Chapter 166: Can the Holy Scriptures Stop a Cheater?

It seemed I was right.

Leon watched the flickering flame of a figure darting away several hundred meters ahead, his eyebrows arching slightly. Without hesitation, he swung his leg over the Witch’s Broom as it hovered into position, ready to pursue and bring the fleeing man to justice.

But just as the broom prepared to launch, the memory of nearly being ambushed by a hidden assailant flashed through his mind. Leon hesitated for a moment, then turned back to the princess lying unconscious at his feet. He retrieved the Plague-Infected Bandage from his bag and wrapped it around her, intending to revive her before continuing the chase.

According to the scruffy old man's "testimony," there were only two rebels with anomalous abilities in the Lion Estate. But if they could deceive his soul-detection skills, who’s to say they hadn’t lied during their interrogation? And if a third rebel lurked nearby, it wouldn’t take an anomaly to end the princess’s life—just a small nail gun would do the trick. Better to keep her close.

---

Moments later, under the restorative effects of the Plague-Infected Bandage, the princess groggily opened her eyes, her gaze unfocused as she stared up at Leon.

“What… what happened”

“Your Highness,” Leon said calmly, “the rebels attempted to assassinate you. I stopped them, but now I’m going after the culprit.”

After a brief explanation, Leon helped the still-dazed princess onto the broomstick, instructing her to hold tight around his waist. With a gentle tap of his heel against the Witch’s Broom, the magical vehicle shot forward like an arrow loosed from its bowstring in the scream of the princess, carrying them out of the hall and toward the fleeing short man.

“N-no! Don’t come any closer!”

The short man’s legs buckled beneath him as panic overwhelmed him. The sight of that soul-piercing devil flying straight toward him shattered whatever resolve he had left.

Pop.

A sound akin to a soap bubble bursting echoed faintly, and suddenly the haze clouding his mind lifted. His fear melted away, replaced by clarity.

So that’s how it is. I’m not really a coward—they implanted false memories to make me believe I was one. They wanted me to run in terror, luring the target into their trap.

Damn it… using me as bait again.

Even though he remembered agreeing to this plan initially, the realization stung. If not for the relentless pressure of that demon’s interrogation nearly breaking his spirit, Lucy might never have lifted the veil on his fabricated memories until the mission concluded.

Lucy’s memory manipulation was horrifying—every time he came back to himself, the weight of what she’d done settled heavily on his shoulders. But it worked flawlessly. After all, even the bait didn’t know about the ambush; how could the pursuer possibly anticipate it?

Shaking violently, the newly aware "coward" managed to regain his footing after stumbling a few steps. He resumed his frantic escape toward the edge of the estate.

Meanwhile, Leon, cautious as ever, kept his Soul Vision active and immediately detected the subtle ripple in the man’s soul.

Could this be a trap?

Frowning slightly, Leon slowed his pursuit.

The Gospel of Emma, Article Seven: Never underestimate your opponent’s intelligence. It’s not just agents who can set traps—it’s also intelligent anomalies, rogue Contaminated Individuals, and underground cults worshipping dark gods. These cunning adversaries often dangle bait to lure careless agents into their grasp, clearing potential threats before executing their plans.

Better safe than sorry.

Recalling Emma’s teachings, Leon narrowed his eyes as the short man neared the estate’s boundary. Instead of accelerating, he pulled the broom upward, ascending into the sky. Then, with a light tap, he activated the small mirror strapped to his belt.

Wherever you’re trying to lead me, you’ll need me to physically arrive for your ambush to work.

---

Sssss…

A chill ran down the short man’s spine, as though some lethal force had locked onto him. Trembling, he glanced back cautiously while continuing his desperate flight.

What the hell?!

Hundreds of meters away, Leon floated calmly in the air, assembling a sniper rifle piece by piece. The short man felt his stomach drop.

Based on the intel their leader had somehow obtained, the target’s abilities were formidable but limited to close range—supposedly no more than a few dozen meters. That should’ve guaranteed his safety.

But damn it… he brought a sniper rifle?! This isn’t fair—I’m dead meat!

Abandoning thoughts of reaching the designated ambush point, the short man scrambled toward the nearest building. After brutally knocking out its occupants, he crouched behind a steel shelving unit stacked with supplies.

Hiss.

With a sound like escaping air, the sack of rice exploded. The shelves, walls, bricks, tiles—all obstacles between him and Leon—were pierced simultaneously by a single glowing nail.

“Ahh…”

The short man felt a sharp coldness lance through his thigh. Before he could react, the force of the impact sent him sprawling backward. The acrid smell of scorched flesh filled his nostrays.

No… I don’t want to die!

Relying on the heightened intuition granted by his anomalous powers, he sensed another shot incoming—and knew it would be fatal. Overcome with terror, he clawed his way toward the window, determined to beg for mercy from the demonic figure in the sky.

But when he reached the sill and opened his mouth to surrender, the man riding the strange broom twitched violently, then plummeted from the sky like a broken kite.

---

Six streets away, atop a small bell tower:

“I got him!”

Adjusting the scarf that had slipped off her gleaming bald head, the woman wearing peculiar goggles lowered her slingshot and turned to the middle-aged man beside her with curiosity.

“Boss, how did you know he’d fly?”
