Chapter 134: The Little Prince Hits Shelves!
"Of course," Gu Lu nodded. "It's already been released in a small area of Beijing today. In two days, it’ll officially hit the shelves at all Xinhua Bookstores and Sanlian Bookstores nationwide."
"So I can buy it outside in two days?" Gu Jiayu's eyes widened with excitement.
"That’s right," Gu Lu confirmed.
"!!!" Clutching the book, Gu Jiayu couldn’t suppress her grin. She was already imagining how to show off in class.
Unbeknownst to Gu Lu, his reputation in Class 7, Grade 8 of Bishan Laifeng Middle School was sky-high. Gu Jiayu had long been boasting about her brother to her classmates, painting him as an unparalleled genius.
"I’ll go make dinner. You can play around or use the computer inside if you want," Gu Lu said, knowing full well that Gu Jiayu was a gaming addict.
"I’ll just read your new book for now," Gu Jiayu replied.
Forty minutes later, Gu Lu served up a feast: braised pork belly, boiled sliced pork, and mapo tofu—though the tofu turned out less than perfect.
As he placed the dishes on the table, he said, "Eat more meat. Look how thin you’ve gotten."
But Gu Jiayu, still glowing from finishing The Little Prince, was brimming with excitement.
"Big brother, is the drunkard on the planet based on Dad?" Gu Jiayu asked.
She also thought of another line but decided against saying it: Was the vain man modeled after Mom? From what she remembered, Gu Lu’s mother loved to brag about Xiao Yang—but lately, she’d quieted down.
"How was it?" Gu Lu asked.
"Without a doubt, it’s the best fairy tale I’ve ever read. And!" Gu Jiayu’s eyes darted over Gu Lu like searchlights, scanning for any hint of emotion.
"Brother, are you in love? This fox and rose thing—oh my goodness."
Gu Jiayu had a habit of marking her favorite passages while reading, then copying them into a notebook later.
She pointed to several sections:
[Perhaps there are five thousand flowers in the world just like you, but you’re the one who’s irreplaceable to me.
Once you tame something, you’re responsible for it forever.]
"Brother, tell me honestly—did something happen?" Gu Jiayu prodded.
"You’re overthinking things, young girl," Gu Lu chuckled. "Hurry up and eat before the boiled pork gets cold."
"Big brother, is there anything you want?" Gu Jiayu stuffed her cheeks with food, looking like a chipmunk.
"Are you planning to buy me a gift? My birthday isn’t for a while yet," Gu Lu teased.
"Can’t you pretend you don’t know? If you guess, where’s the surprise? I need time to save money—I’m greedy and love buying useless trinkets," Gu Jiayu explained earnestly.
Gu Jiayu knew herself well. Gu Lu trusted her words because, according to his past memories, no one cared more about his birthday than his sister did.
He remembered the little box he found when he moved. It was filled with small gifts from Gu Jiayu. Back when she was in elementary school, she didn’t have much pocket money, so her presents were simple.
"Anything specific you want?"
"Not really," Gu Lu admitted. "But whatever it is, I’ll love it."
"Got it! I have an idea now," Gu Jiayu declared confidently.
There was no way they’d finish all the food. Both siblings ended up eating until their stomachs were round and full.
After dinner, Gu Lu tied on an apron to clean up, though he personally felt it was unnecessary. Still, wearing one made him feel more professional somehow.
He then prepared a makeshift bed on the solid wood sofa—a routine whenever his sister visited. To ensure comfort, he even bought a single mattress, which he stored in the wardrobe when not in use.
"Big brother, could you pick me up from school next Friday?" Gu Jiayu asked. Before Gu Lu could respond, she quickly added, "If you’re busy, never mind—it’s not important anyway."
This preemptive self-denial was her way of protecting herself from rejection.
"You’re old enough to go home by yourself," Gu Lu remarked.
Her school wasn’t far from home, so she hadn’t needed escorts since middle school began.
"If it’s inconvenient, forget it. Shapingba District is quite far from Bishan," Gu Jiayu said.
"Actually, I wanted to get out for a bit. Qinglong Lake National Forest Park in Bishan has beautiful scenery," Gu Lu replied. "The only issue is that by the time I finish school on Fridays, it’s already 6:30 PM. Even without evening study sessions, your middle school probably dismisses earlier."
"You’re right—I didn’t think of that," Gu Jiayu realized.
"Did you get into trouble at school and don’t want parents to know, so you’re asking me to come instead?" Gu Lu joked.
"Of course not!" Gu Jiayu protested. "Even though my grades dropped slightly recently, I’ve been very well-behaved at school."
Her real motive was simple: she wanted to show off her amazing older brother.
It wasn’t because Gu Lu had become famous recently; rather, it was hard to ask such a favor when he barely had time to eat before.
Typically, Gu Lu’s mother only allowed Gu Jiayu to stay overnight on Saturdays, and her stepdad would pick her up Sunday morning. However, after visiting No. 8 High School, her mother relaxed the rules slightly, allowing her stepdad to fetch her in the afternoon.
Middle schools generally required evening study sessions starting at 6:30 PM on Sundays, including Laifeng Middle School.
---
Monday morning. Gu Lu walked into school holding The Little Prince in one hand and the November 25th issue of Youth Digest (Red Edition) in the other. Naturally, this was an advance copy.
That’s right—he was going to trade these items for special privileges with Mr. Hu. Specifically, skipping both morning and evening study sessions.
But unexpectedly, Mr. Hu offered him an even more enticing option...
Before diving into that, let’s talk about Director Jian. Director Jian went wild!
AvidReader: [@Gu Lu the Great New release alert! #TheLittlePrince launch#—a brilliant work. Everyone should check it out!]
AvidReader: [#TheLittlePrince launch# The most wonderful fairy tale I’ve read in recent years. Highly recommended!]
AvidReader: [To be precise, it’s the best fairy tale I’ve encountered in the last decade—no exaggeration! @Gu Lu the Great, The Little Prince will become a milestone in domestic children’s literature.]
Three consecutive posts, each more explosive than the last.
People were buzzing.
MilkDude: "Is Director Jian’s account hacked? This feels too exaggerated. A milestone in fairy tales? Last I checked, Shen Shixi held that title."
SuYuqing: "Don’t even start. Shen Shixi’s works have tons of errors, especially that gazelle story in the textbook. But yeah, Director Jian does seem off. Could it be an ad campaign?"
PsiHope: "Director Jian promoting someone? That’s unheard of. No one has that kind of pull… Also, this Gu Lu the Great sounds familiar."
BookGobbler: "Forget it—I’m checking it out myself."
