Chapter 186: Gifts Must Remain Tidy
Wang Ping instinctively turned his gaze eastward along the lakeshore. Beyond the thick patches of camel thorn bushes, only an empty expanse of wilderness and swaying grass met his eyes—nothing else stirred.
"Could I be mistaken?"
Wang Ping frowned inwardly, uneasy that things weren’t adding up. Gu Lang cautiously crouched beside the Tibetan antelope, his hand brushing against its cold, lifeless body. The carcass was icy to the touch, devoid of warmth. A jagged wound on its neck revealed a dark red mosaic-like mess, yet the rest of the animal remained pristine, its fur clean and undisturbed.
"Wow, its fur is so soft… How did it end up here? Is this a Tibetan gazelle?" Gu Lang mused aloud.
"This is a Tibetan antelope," Yuan Xiaoxiao corrected, squatting down beside him. She inspected the wound on the antelope’s neck, her tone confident. "It was killed by a predator. Look at these bite marks on the neck, especially around the trachea…"
A notification chime rang out from Gu Lang’s chest, signaling another gifted item in the live stream. Yuan Xiaoxiao paused, reminded of the ongoing broadcast, and swallowed her next words.
But the damage—or rather, revelation—was done. In the live-stream chat, viewers marveled at Yuan Xiaoxiao’s composure and expertise, contrasting her sharply with their bumbling host.
"Does Miss Xiaoxiao have her own channel? If she streams, I’m subscribing immediately!"
"Miss Xiaoxiao knows so much more than some useless streamer."
"She’s incredible!"
"Support Miss Xiaoxiao!"
By now, Wang Ping had joined them, examining the antelope’s corpse. He overheard Gu Lang’s dismissive comment: "Ew! For a girl, you sure know how to inspect gross wounds! You’re quite the tough cookie!"
Yuan Xiaoxiao: …
From Wang Ping’s perspective, he could see the gloved fist beneath her sleeve tightening. Perhaps in the next second, it would connect with Gu Lang’s face. At this moment, she likely regretted ever cultivating a “delicate” persona.
"Hmm… Should I intervene?"
Wang Ping pondered for less than a second before deciding to feign ignorance. Setting aside personal biases, he fully supported Yuan Xiaoxiao if she decided to punch Gu Lang.
Just as the tension reached its peak, a faint whining sound emerged from Yuan Xiaoxiao’s backpack. Little Four was restless.
Gu Lang hurriedly moved behind her, extracting the reluctant wolf cub and placing it on the ground.
"Arooo!"
Apparently dissatisfied with the delay, Little Four let out two sharp barks at Gu Lang before trotting off to relieve itself.
"Eww!"
Both Gu Lang and Yuan Xiaoxiao jumped back, utterly speechless.
Wang Ping, however, was pleased. It seemed his training had borne fruit; at least Little Four now knew not to relieve itself inside the car, backpack, or tent. That said, its personality was oddly un-wolf-like—more akin to a mischievous husky.
Thinking of wolves, Wang Ping redirected his attention to the Tibetan antelope’s corpse. He examined the wound on its neck and confirmed Yuan Xiaoxiao’s assessment: the trachea and arteries had been severed by a powerful bite. Yet strangely, there were no other injuries, nor any bloodstains at the scene. Clearly, the body had been moved here from elsewhere.
Wang Ping narrowed his eyes, scanning the area around the corpse. If the wolves had left it here—or deliberately placed it—there should be traces. Even if unrelated to the pack, some evidence ought to remain.
Alas, after a thorough search, all he found were broken blades of grass indicating an animal had passed through. No lingering scent suggested the antelope had been abandoned here some time ago.
Scratching his head, Wang Ping felt his knowledge base insufficient.
Meanwhile, Yuan Xiaoxiao offered Gu Lang a suggestion.
"We should take it with us for food. Our supplies are running low."
"Huh? Great idea!" Wang Ping reflexively brightened. Though the Tibetan antelope was a protected species, it was already dead. As long as neither he nor poachers were responsible, eating it wouldn’t weigh on his conscience.
Unfortunately, Gu Lang’s voice cut through moments later.
"Eat it?"
Pointing at the corpse in disbelief, he exclaimed, "Do you even know it’s a protected species?"
"It’s already dead…" Yuan Xiaoxiao explained wearily. "And it’s a Tibetan antelope, not a Tibetan gazelle!"
"What’s the difference?" Gu Lang shook his head vigorously. "Rabbits and such are one thing, but I’d never eat a protected animal! Dead or alive! If word got out, how could I ever show my face in outdoor circles again?"
"When were you ever part of any outdoor circle?" Wang Ping scoffed silently.
"You’re only saying this because of the live stream, right?" Yuan Xiaoxiao thought bitterly. But she didn’t press further. After all, it was just a suggestion. If push came to shove, she had plenty of ways to find food on the plateau. As for Gu Lang? Starvation might do him good.
"Fine then!"
Shrugging indifferently, Yuan Xiaoxiao stepped over the corpse and walked ahead.
"Aroo!"
Little Four, fresh from its "personal cleanup," scampered after her, barking insistently. Reluctantly, Gu Lang bent down to pick it up.
"Hey? You’re just leaving like that? Shouldn’t we dig a hole and bury it?"
Gu Lang called out from where he stood.
"You bury it if you want!" Yuan Xiaoxiao waved dismissively without looking back. "Just beware—wild animals might come sniffing for blood!"
"Crap…"
At the mention of "wild animals," Gu Lang realized the implications. What if this was someone else’s prey? Imagine being caught mid-burial—it wouldn’t end well.
"Hey? Wait for me!"
Hurrying to catch up, Gu Lang took a step too quickly and inadvertently stepped on Little Four’s recent deposit, nearly slipping.
"Damn…"
With a mix of laughter and frustration, he wiped his shoe and hopped after her.
"Tsk… Such a shame."
Wang Ping lingered, casting a reluctant glance at the antelope. Whether mourning its untimely demise or lamenting the missed meal, he couldn’t decide.
"Boss, hurry up!" Gu Lang’s voice urged from ahead.
Shaking his head, Wang Ping gently patted the antelope’s body and jogged after the group.
Long after their figures faded into the distance, footsteps approached. A grayish-white Mongolian wolf arrived at the antelope’s side.
Sniffing the untouched corpse, it raised its head toward the direction Gu Lang had gone, confusion evident on its lupine face.
"What’s this supposed to mean? Not tasty enough?"
Behind it, the wolf pack assembled, standing respectfully behind their alpha—a leader who, despite a limp, had defeated all rivals.
"Hmm?"
At that moment, a familiar stench caught the alpha’s nose. Beside the antelope’s corpse lay something unmistakably squished.
"Arooo!!!"
The alpha howled angrily at the pack.
"Damn it, who did this? Didn’t I say gifts must remain tidy?!"
