Chapter 191: The Morning Star
"Not just a small trouble," Marion sighed bitterly. "If things go badly, my name might end up on both the Empire's wanted list and the Charles Federation’s blacklist. And those eleven comrades of mine? They’ll probably cut ties with me altogether."
"That serious?" Tang Fang felt a chill run down his spine, guilt creeping into his gaze. To repay his debt—or perhaps to curry favor—Marion had sacrificed far too much.
He sighed inwardly. His own strength was still insufficient. If only he had battlecruisers now, or even a Zerg swarm, or perhaps a golden Protoss fleet. Then they wouldn’t need to wander like fugitives; they could simply follow him, unafraid of any imperial fleet or the Charles Federation.
"You don't need to feel guilty." Marion seemed to have caught the apology in Tang Fang's eyes and smiled gently. "We all owe you our lives. It's not something we can ever repay. Killing Gabrilles and breaking free from the Federation's control—it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I just never had the resolve until now."
"I’m sure you’ve noticed by now—the Garcia Resistance is nothing more than disposable cannon fodder in the eyes of the Charles Federation. What did our comrades' blood and sacrifices bring us? Nothing. To them, we’re just tools—to slow down the Empire during wartime. And if peace talks ever happen, those hypocritical politicians will toss us aside as bargaining chips to secure their interests."
"For over twenty years, I’ve watched young people fight for dignity and freedom, fall one after another on the battlefield, perish under the stars. Their struggles, their sacrifices—they were all for naught but to serve the Federation’s agenda. I don’t want to see that anymore. Aligning ourselves with tigers won’t lead us anywhere."
Tang Fang remained silent for a while before nodding slowly. "I hope there comes a day when we meet again. Perhaps then, you won’t have to drift anymore..."
"I believe that day will come," Marion said earnestly, gazing at Tang Fang’s reflection in the windowpane.
"By the way," Tang Fang added, his gaze lingering on a few old ships docked nearby, "I’m curious. How did your fleet slip past the outer sentry posts of the Asram star system?"
Marion winked at him mischievously. "You’ll know tomorrow."
---
The next morning, at 8:15, after finishing a traditional breakfast prepared by the fleet’s chef, Tang Fang led Arroz and Housen to the spaceport command center. After exchanging pleasantries with General Nord, Marion arrived, and together they left the command center, boarding an electric tram bound for the military port area.
They disembarked in Zone A, where Nord guided them onto a gangway connected to a docking berth.
"There it is," Marion pointed through the window at a sleek 200-meter-long vessel. Narrow at the front and wider at the back, its tail shaped like a trident, with three small auxiliary thrusters mounted beneath its belly. "This is Morning Star, the latest Lightning Mamba-class destroyer from the Charles Federation. Dual 200mm rail cannons on each flank, deep-space torpedo launchers on the stern, and a cluster of rapid-fire 120mm guns arranged in a plum blossom pattern underneath."
"Electromagnetic field generators, quantum radar, central computer systems, fire-control radar arrays, retractable solar panels, an EZero engine capable of warp level 6.5, intelligent navigation modules, automated drone deployment facilities... "
"This... isn’t this too extravagant? I only needed a frigate," Tang Fang protested, surprised Marion would gift him such a state-of-the-art destroyer. For this mission, a small warp-capable escort ship—or even a shuttle—would have sufficed.
Nord chuckled. "Extravagant? If Virginia and I hadn’t intervened, the general would’ve given you a cruiser instead. But considering you're heading into the heart of the Empire, a cruiser would’ve been too conspicuous. After weighing the options, we decided on this Morning Star."
Outside, the ship shimmered silver under the spaceport’s floodlights, its twin streaks of star-like decals gleaming.
"Too conspicuous?" Tang Fang raised an eyebrow. "Flying a Charles Federation warship straight into Imperial territory doesn’t scream 'low profile.'"
Nord and Marion exchanged amused glances. Ignoring the comment, Marion gestured toward the airlock at the end of the corridor. "Come on, let’s take a look inside."
"Playing mysterious," Tang Fang muttered, waving for Arroz and Housen to follow as he trailed behind Nord.
With a hiss of airlocks closing behind them, they stepped aboard. Crew members greeted Marion with salutes, calling him "General." But when it came to Tang Fang, they switched to "Captain." This made him swell with pride—a vanity trip he’d never experienced outside virtual games.
"To the rear is the power chamber, forward-left is the observation deck, right side is crew quarters, there’s the armory, elevator shaft..." Nord continued guiding them through the ship’s layout.
Five minutes later, they ascended via elevator to the bridge. As the door slid open, a female officer spotted Tang Fang behind Marion and announced loudly, "Captain on deck!"
At her words, everyone stood and turned. Tang Fang froze upon recognizing several faces: Grant, Walton, Joey, Nehemiah—and Churchill, the burly, chest-furred soldier from Droznyr’s forces stationed near the defensive console.
Grant approached with a grin. "How am I here? You think three people can operate a destroyer like this? Remember, I’ve got my ‘license.’"
Tang Fang glanced at Marion, who nodded approvingly. Warmth filled his chest. "Old man, thank you," he murmured.
Grant was right. While Tang Fang’s system contained plenty of marines and even nurse NPCs, the controls of StarCraft’s Terran ships differed vastly from those of the Charles Federation vessels. Teaching them to pilot Morning Star would take months, if not years. By sending Grant and the others, Marion clearly intended for them to stay by Tang Fang’s side.
Faced with a choice between strangers and familiar faces, most people would pick the latter. With Grant and the rest supporting him, Tang Fang’s authority aboard the ship would solidify, and the crew’s cohesion would strengthen.
"They volunteered to follow you," Marion stroked his beard, smiling. "I merely followed the will of the masses."
After exchanging greetings with Nehemiah, Walton, and others, Nord stepped forward. "Worried about the ship being too flashy? Come, let me show you something special."
