Invite me to dinner?
Lin Tian racked his brain but couldn’t recall ever interacting with this pianist. However, he vaguely remembered seeing Yao Han among the judges when he confronted Toba Jianhui outside the office.
If anyone were to extend an invitation, shouldn’t it have been to Gan Yanyu, the contestant, rather than him, the accompanist? Why single him out?
Could this be retaliation for publicly challenging Toba Jianhui? Was Yao Han planning to confront him in person?
Surely the Zhonghua music scene wasn’t that aggressive, was it?
After much deliberation, Lin Tian decided to meet him anyway. If this had anything to do with Toba Jianhui, it was better to face it head-on.
They agreed to meet that evening at a restaurant called Brilliant. Lin Tian searched for it on his map app and was surprised to find it located in the outskirts of town—far from any subway line and requiring three bus transfers. A taxi seemed like the only viable option.
At around five in the afternoon, Lin Tian set off. After an hour’s drive, he arrived at a street even he, a native of Qingzhou, had never visited. The occasional cargo truck rumbled by, kicking up clouds of dust. Sparse buildings dotted the landscape every few dozen meters. Calling it suburban felt generous—it was more like a rural-urban fringe.
Even as a specially invited judge from the capital, surely Yao Han wasn’t staying in such a desolate area? Confused, Lin Tian continued sitting in silence for another ten minutes until the car stopped in front of a lone restaurant.
Stepping out, Lin Tian saw the name “Brilliant” emblazoned on the door of what appeared to be a standalone eatery.
A Zhonghua restaurant with such a fancy Western name?
Entering the establishment, Lin Tian approached the counter to inquire but quickly noticed that, in the otherwise empty dining hall, there was only one occupied table.
He walked over and took a seat.
“Oh~ you’re here.”
Yao Han stood up immediately, extending his hand warmly. “Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise,” Lin Tian replied, shaking hands perfunctorily.
He still felt a bit miffed about traveling all the way out here for a meal.
“During competitions, private interactions between contestants and judges can cause trouble if spotted by the media. So I hope you will understand.” Yao Han chuckled, sitting back down.
Ah, so that’s why HE’d chosen such a remote location.
Despite the risk of being seen, Yao Han had gone through the trouble to arrange this meeting. But for what purpose?
“I wanted to talk about yesterday’s performance,” Yao Han began bluntly, cutting straight to the chase. “Your collaboration with Gan Yanyu was extraordinary. Honestly, I haven’t heard such a deeply moving performance in ages. You two are more than capable of competing on the world stage!”
Though flattered by Yao Han’s praise, Lin Tian remained unimpressed. His tone carried a hint of sarcasm as he retorted, “Yes, we may have that potential—but isn’t advancing to the semifinals already uncertain?”
Yao Han picked up on Lin Tian’s dissatisfaction. He understood the frustration well but sighed nonetheless.
“That’s just how Toba is—selfish, arrogant. Musicians at his level tend to be egocentric. Don’t take it to heart.”
“So you agree with him then?” Lin Tian asked pointedly.
Had Yao Han dragged him all the way out here just to smooth things over?
At that moment, a server arrived, placing dishes on the table: spicy pig intestines, fish-flavored eggplant, and braised trotters in a clay pot. It turned out to be a Sichuan restaurant.
As Yao Han served himself rice, he continued, “Partially yes, partially no.”
“What do you mean?”
“It’s true that Gan Yanyu’s cello playing is dangerous, but I don’t agree that she’ll only destroy those around her.”
Yao Han locked eyes with Lin Tian. “To be honest, I envy you.”
“Huh?”
“As a pianist, collaborating with someone like Gan Yanyu must feel incredible. Watching your duet of A Step Away, I closed my eyes and felt as though I was right there at your ballroom dance.”
The immersive experience was akin to witnessing a spectacular theatrical performance up close. Even as a mere spectator, Yao Han found himself exhilarated.
If he were the pianist accompanying Gan Yanyu, he couldn’t imagine how thrilling it would feel. But he knew that only Lin Tian, who had truly understood Gan Yanyu, could succeed in harmonizing with her. Others would likely crumble under the weight of her intensity, just as Toba Jianhui described.
Yet, even knowing the risks, Yao Han wouldn’t hesitate to embrace such music—even if it meant eventual destruction.
“So from my perspective, I fully support you continuing to play this way without hesitation. Don’t let anything hold you back.”
Unlike Toba Jianhui, who viewed Gan Yanyu as someone he needed to control, Yao Han harbored no paternalistic intentions. He didn’t know Gan Yanyu personally and held no emotional stake in their partnership. Whether they spiraled into madness or plummeted into despair was none of his concern.
All Yao Han cared about was experiencing the most heart-stirring, perfect performances possible.
“…”
In Yao Han’s eyes, Lin Tian glimpsed something wild—a fervent obsession with music.
Yao Han cleared his throat, regaining composure before continuing. “Of course, after facing such setbacks, you might now question Gan Yanyu’s approach to performing. You’re likely wondering how best to protect her as her partner. Specifically, you’re probably considering how to use your piano skills to keep her grounded when danger arises during performances—and whether abandoning this style altogether might be necessary.”
Every word hit home.
Lin Tian’s pupils dilated slightly. Was this what it meant to connect with another top-tier musician? Yao Han had effortlessly articulated every concern weighing on Lin Tian’s mind.
“To protect her,” Yao Han declared, “you must first suppress her.”
“What?”
“As an accompanist, merely following along and mirroring her emotions won’t help. To truly share her burden, you need to dominate the performance—dive in ahead of her, overpowering her with your own playing. Protecting her starts with surpassing her.”
“In other words,” Yao Han leaned forward, his voice rising with excitement, “in the next round, Gan Yanyu only needs to focus on her part. The key lies with you, Lin Tian. If you can pull this off, you’ll crush Toba Jianhui’s smug face!”
By now, Yao Han was visibly fired up, slamming the table as he stood abruptly. “Damn it, I’ve always hated that old man. I don’t trust the other mediocre cellists, but you—I believe in you completely!”
