06 The Medicine Cat (Part 1/3)
The
palace was bustling with activity during the twelfth month. In the Ye Empire,
New Year's Eve was a big celebration, and every household poured in money to
welcome the New Year with a bang. Ling Qiyang had always spent the little money
that his father saved from his frugal lifestyle to buy new things in previous
years. This year, after he married into His Royal Highness Ling Manor, he no
longer worried about the family affairs. Alas, deep down, he inevitably missed
his father.
Today
was the twenty-eighth, and the palace was due to begin the long break to
prepare for the New Year. Early in the morning, Jun Lixuan left for the last
morning assembly of the year. He had arranged to have breakfast with the Third
and Sixth Prince after the meeting and only returned at noon. During this alone
time, Ling Qiyang was idle. He sat in front of the large porcelain tank and fed
the fishes. When the weather was warm, these fish were kept in the pond in the
mansion. When winter arrived, they were scooped up and put in these tanks and
kept in the house. Otherwise, the poor fishes would freeze to death annually,
and new fishes had to be bought. If that happened, the supposedly auspicious
koi fishes seemed to be sending a grim blessing for the household.
There
was no peace and quiet for Ling Qiyang. Ming Li and Luo Su came in, again and
again, to ask for his opinions. As the Prince Consort, he oversaw the New
Year's affairs, leaving him no time to think about his father. Fortunately,
this kept his sentimental thoughts at bay. Seeing
that the feeding was almost done, Ling Qiyang placed the food container aside.
"Prince
Consort." Luo Su smiled and walked in quickly.
"What's
the matter?" Jun Lixuan had appointed Luo Su to handle all the
arrangements for the New Year. While he did not need to personally attend to
these matters, he was still frequently consulted for his opinions on many
things.
Luo Su
chuckled lightly and said, "Your clothes have arrived." He gestured to
the attendants waiting by the door. They filed in with a stack of clothes in
their hands. Instantly, a flood of red satin swarmed the courtyard.
"What’s
with these clothes?" New Year's clothes were made and delivered the day
before yesterday. He did not remember placing another order. Furthermore, even
if he did, he would not order them to be so red. These clothes were more
scintillating than his wedding robes.
"Prince
Consort, these are what Your Highness ordered. There are more than one hundred
sets, all of which are winter clothes. He said that you can alternate within
them." Luo Su smiled even more brightly.
Ling
Qiyang was bamboozled, "What am I to do with so many winter clothes?"
"That,
I am not too sure. On the third day of the wedding, Your Highness ordered them.
The Needlework Bureau and the first-rate clothing store outside the palace
burnt several midnights oil to make it in time."
Most of Ling Qiyang's
clothes were light-coloured and conservative. However, when Jun Lixuan saw Ling
Qiyang, clad in the gorgeous wedding robes, he felt that his Prince Consort
looked more beautiful in bright colours. “Leave
them there." Ling Qiyang pointed to the table.
Hearing
that, the attendants arranged the robes on the tables. Soon, piles after piles
of blinding scarlet satin built up in a seemingly awkward fashion. Just as Luo
Su was about to put the clothes into the closet, Jun Lixuan walked in. "Oh?
They have been delivered?" Jun Lixuan walked to the table and looked
through the clothes. He nodded happily, "Good job, reward them."
"Yes."
Luo Su acknowledged the instructions. Then, he retired from the courtyard with
the other people, giving the couple their privacy.
Ling
Qiyang got up, walked over and asked, "Why do you make so many sets of
clothes. I can't wear them all. And they are all red. It's strange to go out
clad in red."
While
there were people dressed in red, no one wore such a vibrant and eye-catching
red. Alas, Jun Lixuan chosen fabric with brilliant washes of red and too
conspicuous hues.
"It's
okay. If you don't want to wear it out, just wear it in the manor. Wear them
just for me." Jun Lixuan spread open a coat and put it on Ling Qiyang.
After scanning the sizes and fitting, he found the robes very suitable.
"You look fantastic in red. Very elegant and charming. I made this for you
to constantly remember the moment you walked off the bridal carriage. It will remind
me of my heart skipping a beat as your entrancing figure watching me in the
bridal chambers."
Jun
Lixuan stared lovingly at Ling Qiyang. Within his bottomless gaze, the memories
of his past life's regrets came flooding back in. Jun Lixuan could not tell
Ling Qiyang that he made these red clothes to remember Ling Qiyang's sacrifices
