Chapter 181: I Need Some Air!
The moment the car roared to life, a certain honey badger had only managed to loop his seatbelt around himself twice. He was still fumbling with the buckle, trying to jam it into the slot on the left, when he watched in horror as the slot seemed to drift farther and farther away.
If there had been a wide-angle lens trained on the Jeep Wrangler for a slow-motion close-up, viewers would have seen the honey badger’s jaw slack, his four tiny paws flailing desperately forward. The seatbelt spiraled loosely around him like a silken scarf, growing looser by the second. Glass shards from the rear window sprayed through the air, catching the light as they rained down. His small pink tongue lolled out of his mouth, trembling with each bump and jolt, while his furry body slid inexorably toward the passenger-side window.
Across from the beleaguered honey badger, Gu Lang clutched the steering wheel, eyes wide as saucers. Behind him, squeezed between the seats, Yuan Xiaoxiao lay sprawled, one arm stretched upward, pointing ahead and shouting something unintelligible.
“BAM! CRASH!”
The Wrangler crested the hilltop and landed hard about ten meters below, its suspension groaning under the impact before rebounding violently. Wang Ping, caught in the inertia of the fall, slammed against the passenger-side glass. Just as he reached out to grab wolf cub Little Four—who had also been tossed sideways—the entire vehicle lurched again. Wang Ping's world flipped upside-down as he collided with the roof, bounced off the seat, and finally rolled onto the floorboard in an ungainly heap.
“Phew…”
He’d barely scrambled back up when Little Four slid down the seat, landing squarely on top of his head and knocking him flat again.
“Aroooo!!”
Little Four panicked, all four paws scrabbling wildly. In its confusion, it kicked Wang Ping repeatedly in the face, sending both of them tumbling across the footwell in a chaotic tangle of fur and limbs.
Meanwhile, Gu Lang—blessedly secured by his own seatbelt—was the picture of relative composure. With the river looming dangerously close, he yanked the wheel hard, veering the Wrangler along the water's edge. A spray of droplets erupted as they narrowly avoided plunging into the stream, accelerating southward at breakneck speed.
From behind came a guttural roar—a sound of pure frustration—as the pursuing brown bear charged over the crest of the hill. Its massive paws thundered against the earth, kicking up clouds of dust as it barreled downhill after them.
Gu Lang pressed harder on the gas pedal, weaving the Wrangler along the riverbank. After nearly 500 meters, he swung westward around a rocky outcrop. Still, the bear pursued relentlessly, its determination unwavering. It was clear that this beast wasn’t going to give up until it had dismantled every last one of them.
"Oh, come on..."
Gu Lang muttered under his breath, his heart pounding so loudly it drowned out everything else. He couldn’t help but curse the stubbornness of their pursuer.
But no matter how fast a bear could run, it couldn’t match the speed of four wheels. As the distance between them widened, the passengers inside the car finally began to breathe easier. Someone even dared to massage their sore legs, which had cramped during the chaos.
From the backseat came the faint rustling of movement. Glancing into the rearview mirror, Gu Lang saw Yuan Xiaoxiao brushing shards of glass from her hair, her eyes rolling skyward in exasperation.
Beside her, a small furry paw emerged from beneath the seat. Wang Ping hauled Little Four onto the seat, then pulled himself up alongside it. He collapsed backward, lying flat on the cushion, staring blankly at the ceiling with a dazed expression.
Little Four, clearly nursing some bruises, crouched on the seat and whined pitifully at Wang Ping. When the honey badger ignored it, the cub turned its attention to Gu Lang, barking insistently. But the driver was too preoccupied to respond.
Two pale hands reached forward from the backseat, scooping up the agitated cub. Yuan Xiaoxiao, having finally cleared enough space to sit upright, cradled the wolf in her arms, murmuring soothing words to quiet its cries.
While keeping one eye on the road, Gu Lang glanced toward the honey badger. “Boss, quick—check if the tablet fell anywhere. Is it broken?”
Wang Ping shot him a venomous glare. “You’ve got the nerve to ask me that?”
Suppressing the urge to throttle the man, Wang Ping propped himself up and scanned the area. Spotting the tablet wedged in the narrow gap between the seat and the gearshift compartment, he extended his claws to retrieve it. Unfortunately, the space was too tight. Giving up, he leapt down to the floorboard and retrieved it from below.
Seeing that the live-stream feed was still active on the screen, Wang Ping didn’t bother checking for further damage. Instead, he slapped the device back onto the dashboard mount with a resounding smack.
“Incredible, Boss is so smart—he even remembered to fetch the streamer’s tablet!”
“Basic ops, don’t hype.”
“Rarely see Boss not lose his temper.”
“Wait till the bear stops chasing them. Then you’ll see how angry he gets.”
“Holy cow, has that bear been chasing them for a full kilometer already?”
Thanks to the backup camera mounted on the rearview mirror, the live-stream audience hadn’t missed a single moment of the mayhem—even as the main camera tumbled into the footwell. On-screen, the brown bear, though now far behind, was still visible in relentless pursuit.
A collective sigh rippled through the chat.
“Sigh… Gu Lang, you really are…”
A cascade of comments followed: “Agreed,” “+1.” Clearly, everyone shared the sentiment. Gu Lang’s knack for saying exactly the wrong thing at the worst possible moment was infamous—and often earned him a beating from a certain honey badger. Even now, the lump on the back of his head hadn’t fully healed, yet he persisted in courting disaster.
No one felt this more acutely than Wang Ping himself. Watching the barrage of messages scroll past, his gaze darted between the rearview mirror and the oblivious driver. He waited impatiently for the moment the bear gave up the chase, fantasizing about exacting revenge.
For now, however, Gu Lang remained blissfully unaware of the impending doom. His focus remained fixed on the receding form of the bear in the distance.
The Wrangler sped along the riverbank for nearly seven kilometers before the bear finally slowed to a stop, turning back toward the forest. Ahead, a narrow stone mountain less than a kilometer wide loomed across the river. The winding channel curved sharply before flowing southward once more.
Slowing the vehicle, Gu Lang frowned at the expanse of water stretching nearly 500 meters wide. Scanning the shoreline, he searched for a shallow crossing point. Then, without warning, a grin spread across his face.
Both Wang Ping and Yuan Xiaxia exchanged wary glances. Had the stress finally driven him mad?
Chuckling softly at first, then erupting into full-blown laughter, Gu Lang leaned back and grinned at his companions. “Tell me,” he said, barely able to contain his mirth, “do you think that bear is absolutely livid right now? All that meat, just slipping away... Haha! What an idiot!”
Yuan Xiaoxiao’s eyes widened in disbelief. Her mind raced with unspoken profanities. After all that tension, THIS was what he came up with? Where did this twisted sense of pride even come from?
After a prolonged silence, she forced a smile—one that looked more like a grimace—and replied weakly, “Haha… yeah.”
The honey badger buried his face in his paws, unable to witness any more of this spectacle.
He wasn’t alone in feeling that way.
“SLAM!”
Chen Bai stormed out of his office, slamming the door shut behind him with a thunderous bang. Startled coworkers glanced up from their desks. His assistant quickly stood, timidly asking, “Boss, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing!” Chen Bai pressed a hand to his chest, waving dismissively. “I just need some air!”
