Chapter 436: Dark Demon Deconstructs the Deadly Sins

Returning to his dorm, Dark looked at the Moon Goddess version of Lust still stored in his Bottle of Thoughts and scratched his head.

Initially, he planned to store this Moon Goddess version of Lust in his Worm Tree, but the Worm Tree only had eight branches. Though each branch was well-developed under his care and could hold up to three drops of deadly sin essence, this only allowed for a total storage of twenty-four drops.

Currently, Dark had six points of Pride and one point of Greed, which was concentrated and equivalent to about five points. However, because different deadly sins couldn't be mixed, he needed three branches of the Worm Tree to store them. This left only five branches available for the Moon Goddess version of Lust, meaning he could store up to fifteen drops. Consequently, he still had forty-five drops left over.

To store these remaining drops, Dark borrowed an extra Bottle of Thoughts from Professor Cazer when he returned the previous set of test tubes. However, both bottles were reaching their limits, and if he didn't use them soon, the Lust would dissipate. Thus, he decided to make full use of it tonight.

Normally, when refining a magic card with the Moon Goddess version of Lust, it tended to go out of control. To stabilize it, Dark would use some of his own Lust since the two share a common origin, reducing the likelihood of conflict. Unfortunately, Dark now only had the Moon Goddess version left, and his Lust indicator was currently at 80 points—insufficient for the "Dragonfly Touching Water" method of extraction.

If necessary, he might have to mix in another deadly sin. But before that, he wanted to conduct an experiment with the elementary Soulless Curse.

"System, display the indicators," Dark commanded.

In a moment, seven indicators appeared before his eyes:

▼
[Pride: 95]
[Envy: 39]
[Wrath: 82]
[Sloth: 69]
[Greed: 95]
[Gluttony: 73]
[Lust: 80]

Compared to the start of last month, there was a significant decrease in all deadly sins, especially Lust, which dropped to 80 points—making it unusable. Both Pride and Greed were stabilized at 95 points, also preventing extraction using the "Dragonfly Touching Water" method.

Luckily, the Soulless Curse had a breakthrough; otherwise, he'd have to look for ways to increase his deadly sins again.

"I wonder if this time I can lower the safe extraction threshold to 80 points," Dark mused. "If so, I won't have to take any risks. Just a slight increase of one or two points in Lust would suffice."

"Let's try it," he decided.

"DemiDevimon!"

DemiDevimon hopped down from above, wiggling its tiny hips.

"This time, we're testing the safety of the Soulless Curse," Dark explained.

DemiDevimon squinted, recalling the last test with the entry-level Soulless Curse. It patted its belly with its wing and confidently said, "No Problemo!"

Dark chuckled and cast the simplified incantation of the Soulless Curse. About a minute later, he pointed his magic energy pen at DemiDevimon’s forehead.

"Soulless Curse!"

A beam of light shot out, hitting DemiDevimon, making it dazed but still standing upright.

Dark observed closely and thought, "This elementary Soulless Curse is indeed stronger than the entry-level version. Even after Professor Harvey’s improvement, it still causes mild disorientation—an undesirable side effect."

This mild disorientation could be dangerous when extracting deadly sins using a magic brain dropper. If a more severe case of disorientation occurs, the consequences could be dire.

This elementary-level "Soulless Curse" only caused a very mild "disorientation" effect, but what if it were at an intermediate or advanced level?

This would mean that if Professor Harvey's improvements had indeed reached their limit, then intermediate or advanced versions of the "Soulless Curse" likely would no longer be used to lower the baseline for safely extracting the "Deadly Sins."

Dark recorded his findings and then used a Card of Happiness on DemiDevimon. DemiDevimon appeared more enchanted compared to when it wasn’t affected by the Soulless Curse, but there were no additional side effects.

After contemplating for a while, Dark decided to test it on himself. Without employing spiritual concentration art for assistance, he aimed to purely evaluate the effect of the basic Soulless Curse.

"Soulless Curse!" He steadied himself slightly and cast the elementary-level Soulless Curse on his own temple.

At that moment, he felt a slight tremor in his mind, with his thoughts scattering. He focused intently, clenching his teeth to maintain concentration, and after a short struggle, he managed to endure it.

"It seems repeated usage could actually train mental resilience," he mused, shaking his head slightly. Taking advantage of the lingering effects, he picked up the magic brain dropper from the experiment table and closed his eyes to sense his emotions.

First, he chose Pride, which was already at 95 points. As he stimulated the emotion, he felt traces of it seeping out but refrained from extracting it, merely sensing its flow.

"It seems to seep out around five points," he noted with a frown. "So the safe threshold is only reduced to 90 points?"

Next, he attempted to extract Lust, but despite all his efforts to stimulate it, the 80-point Lust remained stable and did not overflow. After three minutes, he gave up and stopped trying. By now, he was quite certain that this elementary-level Soulless Curse could only lower the safe extraction threshold to 90 points and could not be pushed any further.

Given his situation, this meant he could extract from either Pride or Greed, and he chose Pride without hesitation.

After a half-hour rest, Dark combined the Soulless Curse with spiritual concentration art, successfully extracting one drop of Pride. Now he had one drop of Pride and one point of Greed stored.

His experiments had two focuses: cultivating the Fruit of Pride and refining Lust III: Moon.

“I shall start with the easy one first.” Taking a deep breath, Dark took the materials he had prepared beforehand and began refining Lust III: Moon.

At the very beginning of the experiment, he had already prepared himself for failure. After all, the so-called Seven Deadly Sins each possessed unique properties and characteristics. In particular, Pride and Lust, representing the sun and the moon, light and darkness, were entirely opposing forces. Simply combining them would likely lead to conflict.

As for Greed and Lust, they did have a certain degree of compatibility. At least on an emotional level, there wasn’t much inherent conflict between them.

In fact, Dark had long wanted to experiment with combining different Deadly Sins, but his demand for them was high, so he never had any extra to spare.

This time, though forced by circumstances, he finally had an opportunity.

Using 1 point of Greed and 30 points of the Moon Goddess version of Lust as the main ingredients, he intended to test a few theories.

Once everything was ready, Dark placed a blank magic card in the center of the table and immediately began the crafting process.

His skill in crafting Deadly Sin cards was now so advanced that he had no fear of failure.

In just a few moments, he had prepared the Brain Fluid and Sealing Fluid, then carefully spread the Brain Fluid evenly over the blank magic card.

Once the Brain Fluid was applied, Dark carefully picked up the magic brain dropper, first drawing out one point of Greed.

Starting with 1 point of Greed would allow him to better observe the reaction between Lust and Greed.

Compared to Dark’s own Lust, the Moon Goddess version was about three times more diluted, lacking certain unique factors.

This diluted form actually made it easier to observe.

With a slight “squeak,” Dark held the magic dropper containing 1 point of Greed over the blank card and squeezed it firmly.

As the dropper let out a high-pitched squeal, the drop of Greed fell onto the card’s surface and quickly spread, aided by the Brain Fluid.

The blank magic card was now tinged with a muted blue hue.

Dark focused intently, drew a drop of the Moon Goddess version of Lust from the Bottle of Thoughts, and pressed the tip of the magic brain dropper above the blank card once again, squeezing firmly.

With a “drip,” a single drop of pale pink liquid fell from the dropper and landed on the blue-tinted card surface.

To his surprise, the faint pink droplet floated like an oil layer on water, completely separated from the Greed.

Dark didn’t make an immediate decision but continued to observe.

After about three minutes, however, he shook his head.

His judgment was slightly off—Greed and Lust couldn’t merge at all.

The two Deadly Sins might not conflict, but neither could they fuse.

"Should I continue, or cut my losses now?" Dark furrowed his brow slightly.

"Just because pure Greed and Lust can't naturally merge doesn't mean they can't under external influence. Perhaps the final crafting process will encourage some degree of fusion between the two, just like how Gatomon and Black Black Gatomon are a fusion of Pride and Lust."

After careful consideration, he decided to continue.

No risk, no reward.

This wasn’t the time to be stingy over some materials.

So, he proceeded to add more Lust.

He kept going until the entire 30 points of the Moon Goddess version of Lust were added, then sealed the top with Sealing Fluid before beginning to draw the crafting magic circle.

In the end... the crafting magic circle was also successfully activated.

Dark could clearly sense that the inside of the magic card was reacting, but the actual result would have to wait.

He wasn’t in a hurry. He only picked it up and cleaned it once the card had fully completed.

The finished card was its usual pink hue, with a blue dot representing Greed in the center.

However, there was no sign of any other color mixed into that blue dot.

"On the surface, it looks like Greed and Lust still haven't merged. It seems like they were just stacked on top of each other... Let's see what happens!"

After a preliminary observation, Dark infused the card with magic energy to gather information.

"This card, for now, is still Lust III: Moon."

After a more detailed analysis, he couldn’t help but frown, a strange look crossing his face.

From the description, this Lust III: Moon showed no trace of Greed—it was as if the single point of Greed had been completely enveloped by the thirty points of Mood Goddess version Lust. There was no conflict, no fusion, and it seemed entirely irrelevant to the magic card itself.

He thought for a moment before summoning the DemiDevimon again.

This time, DemiDevimon looked bitter and cautiously asked, "Is it that again?"

Dark nodded. "Yes, that one."

"Uwah!"  DemiDevimon screamed in panic and instinctively tried to run.

But then, it suddenly froze, unable to move, as it noticed Misdreavus giggling in the corner of the wall—it was using its ultimate skill, Telekinesis.

Dark, taking advantage of the moment, activated Lust III: Moon, working in perfect sync.

Bathed in the glow of Lust III: Moon, DemiDevimon’s form underwent a drastic change. In the blink of an eye, it broke free from Misdreavus’s psychic hold.

After successfully evolving into Black Gatomon, its eyes turned into heart shapes, and it instinctively leapt toward Dark.

"Stop." At Dark’s command, it halted immediately and stood still.

...

"So, even though Greed didn’t take effect, Lust III: Moon has become controllable."

A look of joy appeared in Dark's eyes as he immediately began to analyze the situation.

After a while, he managed to piece together some clues and wrote in his notebook:

"It’s likely that some special factor contained in that drop of Greed had an effect, altering Lust III: Moon."

"The 30 points of Moon Goddess version of Lust suppressed the single point of Greed, but it couldn't suppress that special factor."

"For now, I shall call it the Demon God Factor... no, let’s call it the Dark Factor!"

"I’m certain this factor exists, though whether it’s truly related to the Demon God is still unknown."

"Additionally, the exact effects of this factor are still unclear."

"Perhaps the reason Deadly Sin Cards can grant intelligence, and why the Deadly Sins protect the soul from being destroyed during crafting processes, is connected to this special Dark Factor."

"Tch, naming it after myself feels a bit embarrassing. Maybe I should change the name?"
