Chapter 17: What Do You Mean, “You Need to Kill a Few People on Your Way to Class?”

---

In the end, it was Mithra who broke the silence.

“A necklace?”

A beautiful necklace lay quietly in the chest. Even someone as well-traveled as Mithra had to admit that this piece could rank among her top five favorites in terms of appearance.

Viya picked it up and turned it over in her palm, examining it from all angles in an attempt to figure out what made it special.

“Unless you’re a professional appraiser, I doubt fiddling with it for half a day will yield anything useful—and you might even damage it.”

Mithra silently approved of Viya taking the necklace. After all, she hadn’t contributed much to the battle. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Viya had single-handedly cleared the island, so the spoils rightfully belonged to her.

Besides, Mithra didn’t have any particular need for it herself.

“And it’s not like I’m rushing you,” she added, “but if we don’t leave soon, we might not make it out in time.”

She pointed to the beams above. Flames had already climbed to the second floor. Whether it would take minutes or seconds, no one could predict when the church might collapse entirely.

Viya nodded slightly, placed the necklace into her pocket, and followed Mithra outside toward the stargate.

Her vision blurred again, and when it cleared, the familiar azure sky greeted her once more.

At the same time, the bracelet on her wrist emitted a series of beeps. It was a magical artifact issued by the academy before entering the Void Domain, designed to record each candidate’s performance for scoring purposes.

“Fifty points secured—impressive!”

Mithra leaned over with a cheerful grin.

Clearing a Lord’s Island awarded a full hundred points, which averaged out to fifty per person. At this rate, even candidates who skipped the written exam could secure direct admission.

With her hands clasped behind her back, she chatted casually:

“By the way, how did you break through the banshee’s illusion? I’m really curious.”

“With my eyes.”

“And how did you dodge the banshee’s claws? Was there some technique involved?”

“With my legs.”

“The banshee’s shriek is notoriously lethal…”

“Not listening helps.”

Mithra’s smile froze.

She realized this conversation was going nowhere!

For the first time, she found herself missing the servants back at the duke’s estate. Though their words were often overly flattering, at least talking to them was comfortable—not like this agonizing struggle to find topics.

Glancing at Viya, who continued walking ahead without turning back, Mithra hesitated before finally speaking:

“There’s actually something I’ve been wanting to ask…”

“Go ahead,” Viya replied without looking back.

“I’m curious… Did you study somewhere before?”

Mithra asked softly.

When the banshee’s head had been crushed earlier, it had truly terrified her.

That almost pathological “decisiveness” was something she’d only seen in Ascenders who had long explored the Void Domain.

But Viya also displayed the ignorance typical of newcomers, which confused her judgment and left her unable to draw conclusions.

“Study?” Viya finally stopped walking.

“Yes.” Mithra quickly backtracked: “Of course, everyone has secrets they’re entitled to keep. If my question offended you, please forgive me.”

“It’s fine.” Viya shook her head lightly, her gaze distant as she began to reminisce:

“I once studied at a place called Hogwarts.”

“It was magical and beautiful.”

“The only downside was that everywhere was locked, and good things were always hidden away tightly. Plus, the school culture was… pure.”

“To put it mildly, just getting to potions class required killing a few people along the way.”

This was the most Viya had ever spoken, leaving Mithra both surprised and shaken.

Wha… What?!

Killing people on the way to class?

If anyone else had said that, Mithra would have dismissed it with a sneer. But considering it came from Viya—who rarely joked—and recalling the banshee’s gruesome fate, it suddenly seemed plausible.

Doesn’t that mean the student population must be incredibly high…? This thought crossed Mithra’s mind unbidden, immoral and morbid though it was. She couldn’t help herself.

Clearing her throat, she said:

“It sounds like a cruel, dark past. But rest assured, no one in Rothesia will judge you for it. Our laws only apply to actions committed after entering civilized society.”

Mithra didn’t condemn Viya. On the contrary, she admired her for escaping the brutal civilization she grew up in and coming to live independently in a civilized society—a feat unimaginably difficult.

Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, Mithra gestured toward the glowing orb ahead:

“Shall we continue or stop? Our score is already sufficient.”

Most candidates probably would have passed their first island by now. However, non-Lord Islands typically awarded only twenty points, meaning the average per person was pitifully low.

Mithra was inclined to stop here. Fifty points was already an impressive score. In the afternoon, she could go flaunt it to her professor, then stroll away under his astonished gaze and spend hours relaxing in the square.

But continuing wasn’t out of the question either. To skip grades, one needed around four hundred points—a daunting number.

Still, if the goal wasn’t skipping grades but simply earning bragging rights upon enrollment, that was achievable too.

“Maybe we could check out the Past Island?” Mithra suggested eagerly.

She went on unprompted:

“I know you’ll give me that look asking me to explain, so I’ll just do it myself.”

Adopting an official tone, she explained:

“The Past Island is essentially a vessel for a segment of history—a complete story.

“We might enter a crime scene after a murder, or perhaps a train explosion case, or get entangled in some dramatic tale of love and hatred…”

“Its completion relies more on a combination of wit and strength, and it’s not as harsh.”

Traditionally, non-Ascenders took the Tranquil Island while Ascender teams tackled the Past Island.

---

In the real world.

Lin Qi was increasingly convinced that something about this process felt off.

He thought carefully.

Wait… wasn’t this just roguelike gameplay?

Every time you entered the Void Domain, you encountered different islands—check.

After clearing one island, you could choose the type of the next—check.

All that was missing was selecting…

Just as this thought crossed his mind, a pop-up appeared on the screen with three options, each corresponding to a different blessing.

Speak of the devil… Lin Qi focused on the blessings.

[Blessing of Cycles (Green)]
[Effect: Restores your health to maximum, but reduces your maximum health by 10%.]

[Blessing of Weaving (Blue)]
[Effect: Reduces cooldown for laureates by 15% after activation.]

[Blessing of the Void (White)]
[Effect: Locks max health at 1, increases all stats by 125%.]

“First, eliminate option three—it’s probably for late-game speedruns.”

“Options two and one are both solid…”

After a moment of hesitation, Lin Qi decided to restore his health first.

After defeating the banshee lord, his health was down to 40%—far from ideal. In games like these, survival was key.

He chose [Blessing of Cycles].
