Chapter 446: Dark Demon and the House Cup

After both duelists had gathered their magic cards, they stepped down from the arena. White was greeted by Robert’s consoling gaze that seemed to say, “You really didn’t last a single turn.” Meanwhile, Dark simply returned to his original position without any fanfare. The duel assessment continued.

Although participants could technically leave the venue after this round, no one did so—naturally. It wasn’t until the sky outside dimmed that the two consecutive rounds of duel assessments finally concluded. Professor Jones gave positive feedback on the first-year students’ performance before announcing dismissal.

“It’s finally over!”

“Wonder how many points I’ll get this time?”

“It shouldn’t be too low; we’ve worked so hard after all.”

“That’s right—at least we weren’t one-turn KO’d.”

“Hey, isn’t tomorrow morning the House Cup duel competition? I kind of want to watch it.”

“But then comes the final written exams on Monday!”

“Heh, which is more important—exams or duels?”

“No need to ask—it’s obviously… exams!”

Students always appeared rational when discussing things seriously, but once emotions took over, logic went out the window. Saint Marian’s House Cup Competition was an incredibly famous event, nearly impossible to attend without tickets. Every year, countless spectators flocked to watch the matches, driving ticket prices through the roof. Thankfully, parents of students enjoyed privileges—they could obtain free tickets from regional branches based on their identity. Though non-transferable, these tickets provided convenience, and few parents would consider selling them anyway.

In this era where magisters held increasingly prestigious positions, families fortunate enough to have children admitted into Saint Marian Academy quickly rose in wealth—even if they weren’t originally affluent.

---

After leaving Dueling Hall No. 1, Dark’s trio headed to Traveller Street and reserved a spot at the Waltz Music Restaurant to celebrate the end of the practical assessments. With four practical exams completed, all three performed above the passing line. Even though Professor Thompson’s Potions and Professor Cazer’s Magic Theory practicals were challenging, causing Rose and Dianna some difficulty, they still managed decent results compared to others. Passing was virtually guaranteed.

As for the upcoming theoretical exams from Monday to Wednesday—six subjects in total—the most difficult Arithmetic exam happened to be their strong suit. As long as they reviewed diligently, the other five wouldn’t pose much trouble either. Thus, there was plenty of time to enjoy Saturday’s House Cup Competition.

Over dinner, the three chatted happily, eagerly anticipating tomorrow’s duels. Especially Dark—today’s assessment had sparked his interest but left him unsatisfied. Both Justin and White fell far short of his expectations.

“Second year… just wait till second year!” By then, most school activities would be unrestricted, offering numerous stages to compete against upperclassmen. Only then would the richer side of academy life truly unfold.

While looking forward to the future, Dark couldn’t help but observe the eating habits of the two girls. Dianna ate heartily as usual, unbothered by etiquette, occasionally licking her lips with her pink little tongue. Rose, on the other hand, maintained a reserved demeanor, though she couldn’t hide her cravings when faced with favorite dishes. Despite her young age, she already seemed conscious of maintaining her figure, restraining herself from indulging fully.

Seeing a bit of himself reflected in her, Dark smiled knowingly. Rose noticed his gaze, instinctively blushed, and touched her cheeks to check for smudges. Finding none, she looked puzzled. Dark quickly lowered his head to focus on his food, lest he be mistaken for a pervert.

---

The next morning, Saturday. Dark met up with the two girls in the common room before heading together to the outdoor dueling arena. As expected, the circular stands were packed with people—students from every year had turned out. First-years, who earlier claimed they needed to study, were now seated among the audience without exception.

Noble House, Knight House, Magister House, and Fool House divided the stands into four sections, each adorned with banners and colorful flags. Students prepared to cheer for their respective houses. When Dark arrived late, he, Dianna, and Rose made their way toward Noble House’s section, only to find first-years occupying the back rows. Doron spotted them first and waved enthusiastically.

“Hey, Dark! I thought you weren’t coming!”

“How could I miss this?” Dark chuckled, taking a seat behind Doron. The entire row was empty, perfectly accommodating the three of them.

“So, what’s up, Doron? What time does it start?” Dianna leaned forward, her face brimming with innocent curiosity.

“Of course, eight o’clock,” Doron replied. “This duel competition is crucial for us—it determines whether our house wins the House Cup and earns a wish opportunity. Everything depends on our seniors!”

Dianna nodded vigorously. “Ohhh!”

Doron suddenly pulled out a stick-like object and waved it at them. “Look, what’s this?”

Dark played along. “What is it?”

“It’s a sparkler!” Doron exclaimed. “When Noble House wins, I’ll spin this, and then… bang!” He dramatically spread his hands, clearly excited. Dark couldn’t help but laugh.

---

At exactly eight o’clock, the bell tolled from the Spiral Clock Tower, its sound echoing softly. Spatial ripples resembling waves rippled across the external spectator stands, and projections of viewers from various regional branches began appearing in batches. The House Cup duel competition was not only a showcase of student talent but also a platform to uphold Saint Marin Academy’s reputation.

Among the attendees were not only parents and regular spectators but also notable figures from all walks of life. As the world’s largest producer of magisters, Saint Marian graduates consistently set industry trends. The students representing each house in the duel competition were undoubtedly the top talents of their respective years—most likely the top-ranked, or at the very least, the second-ranked. Especially the four students representing the sixth year—they were undoubtedly figures worthy of attention. One could say that keeping track of their movements was akin to grasping the direction of the times. Thus, this year’s House Cup was unprecedented in scale.

Of course, fanbases for individual students were immense. The moment spatial hubs connected, thunderous cheers erupted from the stands. Supporters of different students were clearly divided. One particularly eye-catching group waved silver dragon banners—clearly rooting for [Silver Dragon Maiden], who would represent Magister House’s fourth year!

---

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Saint Marian Dueling Arena!” Judy, once again hosting the event, appeared center stage amidst fluttering petals and flashing lights. Today, she wore a form-fitting magical robe, her light brown curls tied high, revealing an elegant neck that enhanced her mature beauty. Before the contestants entered, she was undoubtedly the brightest flower in the room. Her devoted fans erupted in cheers louder than anyone else’s.

---

From the stands, Dark gazed at the radiant Judy and asked casually, “Come to think of it, what’s Judy’s real name?”

He directed the question at Doron in front, but Dianna beside him chimed in brightly, “Dark, doesn’t Judy look gorgeous?”

Dark nodded. “She does. But in a few years, Dianna will definitely surpass her.”

Dianna giggled. “Hehe.”

Dark pressed further. “But which house and year is Judy from? Thinking about it, she’s never mentioned it.”

Dianna tilted her head. “Well… definitely not Noble House!”

“True,” Dark agreed. “If she were, we’d remember.”

Rose added curiously, “I don’t recall hearing her full name either. Which house is she from?”

The three exchanged glances, realizing they’d stumbled upon a mystery. Solving it wouldn’t be hard, but sometimes leaving mysteries unsolved added charm.

Suddenly, a booming fanfare drew Dark’s attention back to the stage. A magically conjured band played the famous anthem Huskar’s Last Moments, shifting the atmosphere to solemnity. Under Judy’s guidance, twenty contestants—five from each house across four years—emerged onto the stage. Each wore formal uniforms, adorned with house insignias and duel badges, meticulously styled for the occasion.

Girls looked exquisite, boys handsome. Divided into groups of five, they stood from left to right. Judy introduced each contestant briefly. Dark listened closely, recognizing a few familiar names:

First, Pandora Doragon of Magister House—a rising star and designated top of the fourth-year class. Next, Winnie Skadi, also of Magister House, previously eliminated unexpectedly by third-year Tom Nixon during the Easter Duel Festival. This time, however, her expression exuded seriousness.

Fool House’s third-year representative wasn’t Tom Nixon, nor was Noble House’s second-year rep Elvis Kevin or Mary Bond. Knight House’s fifth-year rep remained [Night Baron] Noah Sharp, while Fool House’s fifth-year rep wasn’t [Dragon-Slaying Warrior] Luke Bech.

Curious, Dark observed the unfamiliar faces until he noticed Pandora locking eyes with him. Smiling, he waved enthusiastically. Dianna and Rose exchanged glances and joined in, cheering loudly for Pandora. Doron turned around, bewildered. “How can you cheer for Magister House? They’re our biggest rivals this year!”

Dianna dismissed him with an exaggeratedly mature tone. “You don’t understand. We’re friends with Senior Pandora. If she wins, we’re happy. If she loses, we’re still happy. Win-win!”

Rose giggled. “Sounds like the secret to eternal smiles.”

Doron muttered something about women being incomprehensible and turned back grumpily.

Dark stifled laughter.

---

The House Cup duel officially began around nine o’clock. Following standard rules, each house fielded five contestants who would face off against the other three houses. Each victory awarded the winning house 10,000 temporary points.

Six rounds of duels ensued, with five matches per round. Afterward came the cross-year challenge phase, where contestants could challenge upperclassmen from other houses.

Winners earned bonus points based on the year difference—one extra 10,000 per year surpassed. The house with the highest cumulative score would receive a 100,000-point bonus, factored into the final House Cup tally.

---

After introductions, contestants exited the stage. Judy activated a magic card, summoning symbols of the four houses: a crown, a lance, a grimoire, and the Tarot card [The Fool].

Arranging them in a circle, she spun a central pointer twice. It landed on the crown and the grimoire—meaning Noble House vs. Magister House in the opening match!

The clash between the two highest-scoring houses ignited immediate tension. Cheers erupted as rivalries flared. Captains of both sides raised banners, rallying supporters below. Onstage, representatives of Noble House and Magister House took their positions, ready to duel.
