Chapter 46: The Infuriating Void Domain Creatures Dared to Disguise Themselves…
Mithra trudged along, her energy completely drained as she imagined what lay ahead.
Endless Lord’s Islands and the Past Island awaited them. Judging by the personality of the person beside her, Viya probably wouldn’t even glance at the Tranquil Island.
The thought of those terrifying Void Domain creatures made her scalp tingle, leaving her body tense and uneasy.
Her absent-mindedness showed in her walk—her pupils unfocused, lost in a vivid imagination of her bleak future.
Lin Qi paid no mind to this seemingly dazed NPC. Upon reaching the Star of High Heaven, he hurried toward the reception desk without delay.
Unlike artificial Void Domains, the true Void Domain had layers of depth. The deeper one ventured, the greater the danger—and reward. However, dying there came with severe consequences.
The only thing Lin Qi regretted was that, due to their team’s low average Ring count, the highest Void Domain they could enter was only Tier Two.
"It’s not a problem," Lin Qi reasoned. "High-level dungeons naturally drop better loot. If there weren’t restrictions early on, it would turn into a pure power fantasy."
He accepted this mechanic because, unlike other games, this one had no weapon level restrictions. In other words, endgame weapons were plug-and-play.
In his previous experience playing My Arms Are Ridiculously Strong: Zombie Edition, being handed overpowered modified weapons had completely stripped away the challenge, making the game utterly dull.
"How many people are in your group?" the association staff asked.
"Two," Viya replied.
"I’m sorry, but your average Ring count is only one. To challenge a Tier Two Void Domain, you need four people."
The staff shook their head apologetically.
"What if I have dissociative identity disorder? Would counting all my personalities as four work?"
Viya’s deadpan delivery made it hard to imagine anyone saying something so absurd with a straight face.
"You’re quite the comedian," the staff chuckled awkwardly.
At that moment, Mithra snapped out of her daze. Resigned to her fate, she approached the staff with a weary expression.
"Could you make an exception?"
Surprisingly, the staff didn’t immediately reject her request. Instead, they studied Mithra for a few moments, then glanced down at the report she’d just received.
After three or four seconds, they hesitantly nodded.
"Alright."
That was it?
A big question mark popped into Viya’s small head.
Taking the approval slip from the staff, they headed upstairs. Sensing Viya’s confusion, Mithra offered an explanation.
"Clothes speak louder than words sometimes. Even if I don’t say anything, others can tell I come from a well-off background."
She then pointed to her long gray hair.
"Next, my hair color and eye color add another layer of context. Together, these traits convey a second message. Finally, all they need to do is glance at the list and confirm my surname."
It sounded complicated… Viya thought to herself. She understood these "social cues" in theory, but seeing them play out in real life left her momentarily bewildered.
They arrived at the association’s exclusive ascension chamber, standing before the massive, silent door. After handing over their pass to the staff and enduring several minutes of device calibration, an azure starlight began to glow before the entrance.
As they stepped through the door, the world spun around them, and their vision faded to black.
...
The Void Domain.
"The scenery seems different."
After a loading screen that lasted several seconds, the map materialized. Lin Qi was astonished to find that this Void Domain had changed—it was more detailed, with auroras nearly covering the entire sky.
"After all, the previous ones were artificial. Even the most skilled craftsmen couldn’t replicate a fraction of this dome’s beauty."
Mithra looked pale, holding her forehead. Passing through the stargate felt like falling from hundreds of meters in the air—but in reverse.
Impressive. They actually built a separate scene model for this… Lin Qi thought. Even if they’d just swapped out the skybox texture, it still showed effort from the development team.
At the edge of the horizon, three glowing dots floated. Unlike the artificial Void Domain, two of these dots overlapped.
Both led to the Tranquil Island, while the third pointed to the Past Island.
"?"
"In artificial Void Domains, the islands are fixed to ensure explorers don’t hit a dead end. But the real Void Domain isn’t so ‘merciful.’ If luck turns sour, all three dots could lead to Lord’s Island."
Mithra took it upon herself to explain.
"There’s such a good thing?" Viya raised an eyebrow.
"..." Mithra opened her mouth, then remembered who she was dealing with.
Ultimately, with Mithra voluntarily abstaining, they unanimously decided on their next destination.
A burst of azure light enveloped everyone on the island.
...
Another long map-loading phase. Lin Qi had never seen a game where every new stage required a loading screen.
But considering this roguelike was more akin to mini-dungeons, longer loading times were understandable.
Unlike the warm and peaceful start on the train last time, this time—even before the screen lit up—the urgent, chaotic noises spilled through the headphones, startling Lin Qi enough to lower the volume.
When the screen finally illuminated—
What greeted them was a narrow corridor. The dim white lights barely illuminated anything beyond two or three meters.
The headphones went eerily silent, even the music disappearing. The silence was deafening, making Lin Qi question reality.
The sudden shift in atmosphere almost made him think he was playing a horror game.
By chance, he activated the "Half-Knowledge Eye." Particles swept through the surroundings like sonar, highlighting two humanoid silhouettes lurking in the shadows behind him.
There are people behind me?!
Lin Qi admitted that the abrupt change in gameplay startled him slightly. But remembering this was fundamentally an action RPG, he quickly regained his composure.
After all, a horror game where you have guns isn’t really a horror game!
...
An endless corridor stretched before them. Flickering lights threatened to shatter at any moment, and shadows loomed ominously, ready to unleash ghosts at a moment’s notice. It was like the horror stories her mother used to tell her as a child to scare her into sleeping.
If this had been earlier, Viya might have been frightened by such a scene.
But now, knowing who controlled her body, she felt no fear. In fact, she almost wanted to laugh.
Suddenly, her vision dimmed as the Half-Knowledge Eye activated, outlining two humanoid figures behind her.
Almost simultaneously, Viya spun around, her hands reaching into the shadows to grab the necks of the highlighted figures.
"Be careful!"
A terrified female voice cried out, followed by a sharp slash cutting through the darkness.
The attack was fast, but its angle was flawed, likely due to panic. Viya simply ducked and continued reaching for her target.
She missed one—but only one.
"Waaaaah—"
Viya stared down at the little girl dangling by the scruff of her neck, suddenly falling silent, no further movements.
"Let go of my sister."
The other figure emerged swiftly from the shadows, her eyes blazing with fury as she glared at the attacker.
The woman held a silver longsword embedded with a pale green gemstone. A faint laureate hovered above her forehead, signaling her readiness to fight to the death if her loved one was harmed.
"..."
Viya glanced at the fiercely righteous woman, then at the sobbing little girl.
Realization dawned on her as she exclaimed:
"Despicable Void Domain creatures, daring to disguise themselves as innocent little girls!"
