Chapter 174: Something’s Off!
From inside the car, Wang Ping watched as Gu Lang reached the prone figure, flipped her over, and visibly recoiled in shock, plopping down onto the ground. Wang Ping froze for a moment before quickly opening the car door and rushing over.
Upon reaching them, Wang Ping caught sight of the woman's face and shuddered involuntarily.
It wasn’t that she was some grotesque corpse—Wang Ping had seen his share of bloated bodies. The shock came from her makeup, which had been smeared by the river water. Black eyeliner streaked down her cheeks, her complexion was deathly pale, and bluish veins stood out on her neck, giving her an uncanny zombie-like appearance.
Summoning his courage, Gu Lang placed his hand under her nose to check for breath. Instantly relieved, he exclaimed:
"She’s still breathing! We need to save her!"
With that, Gu Lang grabbed her arms and dragged her up the riverbank.
Wang Ping studied the woman, sensing something odd. Her legs suggested a slender frame, yet her upper body appeared disproportionately bulky. Her face, swollen and discolored from prolonged submersion, only added to the unease.
"Uh..."
Gu Lang felt the soaked fabric of her clothes and turned to Wang Ping with a conflicted expression. "Boss, should we change her into dry clothes?"
"Why are you asking me?" Wang Ping was speechless, turning back toward the car without hesitation.
Finding nothing suspicious—no weapons or signs of danger—and knowing he couldn’t assist medically, Wang Ping lost interest in lingering.
But just as he climbed back into the vehicle, Gu Lang hoisted the woman in his arms and approached the car.
"What’s going on? Are you really planning to change her clothes here?" Wang Ping stared, incredulous. Gu Lang, don’t mess around—we’re live-streaming!
Meanwhile, fans in the live chat who were baffled by the sudden stop wondered why their favorite streamer and honey badger had gotten out of the car. They soon saw Gu Lang carrying a woman to the passenger door.
"What’s happening?"
"Is he holding someone?"
"Did a hiker get stranded?"
"Is she alive?"
Standing outside the passenger door, Gu Lang supported the woman with one arm while opening the door with the other. Turning to Wang Ping, he said, "Boss, maybe you should move the little pup and the jerky to the backseat. There’s too much stuff there; she won’t fit."
"Alright..."
Without hesitation, Wang Ping scooped up Little Four and the dried beef, hopping out of the seat and heading to the rear.
After considerable effort, Gu Lang managed to settle the woman in the front passenger seat, reclining it slightly before returning to the driver’s seat.
He cranked up the AC and glanced at the live chat, explaining the situation. "We found this woman lying on the riverbank earlier. She might be a stranded hiker—her clothes are soaked—but she’s alive. I’ve put her in the car to warm her up with the AC. Now, we’ll head to the nearest hospital."
"Hospital?"
Wang Ping frowned from the backseat. "Gu Lang, are you dreaming? We’re deep in the wilderness now—the closest hospital is at least a full day’s drive away."
Informed viewers scrambled to remind him via the chat.
"So... what do we do?"
Gu Lang looked bewildered but then remembered something. Grabbing the tablet, he aimed the camera at the woman. "Are there any doctors in the chat? Quick, tell me how to help her! I have a first aid kit—what should I do? Oh, Lili, are you there? Aren’t you a doctor?"
The woman’s smeared makeup filled the screen, causing many squeamish viewers to scream and toss their phones aside. Panic erupted in the chatroom as shaky hands typed frantically.
"My mom asked why I suddenly started crying."
"Um... drink more hot water?"
"If my heart weren’t strong, I’d be in the same state as her right now."
"Quick, get her into dry clothes!"
"Turn the AC up higher!"
Ironically, it was the usually delicate female viewers who remained calm, offering pseudo-medical advice. Amidst the chaos, one bold message appeared in bold letters: "I’M A VET!!!"
Wang Ping sat in the backseat, paw over his face.
"Gu Lang, you’ve really stepped in it this time!"
Just then, the woman in the passenger seat shifted slightly, her breathing growing labored. Soon, violent coughing erupted in the car.
Having been submerged for so long and chilled to the bone, the sudden warmth from the AC triggered spasms in her throat and lungs.
Gu Lang glanced at the woman hacking uncontrollably, then at the tablet screen now smeared with snot and water droplets. He hastily grabbed Little Four’s blanket to wipe it clean.
"Mmm..."
At first, the coughing seemed involuntary, but halfway through, the woman woke up. Still coughing, she instinctively reached for her waistband.
Gu Lang, distracted by cleaning the tablet, missed the gesture. The live chat, blocked by the blanket covering the camera, could only hear sounds. But Wang Ping in the backseat narrowed his eyes.
That move isn’t friendly.
While waking up and checking your waistband might not mean much, her next actions were telling. Realizing her weapon was gone, she quickly withdrew her hand, stifling her coughs and feigning confusion as she sat up. In a soft voice, she asked, "Ah... what happened? Cough, cough... Where am I?"
"Eh... Something’s wrong!"
Wang Ping swallowed his mouthful of jerky, wiped his paw on Little Four’s head, and prepared to strike if necessary.
With prior experience rescuing stranded travelers, Wang Ping knew this behavior was off. Normally, someone coughing uncontrollably wouldn’t try to speak immediately after regaining consciousness—they’d focus on clearing their airways first.
This woman’s actions screamed deception. Far from being unaware of her situation, she seemed to be assessing her surroundings after realizing her weapon was missing. If Wang Ping himself had woken up weaponless with a stranger nearby, his first instinct would have been to kick them away.
Of course, her acting skills far surpassed Gu Lang’s. Oblivious, Gu Lang set the tablet aside and leaned forward earnestly. "You’re awake! How are you feeling? Do you feel any discomfort? I found you on the riverbank earlier—are you traveling? Are there others with you?"
Once again, Wang Ping face-pawed in the backseat. Gu Lang, you’re too trusting—even providing excuses for her.
"Mmm..." The woman rubbed her forehead, glancing at the rearview mirror and noticing the camera. After a brief pause, she forced out a few more coughs before gasping, "I remember now—I got caught in yesterday’s sandstorm and fell into the river. Thank you for saving me!"
"Oh, yesterday’s sandstorm was brutal!" Gu Lang nodded sympathetically, waving dismissively. "Don’t mention it. We’re all fellow travelers—helping each other is what we do!"
As they exchanged pleasantries in the front seat, neither noticed the honey badger’s suspicious expression in the back. Once the woman sat up, Wang Ping spotted two small holes on the back of her windbreaker.
"Those look like bullet holes... Why does she act like nothing’s wrong?" Wang Ping scratched his head, perplexed.
