Teacher Zhang took out a stack of papers and said with a smile, “Let’s have a quiz today. The score will be considered for your final grade.” The whole classroom broke into a chorus of exhausted sighs and groans. The class monitor handed out the papers to everyone. He Xing glanced at the papers.

What the hell?

Weren’t these exam papers already handed out yesterday? The foreboding premonition was like a green seedling suddenly growing into a towering tree, blocking the sun from her heart.

He Xing slowly turned to look at Xia Xiyan, and asked with a shaky voice, “What day is it today?”

“Thursday.” Xia Xiyan looked at her in surprise. “Xiao Xing, what’s wrong with you?”

He Xing’s heart was about to burst. She remembered that yesterday was Thursday, so all the books she brought today were for Friday’s classes. He Xing couldn’t believe what Xia Xiyan said, but she had no choice but to accept it. Everything that had happened today overlapped with yesterday. He Xing took out her phone and looked at the calendar. It was indeed Thursday.

Xia Xiyan looked at He Xing’s pale face. Her entire forehead was dotted with cold sweat. Xia Xiyan had a worried look on her beautiful face as she whispered, “Xiao Xing, are you sick? Why don’t you take the day off and go to the infirmary?”

He Xing returned to her senses. She wiped the sweat from her forehead, and smiled at Xia Xiyan saying, “I’m fine”

Although she seemed calm and composed, tremendously erratic waves were forming in her heart.

Did she repeat Thursday? She had always been a pragmatic person, How could she not believe that such a ridiculous thing actually happened when the papers sitting on her desk were clear evidence? So that wasn’t a nightmare at all. Someone did try to kill her last night. But she didn’t die. She went back to the day when she confessed her love to Jiang Yingjing. The more she thought about it, the more terrified she became. In a quiet classroom, she could almost listen to her own heartbeat.

Teacher Zhang came over and flicked He Xing’s desk with her forefinger: “Why haven’t you answered a single question yet?”

He Xing recovered and shook her head. “No, uh, I’m still thinking.”

Not a single answer.

What a joke!

She wrote the same test paper yesterday.

He Xing decided not to think about anything else. She would finish this test first.

He Xing confidently held her pen and looked at the clean test paper. The dense dot-like words were flying here and there in front of her eyes, as if they had grown wings, disrupting her thoughts. He Xing was silent for a few minutes, before suddenly collapsing over the table with dismay.

Although she had seen the same problems yesterday.

But she still couldn’t… She just couldn’t.

It was the same day, the dullest and most chaotic day she had ever spent.

When the dusk was seeping into nightfall, He Xing stood on the rooftop, staring at Jiang Yingjing stupidly.

The pink envelope in his hand was the love letter that she had slipped into his school bag on Wednesday.

He looked at her expressionlessly, and asked her in a desolate tone, “What did you want to talk about when you asked to meet me?”

He Xing’s heart was beating really fast. She had already met Jiang Yingjing yesterday. Yet, just as before, she blushed, not daring to glance at him. Besides, she already knew what would happen, so why should she go through with it again? It was too torturous.

Jiang Yingjing frowned and suddenly took a step forward. He was just a stone’s throw away from He Xing.

His beautiful face suddenly appeared right in front of her eyes. Looking into his eyes was like looking at vivid landscapes of lakes and mountains, beautiful enough to intoxicate anyone who simply looked at them.

He Xing stood there, with her heart beating like crazy. Her chin was trembling, and the words that she wanted to say refused to escape her lips.

Jiang Yingjing lowered his voice, sounding rather magnetic. “Is there something wrong?”

He Xing’s clenched her trembling hands into a fist.

She ended up repeating the same mistake even though she had already foreseen the results.

“Hi, my name is He Xing. I handed you the bottle of water when you were playing basketball today.”

As she said this, she suddenly came to her senses. Today, she was absent-minded all day. She didn’t go to see Jiang Yingjing play at all. She hastily corrected herself: “No, I gave you the bottle yesterday. Wait no, it was neither yesterday nor today.”

“…”

The expression on Jiang Yingjing’s face seemed to be saying: ‘I seem to have run into a fool.’

He Xing couldn’t wait to dig a hole and burrow herself into it. At least, there wouldn’t be any need to face such an embarrassing scene again.

She plucked up her courage and looked up at him with a faint expectation in her eyes. “Do you remember me?”

Jiang Yingjing looked at her red face seriously. After a few seconds, he said honestly: “No.”

He Xing: “Goodbye.”

What else could she say? She already knew his answer.

He Xing turned and walked to the gate of the rooftop quickly. Her footsteps were clumsy, looking as if she was drunk.

She knew already that it would be like this so she had prepared herself mentally, but she still felt very stuffy.

He Xing carried her school bag and walked along the noisy street. The bustling of her surroundings turned into a low hum and seemed to disappear from her ears.

She frowned and kicked off a roadside pebble. The stone tumbled down the sewer.

What happened today was really unbelievable. He Xing had arrived home but her thoughts were still a mess. Once again, she found out that her keys were lost. She had completely forgotten about it, and couldn’t remember where she lost them.

He Xing stood dejectedly in the compound with her long hair blowing in the hot summer wind.

Under the leafy banyan tree, she could see the empty bench with mottled shadows swaying on its surface. Cold sweat seeped out of He Xing’s palm as she suddenly remembered the last thing that had happened last night,

What happened in the end yesterday?

Did someone really want to kill her?

There must be a misunderstanding.

Or maybe she was really unfortunate and met some vicious serial killer.

Her heart was beating like a drum, drowning out the sound of the wind and all other subtle noises around her.

He Xing retreated step by step, leaning back against the cold stone wall.

She opened her eyes wide and looked around, not letting even the rustle of leaves in the wind slip past her ears.*
