Chapter 203: Gu Lang Falls Ill Again

At two o'clock in the morning, the private jet descended through the clouds and landed at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. Due to air traffic control, the departure had been delayed by over two hours. Gu Lang didn’t mind, but for Wang Ping, those hours felt like an eternity.

Private jets may sound luxurious compared to commercial flights, but once the novelty wore off, Wang Ping found himself missing the plush comfort of the hotel mattress. At least if he accidentally scratched it, the cost of replacement would only be a few dozen yuan—not like now, where every step required him to tiptoe carefully so as not to damage anything expensive.

But what truly irked Wang Ping wasn’t the walking—it was Yan Gang’s incessant attention after finishing his idle chat with Gu Lang. While Little Four remained uncooperative (and Yan Gang wisely avoided provoking the unpredictable pup), Wang Ping appeared far more docile by comparison. Thus, throughout the flight, Wang Ping became the unwilling recipient of Yan Gang’s enthusiastic affection—warm, overwhelming, and utterly exhausting.

It wasn’t just Wang Ping who felt uneasy; Gu Lang, too, had grown uncomfortable during the journey. The age gap between them left little room for common ground beyond live streaming. However, after a brief conversation, Gu Lang realized that despite Yan Gang’s outwardly trendy appearance, the man was essentially a tech novice when it came to online platforms. His interaction with streams consisted solely of logging in and selecting a channel—he hadn’t even figured out how to follow or send gifts, let alone post comments. Each time he entered Gu Lang’s stream, he relied on keyword searches.

Gu Lang couldn’t help but feel a mix of amusement and pity. On one hand, he briefly attempted to educate Yan Gang about navigating livestreams. But regarding gifting… well, given his growing suspicion that Yan Gang was less interested in him and more smitten with Wang Ping, Gu Lang tactfully avoided bringing up donations. After all, being mistaken for someone fishing for tips would bruise his pride as an outdoor streaming celebrity.

So, upon landing, under Wang Ping’s pointed glare—which screamed “get us out of here”—Gu Lang politely declined Yan Gang’s invitation to dinner and fled with Wang Ping and Little Four in tow. Yan Gang seemed unfazed. He’d extended the offer on a whim anyway, pleased enough to have spent hours indulging his obsession with petting honey badgers.

After sending a quick message to Chen Bai to inform him of their return, Gu Lang settled into a nearby hotel with the two animals. They planned to wait until morning to consult Chen Bai before heading back to Shengjiawu. With less than ten days remaining until Douyu’s highly anticipated survival show began, logistics were tight. Wang Ping would accompany Gu Lang, but Little Four, barely weaned, needed to stay behind. Gu Lang hoped his grandmother could teach the rambunctious pup some manners.

---

The next morning, long before sunrise, the suite remained shrouded in darkness, curtains drawn tightly against the light. Gu Lang’s phone buzzed incessantly on the bedside table, yet its owner slumbered deeply, oblivious to the world. Outside the bedroom, Wang Ping tossed restlessly on the couch, draped in a bath towel serving as a makeshift blanket. Irritated by the persistent ringing, he pulled the towel over his head.

Little Four, perched on the sofa beside him, had already been woken by the noise. Standing upright, the tiny creature let out plaintive yips directed toward Gu Lang’s room.

“Damn it! Can’t a guy get some peace around here?” Wang Ping grumbled, throwing off the towel and leaping onto the floor. Padding silently into Gu Lang’s room, he found the human sprawled dramatically across the bed, face buried in a pillow, limbs akimbo.

Climbing onto the nightstand, Wang Ping squinted at the glowing screen displaying Chen Bai’s name. Remembering belatedly that he no longer used his tail to answer calls (his capacitive stylus was still stashed inside the Wrangler back in Lhasa), he sighed and hung up using his tongue instead. As soon as he did, the phone rang again.

Wang Ping hesitated. Maybe this call was urgent?

Deciding to intervene, he hopped onto the bed and nudged Gu Lang with his paw. No response. Leaning closer, he noticed Gu Lang’s breathing sounded unusually labored, muffled by the pillow. A firmer nudge yielded nothing.

Finally losing patience, Wang Ping delivered a sharp slap to Gu Lang’s cheek.

Smack!

To his astonishment, Gu Lang merely rolled over, cracked open one bleary eye, and promptly resumed snoring.

Something was clearly wrong. Observing Gu Lang’s flushed complexion, Wang Ping’s instincts kicked in. “This doesn’t look like exhaustion—it looks like altitude sickness.”

Seizing the still-ringing phone, Wang Ping answered using Gu Lang’s finger and initiated a video call with Chen Bai. Within moments, Chen Bai’s booming voice filled the room: “Gu Lang, you lazy bum! Why aren’t you answering your—uh…”

His tirade trailed off as the dim video feed revealed Gu Lang’s crimson cheeks, closed eyes, and Wang Ping’s glowing nocturnal gaze staring back at him.

---

An hour later, Gu Lang woke up disoriented in a hospital bed, oxygen mask strapped to his face. His first sight was Chen Bai, seated nearby scrolling through his phone.

“What’s going on? Why are you here?” Gu Lang croaked.

Chen Bai glared. “Why am I here? If I hadn’t spotted the hotel logo on your bedside table, you’d be cooling off in the morgue right now!”

Just then, a doctor entered the room, briskly removing Gu Lang’s oxygen mask and inspecting his pupils. “Hmm… Not bad. Young man’s got good stamina. Nothing serious.”

“Doctor, what happened to me?” Gu Lang asked anxiously.

“You recently returned from Tibet, stayed there for a while, and flew back, correct?” The doctor rattled off these statements with certainty, each hitting the mark.

Seeing Gu Lang’s panicked expression, the doctor chuckled reassuringly. “Don’t worry. This is a form of altitude sickness caused by rapid descent from high altitudes. Rest and recuperation should fix you up.”

“How long will he need to recover?” Chen Bai interjected urgently, visions of Douyu’s upcoming island survival show flashing before his eyes.

“A couple of weeks. If his constitution’s strong, maybe just one,” the doctor replied before moving on to another patient.

As the doctor exited, Chen Bai exhaled sharply, shooting Gu Lang a look tinged with exasperation. “Honestly…”

Gu Lang managed a weak laugh, scratching his itchy cheek. “If I’d known this would happen, I wouldn’t have taken that private jet… Oh, by the way, where’s Boss?”

“The hospital doesn’t allow pets. I left him at the hotel,” Chen Bai said dismissively before launching into a lecture about Gu Lang’s lack of basic knowledge.

Meanwhile, back at the hotel, Little Four’s cries echoed through the suite.

“Stop whining!” Wang Ping griped, tugging at his own fur in frustration. His stomach—and Little Four’s—growled loudly in protest. With mealtime long past and no snacks prepared, not to mention Gu Lang’s phone confiscated by Chen Bai, ordering takeout was impossible.

“Ugh, I’m starving…” Wang Ping lamented, clutching his empty belly. Hunger gnawed at him, leaving his honey-badger face etched with melancholy.
