribe before.

The leader had asked the Fire Tribe before and was even willing to give the meat of two wild beasts so that he could earn the method of obtaining the holy fire. But the Fire Tribe was very cautious every time when making fire and did not allow others to watch it or take the fire away at all. Taking the fire away would be similar to opposing their entire tribe, and would be punished by the god of fire.

Then the two people communicated in native dialect for a while making hand gestures. The old man took them to the river excitedly. First, he pointed to the river, indicating that the fish was caught from the river, and then let the leader watch the small campfire.

The leader's face also lit up. He first looked at the fire carefully and wanted to squat down to touch it, but he was burned as soon as his hand touched the flame, but even so, he was still very excited.

He has seen fire and has eaten cooked meat before. Naturally, he knew that cooked meat was better than the dried or raw meat that he usually ate in his tribe. It was just that the fire was too difficult to obtain and preserve. He could only eat cooked meat when there was a mountain fire. It was not that he had never tried to bring the fire back, but, alas...

Thinking of this, he looked at the burly man sitting by the fire, with hope and desire in his eyes. They really needed the holy fire in the tribe.
