She could see a familiar little black cat, two stray dogs running and playing happily. There was also a woman pushing a stroller as she walked along the stone trail, and an aunt carrying eggs and vegetables while returning. The little girl was wearing a small floral skirt with her hair in a braid who fell to the ground and started crying. Her brother came over and helped her pat the dust off with a smile.

He Xing saw the same scenarios as yesterday but she couldn’t identify any suspicious people among them.

However, she still didn’t dare to sit on the cursed bench again.

Today, she had already repeated many of the same scenes as yesterday.

She was murdered yesterday.

He Xing, who would definitely be annihilated today, slid down slowly along the wall and then squatted there, shrinking herself into a small ball. She closed her eyes, trying to recall the last face she saw, but she simply couldn’t recognize it distinctly. The more she thought about it, the more afraid she became. Her shoulders trembled slightly.

He Xing took out her mobile and called her mother. “Mom, I forgot my key. When will you come back?”

Her mother said, “How can you forget to bring the keys? Don’t I remind you every day? Xiao Xing, you’re already so big and still so careless, what will you do when you get married and start a family in the future?……..“

Her mother’s tirade went on for a thousand more words or so. He Xing bravely kept listening and found out that it’d take at least two hours for her mother to return. Even though the wind was hot in the summer evening, she didn’t want to stand outside for two hours by herself. He Xing endearingly asked her mother, “Where are you having dinner? Can I also join?”

Her mother spoke in a mild tone but refused without hesitation. “No.”

He Xing heard her dad’s voice from the other side of the phone. “Darling, I’ve sliced this steak for you.”

Her mother’s voice instantly switched to that of a youthful girl, sounding sweet and coquettish. “Honey, you are so kind.”

Her dad became more cheerful and asked praisingly, “Have a taste and see whether I’ve sliced it deliciously or not.”

“...” He Xing was speechless.

What did the taste of steak have to do with who cut it? This old married couple was excessively affectionate to the point that it was nauseating.

Her mother was obviously eager to hang up the phone and go to eat the steak her husband had lovingly sliced for her. She patiently tried to persuade her daughter. “Xiao Xing, your parents rarely get to spend time alone together. What is wrong with you? You go out and have a bowl of noodles for now, and wait for your parents to come back home. Be good.“

He Xing. “Oh”

The phone was hung up.

The wind rustled the bushes, and the slightest sound scared her like a bird that startles at the mere sight of a bow.*

[TL NOTE―惊弓之鸟 lit. a bird startled by the mere twang of a bow (idiom); fig. sb who frightens easily, due to past experiences; badly frightened person。]

He Xing didn’t dare to stay here anymore. If she changed her location, she might be able to avoid the misfortune.

He Xing suddenly remembered Qin Xingli.

At this point, she had already realized that she hadn’t dreamt up what happened with Qin Xingli last night. She met the murderer while waiting for him in the compound.

He Xing didn’t have Qin Xingli’s private mobile number, but she knew that Qin Xingli lived on the fifth floor. He Xing remembered Qin Xingli had noticed her when he was going downstairs to buy some things last night. She looked at the time on her mobile and judged that Qin Xingli should be at home at this time. He Xing decided to take the initiative to knock Qin Xingli’s door and ask him to take her in for two hours. Forget the fried rice with eggs or whatever. Moreover, there were no ingredients at his place, so she might as well order takeout directly.

He Xing tiptoed towards the unit building, holding the phone tightly in her hand.

It was getting darker. All the lights in the compound were on, making her shadow stretch greatly.

She had just walked into the corridor when someone suddenly rushed in from behind and strangled her neck.

He Xing was stunned. Her mind went blank, and the pain of suffocation made her burst into tears.

Before she lost consciousness, she had only one thought:

Damn it, I still didn’t see this guy’s face.
