Chapter 06 The Medicine Cat (Part 2/3)
Ling
Qiyang lowered his head and fell silent. As he felt the warm and smooth satin
on his back, he clearly felt Jun Lixuan's love and intentions. A subtle curl
raised on the corners of his lips.
That
afternoon, the two of them sat in the warmed living room and read their own
books. Occasionally, the sound of page-turning dotted the quiet tranquillity.
Within the room, an air of peacefulness and serenity lingered.
After
blinking his tired eyes, Ling Qiyang raised his eyes to look at Jun Lixuan. He
found the man staring mindlessly at the book with dazed, blank eyes. Most
likely, he was not even sure of the book's contents.
"What's
the matter?" Ling Qiyang put down the book and asked.
Jun
Lixuan stretched out his hand and hugged Ling Qiyang closely. With a hint of panic
in his voice, he said, "We could solve the mystery of Emperor
Father's constant sleep paralysis with your help. But I still think its best to
put in some preventive measures. Although Empress Mother's life was not
threatened this time, its hard to guarantee that it won't happen next time.
While proactive guarding ourselves behind the scenes is effective now, it
is not a long-term solution. We need to think of some way to protect Empress
Mother."
As a
child, parents' health was naturally of utmost concern. A child's peace of mind
could only be attained when his parents were safe and healthy. Due to the royal
family's hierarchal structure, rules and image constrained the closeness
between parent and children, their interactions were also unusual less casual.
Amongst the princes, ambitious and selfish characters were present in all
dynasties. These people only had eyes for the throne, to rule above the ten
thousands of people. Even if they were filial, they were just acting. Facing
such people, even if they were royals, Ling Qiyang had no respect for them.
On the
other hand, Jun Lixuan's worry and filial piety came from the heart. Although
he was economical with his words, his actions proved to Ling Qiyang that he was
a pure-hearted and considerate son. Even though Jun Lixuan was cold-blooded and
ruthless on the battlefield, his loving care as a son and husband at home was
undoubtedly genuine.
"I
really have no idea. Tomorrow, I, together with Sixth Brother, will visit Third
Brother. I will let them know about the incense, and think of a way
together." Jun Lixuan grew up in the palace. The concubines’ underhanded
strategies in fights for the Emperor’s favour were common knowledge. However,
he had never used it himself. Hence, he momentarily could not think of a
perfect countermeasure. There were no shortages of methods to test for poison
in Serene Palace. Still, unconventional toxins like incense were not easy to
detect. While it was not life-threatening, its intangibility and tracelessness
were big trouble.
If its
prevention did not work, they could only cut the problem at its root and remove
the Imperial Noble Consort. Alas, how could it be easy? The Imperial Noble
Consort comes from the lineage of well-known warriors and wielded massive military
power. Besides, she gave birth to the Fifth Prince and raised the Fourth
Prince. The Emperor had to consider many factors even if she had a severe
offence. Furthermore, even if the Imperial Noble Consort was eliminated, they could not guarantee that a similar incident would not occur in the future.”
Ling
Qiyang sniffed the faint fragrance of the fragrance sachet on Jun Lixuan's body and
whispered, "Actually, it's not impossible."
"Do
you have a method?" Jun Lixuan looked at him. Although he knew Ling Qiyang
was proficient in medicine, he did not expect him to figure out a solution.
Ling
Qiyang got out of bed, went to the table. He picked up the brush, soaked it in
ink, and started writing on the paper. After writing it, he folded it and put
it in an envelope. On the top, it was labelled, "to Father".
Jun
Lixuan watched in befuddlement. He leaned closer and he saw the words on the envelope. Ling Qiyang 's handwriting was very refined. Suddenly, a thought
sprouted in his mind, In the future, our child can learn calligraphy from
Father. As that
happy thought circled his mind, a blissful smile subtly emerged on his face. He
had no intentions to force Ling Qiyang to bear his child. However, he also
thought it would be nice if they had their own children. Still, he kept this
thought to himself. Omega had difficulty getting pregnant, and he didn't want
to put pressure on Ling Qiyang.
After
sealing the letter, Ling Qiyang gestured Ming Li, waiting at the door. He
handed him the letter along with his personal jade pendant, "Send these
two things to Count Wangyang's mansion and give them to my father."
"Yes."
Ming Li took the items with both hands and ran out. Although he was Jun
Lixuan's personal attendant, he clearly understood who had the final say in
this manor after the marriage of his master. Even if the Prince Consort's
orders were not directly from the Prince, it would undoubtedly benefit the
Prince.
"What
did you write?" Ming Li left with the letter hurriedly, not even greeting
his actual Master by the side. Jun Lixuan was a little disappointed, he had initially
wanted to look at Ling Qiyang's handwriting.
"You'll
know in a while." Ling Qiyang smiled secretively and returned to the couch
to continue reading.
Jun
Lixuan smiled helplessly and followed along.
