Chapter 54: The "Sudden Death" of the Lord

Mithra couldn’t help but glance back every few steps, only feeling reassured when she confirmed that the distant flashes of swordlight remained far away. At the same time, she didn’t forget her primary task—whenever the sounds of battle quieted, she would cast another healing spell.

Thanks to the high quality of her laureate, even cross-tier healing consumed relatively little mana.

Suddenly, an ethereal howl echoed from the darkness, leaving both Mithra and Victor momentarily stunned. Coming to their senses, they exchanged a glance, then silently quickened their pace.

"Only... does this cry feel somewhat familiar?"

This form of mental attack made Mithra pause for a moment. She remembered that Viya seemed to have a similar ability.

No, it couldn’t possibly be Viya… She shook her head, dismissing the impractical thought.

After all, no matter how powerful Viya was, she was still limited by her tier. Even with her impressive feat of single-handedly defeating a Banshee, it was hard to imagine her going toe-to-toe with a Tier Two nightmare lord.

Moreover, Mithra wasn’t blind. She could tell from the width of the four streaks of swordlight that one weapon was a greatsword, while the other was likely a polearm. But Viya specialized in single-handed swords—it didn’t match up at all.

"There’s a safe room!"

Victor’s deep voice carried a hint of excitement.

The Seventy-Seven Commandments required every paladin to remain calm under pressure, always composed. Yet, upon seeing a safe haven, he couldn’t suppress the joy bubbling within him.

Hearing this, Mithra turned around and saw a blinding flash of white light at the end of the dark corridor.

But she didn’t respond. Instead, she closed her eyes, gathering mana in her palms as the laureate above her head grew brighter.

She intended to cast one final healing spell on the two lords before leaving.

Just as Mithra was about to fully activate her laureate, her eyes suddenly snapped open, and she clumsily lunged to the right.

Boom! A shadow was flung into the spot where she had been standing moments ago, writhing weakly as if smashed there by some overwhelming force.

There was no doubt—only a nightmare lord had the power to do this.

Was it a warning?

I remember one of the weapons was a greatsword… Could one of the lords’ true forms be that of a knight? Was it angered by my disruption of the fairness of their duel?

It was very possible… Mithra swallowed nervously, pushing herself backward on her hands for a few steps.

In theory, most low-tier Void Domain lords lacked intelligence, driven purely by primal instincts. But something like chivalry—given her understanding of those fanatics—wasn’t something they’d forget, even if they became mindless.

"Hah—"

Victor let out a low shout, his holy sword slicing through the shadow on the ground. After sheathing his sword, he was about to check on the young lady he had just met.

But his expression froze.

"Hmm?"

Mithra also sensed something amiss. She looked toward the nearby source of light, then paled further from her already mana-depleted state.

In her haste to dodge, she had momentarily forgotten to protect the candle, causing the fragile light source to fall directly to the floor. The pale flame flickered faintly, growing weaker.

Krrrack… Cracks appeared on the surface of the candle and quickly spread across its entire body.

Before their eyes, the candle shattered into pieces, and the light vanished instantly.

Without hesitation, both Mithra and Victor acted on instinct.

They sprinted madly toward the glowing point of the safe room.

A pale golden laureate appeared above Victor’s head, and the holy light enveloping his sword grew intense, allowing them to see the approaching shadows.

In just a few seconds, even though Victor had to clear the shadows ahead, he still pulled several body lengths ahead of Mithra.

Part of the reason was his higher Ring count and superior physical condition, but another part was that Mithra’s attire wasn’t designed for movement. To make running easier, she had to hold up her skirt as she ran.

Fortunately, their earlier exploration had been cautious, so their mana reserves were still sufficient to withstand the tide of shadows for a while.

Ten meters,

Seven meters,

Five meters,

Three meters.

...

The glowing point drew closer. Victor swung his sword horizontally, cutting the surrounding shadows in half. Without pausing to catch his breath, he placed his hand on the glowing point and pulled outward forcefully.

The glowing point twisted into a wooden door, revealing a brightly lit scene inside that starkly contrasted with the outside world.

Victor glanced back at Mithra, who was still rushing toward him. In the light from the safe room, he could see the horde of shadows pursuing her, closing in rapidly.

His hand remained on the doorknob, observing the surroundings. If the noblewoman were swallowed by the shadows or if other shadows approached, he would close the door immediately.

If this were the real world, following The Seventy-Seven Commandments, Victor would have done everything in his power to protect the lives of innocent civilians. But this was the Void Domain—death was often a form of release for those unable to defend themselves.

Seven, six, five, four… He watched the shadows charging from other directions, silently calculating the distance and timing.

Three, two, one… As Victor finished counting the last number, Mithra barely managed to dash inside just in time. Almost simultaneously, he slammed the door shut.

Bam bam bam—

Loud knocking reverberated from outside. Shadows pounded relentlessly against the door, but the seemingly fragile wooden barrier remained unshaken.

"We’re finally safe."

Mithra placed her hand on her heaving chest, leaning against the door as she gasped for air.

Escaping the shadows had left her, a mere First Ring Ascender, utterly exhausted.

"Let’s rest for now."

Victor relaxed his nerves and began surveying the surroundings.

It resembled a cozy living room, albeit without a balcony or windows. A vase with fresh flowers sat in the corner, along with a sofa for resting. A faint, pleasant aroma lingered in the air.

"Edith?"

Upon spotting a familiar figure sitting on the sofa, the name slipped from his lips.

"Shh—"

Edith raised a finger to her lips. As Victor moved closer, he noticed Ivy lying beside her, fast asleep.

Edith stood up and moved away from the sofa, lowering her voice.

"How’s the situation on your side?"

"Bad." Victor’s expression was grave. He didn’t immediately begin exchanging information but instead stepped aside to reveal Mithra resting against the door.

The latter picked up on the atmosphere and began introducing herself.

"Mithra. Just call me Mithra."

"You probably heard my name earlier—I’m Edith."

After saying this, Edith suddenly uttered a statement that left Victor baffled.

"Your teammate has quite the personality."

Personality… Viya, what exactly did you do… Mithra forced a nervous smile. "Is… is that so? I hope you get along well."

"Mm, we actually got along quite well."

Edith gave Mithra a deep look, making her feel uneasy.

According to the original plan, reuniting with teammates should have happened shortly after starting. However, after that incident, it took Edith and Ivy considerable effort to find this safe room.

"Let’s exchange information… Wait, did the mission change?"

Edith paused mid-sentence, reaching into her pocket to pull out the Void Domain envelope. The once pristine white envelope now radiated warmth.

Most of the time, a heating Void Domain envelope indicated that challengers had completed a milestone task or significantly impacted the island.

Considering their situation, it could only be the latter.

The neat text inside the envelope seemed to come alive, crawling across the paper to form new sentences.

There was no long prelude, no narrative tone—just a single, concise line:

[The Informant has been slain.]

Edith: ???
