Chapter 167: The True Power of The Door to the Other Side
"I saw it with my own eyes."
Through the telescope in his hand, the middle-aged man had witnessed Leon and the princess plummeting from the sky. He sighed deeply, his expression a mix of relief and something more complex as he explained:
"The anomalous object I possess is called The Door to the Other Side. Not only can it open behind any door in the capital, allowing you all to enter our base at will, but it can also unlock portals to the future."
"What?!"
It seemed this was the first time the bald woman had heard him explain his ability. She stared at him in shock, her voice trembling with awe.
"The future? You mean… that future?"
"Yes, the very one you’re thinking of. And here’s the thing—it’s not set in stone. Every action I take after learning about the future has the potential to change its course. For example, that slingshot shot you just made? That was the ‘answer’ I found in the future."
He glanced toward Lion Estate, his gaze heavy with complexity. "That man from the Cleansing Bureau… he’s cautious to an infuriating degree. His methods are flawless. At the slightest hint of danger, he activates that troublesome ability of his to shield himself and the princess, leaving no room for error whatsoever."
"Do you know how many times we tried last night?" he continued, his tone weary. "Eighty-three attempts, switching tactics over a dozen times—ambushes, poisonings, explosions—and every single time, he slipped through our fingers. Not once did we manage to kill him."
"The closest we came was twice. The first time, we threw everything we had at him, pushing him into a corner regardless of cost. But that triggered some cursed strand of hair he carried—one touch, and everyone except me, Phoebe, and her sister dropped dead instantly. He walked away with nothing more than a scratch."
"The second time, we sent Phoebe, who was suffering from amnesia, to get close to him. Her touch erased his existence from everyone’s memory. But then he simply held her hand, and the memories began to return, bit by bit. In the end, we were still powerless against him."
Recalling these battles of wits and strategy, the middle-aged man turned to the bald woman, whose jaw had dropped in disbelief. With a resigned sigh, he said:
"This man’s abilities are disgustingly powerful, almost without weakness… I can’t imagine what kind of life he’s lived to be so paranoid, as if someone’s always plotting against him."
"..."
Well… given that you spent an entire night trying to kill him eighty-three times, maybe his paranoia isn’t entirely misplaced. If he weren’t careful, he’d have been dead long ago.
"That guy from the Cleansing Bureau may be strong," the bald woman said, her tone tinged with excitement, "but you still managed to find a way to stop him. Doesn’t that make your power even stronger?"
"Not exactly."
The middle-aged man’s demeanor shifted. He wiped away an unexpected tear, his voice tinged with melancholy as he shook his head.
"Even if you can see the future countless times, it doesn’t guarantee you’ll be able to change it. Some problems are simply unsolvable."
"Uh… Boss, I don’t follow…"
"In simple terms," he clarified, glancing at the baffled bald woman, "there are things you might foresee happening, but no matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to prevent them. Take, for instance, the fate of this kingdom."
After a brief hesitation, he chuckled faintly, his smile carrying a trace of resignation.
"Do you remember our failed assassination attempt on the princess? Well, it wasn’t actually a failure—at least, not initially."
"What?!?"
"It’s true. When I stepped through The Door to the Other Side and arrived in the future, Luke had already succeeded in controlling the princess’s attendant and killing her. But soon after, my future self sent back a message."
His voice grew quieter. "Even in a world without the princess, the kingdom wasn’t saved. It merely went from total collapse to a slow, miserable decline."
"I hesitated. Out of pity, I altered the plan slightly when I returned from the future. I instructed Luke to position the guard elsewhere, deliberately abandoning the chance to succeed."
"What the hell… What the actual hell…"
The bald woman, stunned speechless, finally snapped out of her daze and lunged at the middle-aged man, grabbing his shoulders with veins bulging on her forehead.
"Why?! Why did you do it?! She’s the princess, and you’re a rebel! How could you tell me you felt sorry for her? What nonsense is this?!"
"I couldn’t help it," he murmured, wiping his eyes again. This time, the motion smudged the concealer on his cheek, revealing a scattering of irregular freckles that looked like dirt stains.
"She’s my sister."
"WHAT?!?!?"
"If it weren’t for her, I would’ve died in the capital during the second year of the war. If the kingdom’s fate remains tragic whether she lives or dies, how could I bring myself to kill her?"
"???????"
So… the leader of the rebels is actually the prince of the kingdom? What… what have I been doing all this time?
Staring at the unmistakable pattern of freckles on the middle-aged man’s weathered face, the bald woman felt her blood rush to her head, nearly driving her mad. She stammered:
"You’re… Joshua? That idiot prince? Impossible. You? You?!"
"I told you before," the man said softly, gazing toward Lion Estate. "My ability is called The Door to the Other Side."
"A power capable of observing the future at will demands an unparalleled price. And the price I paid matches the name of this ability."
"For thirty years, I mourned the destruction of the kingdom. Then I chose to step through the door to the other side, renouncing everything I ever had—family, past, and even my future."
"Now, I’m nothing more than a ghost wandering between worlds. Even if I gain the chance to save the kingdom and rewrite every regret, none of those changes will have anything to do with me anymore. That’s the cost of using The Door to the Other Side."
"..."
After explaining the truth of his power, the middle-aged man wiped away his tears and bowed slightly to the bald woman, whose expression was now a mask of horror.
"I’m sorry. I intended to take this secret to my grave. But in a few minutes, my sister—the princess—will vanish from everyone’s memories, including mine. I couldn’t resist sharing this while my memories were still intact."
"You… I… Damn it, why did you pick me? Why didn’t you—Mmph? Mmph!"
"Because out of everyone here, you’re the only one I can beat in a fight. Sorry about that."
Pinching the bald woman’s mouth open, he forced a handful of strange powder inside. "Don’t worry, it’s not poison. It’s ground-up nail clippings from Phoebe. Based on the dosage, it should only erase your memory for about an hour."
"Just sleep for a little while… And thank you for listening to my secret. Telling it all has made me feel much better."
"..."
Trapped in his grip, unable to break free or speak, the bald woman could only glare daggers at the apologetic man before her.
You feel better now, huh? Well, I sure as hell don’t! Let go of me, you bastard! Fuck!
